Maorivation

Project Overview Maorivation – Motivation for our Maori Nation!
A daily radio programme, aired from 10am – 12noon on Moana 98.2 FM & 1440 AM.
A Quick history on Moana Radio –
Moana Radio broadcasts from Tauranga on two frequencies, 98.2FM and 1440AM. This
allows us to reach an audience from Katikati to Opotiki on 1440AM, and from Katikati to
Pukehina on 98.2FM. We also have an international audience via online streaming at
www.moanaradio.co.nz. This allows our expatriate Tauranga whanau to stay in touch with
their community, wherever they are in world.
Moana proudly serves the Tauranga Rohe, providing diverse programming and an extensive
community presence.
Moana is here to present, promote and preserve Te Reo & Te Ao Maori, and push the
kaupapa that reflects the foundations of our Iwi and Hapu. Tauranga Moana, Tauranga
Tangata is more than a positioning statement to us – it is our Station’s Identity. Under the governance of the 3 Iwi in Tauranga - Ngati Ranginui, Ngai Te Rangi & Ngati
Pukenga, Moana 98.2 FM & 1440 AM is loud, proud and local. Our biggest point of
difference, though, is that we are; by, for and about Tauranga Moana!
What is Maorivation?
What started as an avenue to provide up-beat music to those using their brunch break to
exercise has grown into a positive, motivational daily programme – full of healthy tips, advice
and ways to incorporate healthy gains into each weekday morning.
Highlighting key areas of concern for our (Maori) people and delivering expert advice and
suggestions through an avenue of options, as appose to ultimatums.
Through a partnership with local health promoters and providers, Maorivation will ensure our
audience is equipped with the right advice and pathway to take the first steps toward a
healthier, happier life.
Segments will be spread throughout the show, each day belonging to a ‘seasonal theme’ –
so as to keep content and contributions consistent and fresh. Themes could include
infotainment type vignettes designed to entertain, whilst informing and educating the
audience. This would be a great vehicle to deliver messages about more serious kaupapa –
like Breast Cancer Awareness for example.
We will also look to promote other areas of importance by incorporating well known local
personalities, to assist with enhancing the programme – but also add an element of
authenticity to content.

What elements will make up Maorivation on air?
The biggest drawcard – will always be the music! Maorivation will feature, alongside the best
expert and Whanau advice, suggestions and information, an exclusive 30min workout mix
featuring fast, positive motivating music relevant to the listener! This will feature on air, and
also be available for free to download via our website.
All other music outside this, will be similar but obviously in a normal radio format.
Local success stories - everything from locals telling their story of how they quit smoking,
lost weight, overcame injuries and illnesses – all positive kaupapa will be featured!
Local challenges - locals sharing their own challenges they've set up for themselves and/or
a group of peers, a recent example: 100 burpees a day challenge for 100 days. No sugar for
two weeks. Mums up Mauao everyday for a whole month, you get the idea!
Hints & Tips – these are very short hints n tips about everything from "eat muesli for
breakfast, it'll keep you full till lunchtime" - "Meal Prep your kai, it'll stop you from wasting
money on junk food for lunch" - "Have an early dinner - if you eat 3 to 4 hours before bed
time, you'll wake up hungry and that'll ensure you don't skip breakfast" - "30mins of exercise
a day will add years to your life" – we will use language our people will understand, and
respond too – not industry jargon!
Myth Busters - this is basically self explanatory, busting the myths that our people get
wrong everyday!! For example - "Doing 1000 sit ups a day will not get you abs" - "Cutting out
Carbs from your diet will not help in long term weight loss" - "Ladies - lifting weights will not
make you bulky"
Know your landmarks - information on the landmarks that are on our back door step! How
many steps up Mauao, how many calories burnt when you swim Pilot Bay, how many km’s
along the Waikareao Walkway, how long does it take to run the Papamoa Hills –
encouraging our people to think about their Whenua when considering an active, affordable
workout!
Recipes/Kai - How to feed your family on a budget that is still healthy and nutritious!
Quick kai on the run (meals in under 10mins), the healthy versions of our favourites, for
example - Boil Up, Burgers, Fried Chips!
Nutritional Information on our favourite places to eat! Creating a guide full of favourite
local means and eat out options, with the relevant nutritional information and the amount of
exercise needed to shed the bad fats gained!
What's in your lunch box - Ask parents what they pack for their kids to take to school, and
also what they pack to take to work. Ask the kids what they like and don't like in their lunch
box and also give some ideas on how to keep both the kids happy & healthy with what they
take to work/school.

Excuse of the day - we will highlight an "Excuse of the day" which is basically the poor
excuses people have for not eating right, exercising regularly, takeaways instead of home
cooked meals etc and we counteract that excuse with a resolution and/or action. We will
then discuss easy ways to get active!
The Team behind Maorivation –
Takiri Butler – Executive Producer & Project Manager
Maorivation is the brainchild of Moana Radio Breakfast host Takiri Butler – who has been
looking for a way to utilize broadcasting to encourage healthier options and lifestyles for local
Maori Whanau – many of whom listen to her local breakfast show daily! The majority of the
shows kaupapa derives from exsisting features promoted on Breakfast daily, and through
her networks – Takiri has grown the kaupapa from features on Breakfast, to a standalone
daily programme, focused on good gains, and Whanau progression.
A celebrated athlete, Takiri’s background includes playing various codes at social, club,
regional and national representative levels. Whether it’s Netball, Touch, Sevens, and Rugby

How can we work together?
Establishing a relationship with your team, and organisation will assist us in ensuring that we
can provide Whanau with information regarding their health and wellbeing, via an avenue
they are more receptive too, first.
We can offer you a various range of different branding opportunities through sponsorship of
the entire show, various segments – on air, on line and throughout the community options.
The goal is to combine the reach of our station, with the tangible audience share Moana
Mornings has – and incorporate the important kaupapa you actively promote throughout the
community.
