News from the Division President, Gabby Vasek
Greetings to Members of the Texas Division CofC!
Summer is here and I
hope you are enjoying
this wonderful time of the
year as much as I am. It is
good to take a break from
school and homework
and to focus on other
priorities and have time
to relax and have fun.
My priorities this
summer will include
working for the CofC.
Thank you so much for
electing me to serve as
president of the Texas
Division CofC for 20132014. It is an honor to
lead such a dedicated
group and I promise to do my very best. Please let me
know what I can do to help our organization grow and
be more involved in civic affairs. I know you have some
great ideas and I want to hear them all. I look forward
to serving with Zander Shepeard, Vice President; Jaclyn
Beck, Second Vice President; Jacob Leenhouts, Third
Vice President; Korbin Cox, Secretary; Mellie Smith,
Treasurer; Asha Smith, Historian; Katlynn Loggins,
Chaplain and Connell Gutierrez, Custodian.
Here is an update on our plans for the coming year.
1) President’s Project 2013-2014 will be to erect a
Sesquicentennial Marker in Texas to honor our
brave Confederate ancestors. The location has not
been decided at this time, but I will let you know as
soon as that decision is made. I want to thank Ms.
Claudia and Ms. Eva for their help, support and
direction in this project.

2) President’s Challenge: “The South Supports
American Heroes”
I’ve chosen this Division Challenge for 2013-2014
because at this time there are so many heroes
serving around the world for the cause of freedom.
My challenge to each chapter is to remember our
military at each of your meetings and include a
prayer for their safety and success. Please send a
goody box and thank you note to at least one active
military serving away from home and remember
our veterans with Christmas cards, letters and
Valentines this year. Let’s also honor our
Confederate soldiers individually or by unit in the
Texas Confederate with small articles telling about
their lives and military accomplishments. Please
submit to me the names of members whose
ancestor(s) served the CSA from Texas. We will
compile a “Texas Honor Roll” that lists Texas
Division members with their Texas ancestor(s).
Remember to let me know your accomplishments
in this challenge so you can be recognized for your
acts of patriotism.
3) 2013-2014 Theme: “Doubly Blessed – Southern and
Texan”
I am so proud and thankful to be Southern and
Texan and I know you are too. Let’s remember
each day of this CofC year to be grateful for our
heritage and accept the responsibility to preserve it
and
carry it into the future.
I look forward to working with each of you, our
Executive Board, and our Director, Mrs. Claudia Pugh.
Thanks for your support,
Gabby
Division Director’s Message
Hello, Everyone! I hope you all are enjoying time out of school and hopefully,
some special activities.
The Children of the Confederacy General Convention starts next week. I am
excited because I have never been to a CofC General Convention. And,
Mississippi is a fun place. Texas Division will have eight members in attendance
and seven adults as well. We hope to bring home some awards, too.
As you and your family are out and about this summer, try to include a stop at a
Confederate marker, monument or historical site. Be sure to record it with a
photo and send a copy to our Historian Asha Smith. Contact information for all
the officers is in this newsletter.
If you are stuck at home, think about adding a supplemental to your membership record. A supplemental is
an ancestor (other than the one you used when you joined) who served the Confederacy. It can be another
grandparent or an uncle. It also could be an aunt or grandmother! Your mom or grandmother or Chapter
Director can help you. If it is an ancestor that a UDC member has filed on, it should be fairly easy.
I would like to visit as many Chapters as possible, so please send me an invitation! It doesn’t have to be a
special event, I just want to spend some time with you.
Miss Claudia
Division Registrar’s Message
May 31, 2013 was the last day for CofC applications to be
counted on the Per Capita Roster for 2012-2013.
A brand new year has begun, and we hope to increase the
Texas Division membership this year. Because we have
members age out or drop out, we must keep working to
enroll new members.
Directors, please look around your neighborhoods for
children that may have Confederate ancestry, and invite
them to join your fun activities, then help them with their
research if necessary. We can not afford to just depend
on enrolling the children and grandchildren of our UDC
members. If your Chapter plans exciting and interesting
activities, and prospective members attend, it could also
help increase your UDC membership.

Gabby Vasek, President
Zander Shepeard, Vice President
Thank you for electing me Vice President of the Texas Division. I have
been very busy this summer with football camp every day and band camp
at Stephen F. Austin for a week. I have had numerous orders which I have
processed and sent to General. The popular pin at this time is the C of C
Sesquicentennial Pin which is $25.00 plus $3.50 shipping, forms are on
the C of C web site. This pin can be worn by C of C and UDC members.
Remember we have Texas Division C of C Pins and Page Pins in Division
and can be ordered from me. My goal is to increase insignia and pin orders
and also instruct the membership on the proper order of insignia on their
ribbon. Hope to see all of you at the Executive Board meeting. If you have
any questions or need forms for the Texas Division Pins or Page Pin contact
me at [email protected].
In C of C friendship,
Zander
Jaclyn Beck, 2nd Vice President
Hello- I am Jaclyn Beck, your 2nd Vice President for the 2013-2014 year. Thank you so
much for electing me again this year to your board of officers. I look forward to the
CofC year.
I will be an 8th grader this year at Ted Polk Middle School in Carrollton, TX. I will be busy
being a cheerleader and was elected President of the National Junior Honor Society for
the year. I am also our Dallas 2 CofC Chapter President.
I am very involved with my church youth group at First Baptist Church Richardson and
spent a week this summer at a church youth camp in Missouri and a week on a church
choir tour in Tennessee where we participated in worship at FBC Tuscaloosa, and led
art camps, did work projects, and sang concerts at Bayside Baptist Church in
Chattanooga, TN. We also sang at the Knox County Jail and went Ocoee River Rafting. I
love to travel and was able to spend a week at Disney World in Orlando with my Mom
and sister and a week and a half in Athens, GA when we took my sister back for her
sophomore year at University of Georgia (where I also hope to go!) and got her all
moved in to her Delta Gamma sorority house. I can’t wait to attend another University
of Georgia football game in Athens in September (GO DAWGS!!)
Have a Great Year!
Jaclyn
Jacob Leenhouts, 3rd Vice President
Thank you for electing me as one of your Division Officers. I have served as an officer
at the chapter level for Dallas 2 for several years, as well as earning my Page Pin at
both the division and general levels. My first paging experience was for a CofC
General Convention at the age of four. This year, I will be a 7th grader at Sanger
Middle School. I play trombone in the Sanger Indian band as well as running track
and trying out for the basketball team. Fishing is the one thing that I’ll do anytime I
get a chance. My biggest catch so far, was a 10lb Stripper Bass from Lake Texhoma.
It’s not a fish tale; I have the picture to prove it. I am also a Second Class Scout with
BSA Troop 771. I got to go Whitewater rafting at BSA Camp San Isabel in Colorado
this summer.
Korbin Cox, Recording Secretary
Thank you for electing me Secretary! I served as Treasurer last year and really
enjoyed the experience. As an upcoming 8th grader, I am looking forward to
improving my short hand writing and listening skills. I attend Karnes City Junior
High, Home of the Fightin’ Badgers. I play basketball on my junior high team. I
love the great outdoors, especially fishing on our new boat. Saltwater is the best!
I managed to catch the first shark in our new boat a four foot bonnethead. I can’t
wait to see what new adventures lie awaiting for me. Long Live the
Confederacy!!!!
Mellie Smith, Treasurer
Hello! My name is Mellie Smith. I love being Treasurer! Here is a
little about me: I was born April 17, 2002 in Arlington, Texas. I
will be in 7th grade when school starts at Donna Shepard
Intermediate School. I have 1 sister and 3 brothers. My favorite
color is yellow. I love drawing and playing video games
sometimes. I would love to be an artist or take care of children in
the future.
Asha Smith, Historian
My name is Asha Smith. Thank you for electing me for office in the
Texas Division CofC .
I’m 16, live in Mansfield, and am about to be a junior at Legacy High
School. I have 3 brothers, 1 sister, 8 cousins…. Well let’s just say I have
a big family. My one sister, Mellie, is actually the Treasurer of the
Texas Division CofC.
You might want to start sending me your pictures for the state
scrapbook at [email protected]. Thanks!

To the Chapter Directors
Watch for a makeover of the Children of the Confederacy website. Of particular interest will be the
ability to access the End of Year forms and to complete them online as PDF documents.
I have included the new General Officers elsewhere in the letter. I have listed their Division if I knew it,
but I do not have addresses at this time. They should be up on the website shortly and I will pass them
along as soon as I have them.
The Children of the Confederacy Handbook has been revised. It is available through Richmond and the
cost is $8. I hope that you will order one and review it.
RE: insignia—in addition to changing the CofC 2nd VP at the Convention, there also was a change in the
advisor to this officer. Insignia and other supplies ordered through the VP or 2 nd VP will be delayed
until the transition of records and supplies is complete. In fact, in the new handbook, it states that no
orders for insignia or supplies should be mailed between July 15 and August 15 to allow for this
transition. If you have something in the works, please be patient as this will just have to run its course.
However if you have not received your order or at least some acknowledgement of it (ie, your cancelled
check shows up in your statement), by October 1, please let me know and I will follow up on it. The
Division VP, Zander Shepeard, has some supplies and he will process orders for what he has on hand
soon after receiving your order.
Texas will co-host the 60th General Convention in Texarkana next July. Stay tuned for more info on that
and please, plan to go. It won’t get any closer for a long time. But, just to tease you a bit, the 2015
General Convention will be at Appomattox, Virginia!!

I am very excited about my officer’s project. I am collecting Hallmark Recordable Books and/or
money to buy them. Then, I will take them to my local recruiting office for them to give out to new
recruits with young families. That way they have something to give their family when they go to
boot camp.

I will be hand carving wooden name plates for the officers at th head table.
Mellie Smith,
My officer project is to raise money for “Caring for Russian Orphans” through Allies in Youth Development.

The Newton Dreadnaughts had their chartering ceremony in February. Texas Division UDC President
Betty Petruska presented the charter to Chapter President Lauren Beck. Miss Claudia installed the officers
by using a puzzle to show the officers that each one of them has to do their duty to make the chapter.

In April the Newton Dreadnaughts attended the
Texas Division CofC Convention. Two members and
two prospective members attended. At first we
thought the weather and pool were too cool for the
pool party on Friday night, but a quick dip in the hot
tub warmed everyone up for a swim. Saturday
morning was the Memorial Service and Chapter
President Lauren Beck participated in the service. At
the Business Meeting, Lauren read the chapter
report and the chapter received four awards. At
President's Evening, Lauren and her cousin, Rista
Richardson, presented the First National Flag.
Everyone had a good time learning about the CofC
and the Confederacy and making new friends.
Member Naomi Haley summed it up best when she
said it was the bestest day of her whole life. Naomi
who is in kindergarten has now learned to sing
Dixie's Land and was very happy when her teacher
sang it with her.

Dallas 2
Dallas, Texas
Dallas 2 has had a busy year already! We started off with Jaclyn Beck, Jacob Leenhouts and Caroline Leenhouts
traveling to Houston for the 2013 Texas Division Convention. While there, Caroline donned her whites and paged her
little heart out. Jaclyn was elected Division 2nd Vice President and Jacob was elected 3rd Vice President. In July, it was a
rode trip to Jackson, Mississippi for Jacob and Caroline. They were sad not to have Jaclyn with them, but really enjoyed
getting to know other Texas Division kids as well as making a whole bunch of new friends from all over The South. Once
again, Caroline put on her whites and worked hard. Jacob was elected to the nominating committee for next years
slate of officers. Now it’s on to Waco for the Executive Board Meeting. Time to plan, plan, plan!

Following the 59th CofC General Convention, the Magnolia Rangers traveled south to take a tour of Natchez, MS,
ending the day in Woodville, MS, childhood home of our President, Jeff Davis. Unfortunately, his home was closed on
Monday, when planned to tour and sadly, this much anticipated site was missed. Time in Woodville was spent
staying at the home of Connell Gutierrez’s grandmother, Gwen Dunn (UDC, Wilkinson County, MS). There, Danielle
with the help of her brother, Korbin and Connell started her first project with cleaning, placing flags, and
straightening the head stone of an abandoned Confederate grave in the Stuart Cemetery. On Tuesday, July 23 rd, they
headed back to Texas stopping at the Port Hudson, LA Battlefield.
Now, with many projects ahead, they can’t wait to get started.

Seven of our members attended the 75th Texas C of C Convention at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Houston, Texas on
April 12th -14th. The convention was presided over by our member and Texas Division President, Taylor Shepeard.
Friday started with a swim, pizza and games. Saturday morning the memorial service was held and Taylor and
Zander Shepeard and Ellie Beal participated. The business meeting followed. Zander acted as personal page to the
President and Ellie was a convention page. On Saturday evening was had our President’s Evening along with a
Southern dancing to end the evening. We had two members “age out” of C of C, they were Taylor Shepeard, a
charter member and Jeremy Bronikowski who joined soon after. We will certainly miss these two members. We
received several awards both as a chapter and individually of which we are very proud. We had such a great time we
did not want to leave. At our last meeting we brought snacks and personal items for a soldier in Afghanistan and
his box of goodies was mailed in early May. On May 4th. we helped the Magnolia Rangers UDC chapter with two CSA
marker dedications. One was at White Oak Cemetery in Porter, Texas and the other at Splendora City Cemetery.
Benny Goodwin participated in the honor guard, canteen ceremony and acted as the bell ringer. On May 20 th, three
of our members helped the Magnolia Rangers at their Awards Reception. Zachary Shepeard led the pledges and
Zander Shepeard sang, “I’m Proud to be an American” between the awarding of a WW II Cross of Military Service
and a National Defense Medal. Benny Goodwin and Zander acted at escorts for the veterans. We will have our next
meeting in late June. It has been a good year and we feel like we have fulfilled the objectives of C of C.

2013 Jaxburg CofC General Convention
Jackson, Mississippi
The Mississippi General Convention was a wonderful experience! We enjoyed history, music, recognition, and
friends old and new.
Thursday afternoon the 1st Business Session was held in the historic Old Capitol Building in Jackson. The ceiling of the
rotunda was beautifully painted and we climbed a sweeping staircase to the chambers for the first meeting. Texas
Division and its members received quite a number of awards during this session!
Friday’s Memorial Service was held at the historic St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in downtown. Following the service, it
was back to the hotel to change into our traveling clothes and board the buses for Vicksburg! There is so much history in
Vicksburg. Iit was hard to take it all in even though we were there for eight hours! We came home exhausted and
headed to bed for the big day to follow.
Saturday’s business session was held at the hotel and included the election of new General Officers as well as the
new Nominating Committee. The list of new officers is elsewhere in this newsletter and they include Texas’ own Danielle
Cox, Custodian General!! Way to go Danielle!! Also, Jacob Leenhouts, of Dallas 2 Chapter, Texas Division, was elected to
the Nominating Committee. There were new experiences including caucusing and election watchers. And, again, Texas
Division and its members received a number of awards.
President’s Evening was a gala event starting with dinner and ending with the Grand March. In between, the
Presidents’ read their Division reports and awards were given as well as scholarships announced. Curtis Kizer-Pugh,
Nicola Marschall 757, escorted Gabby Vasek, our incoming Texas Division President, as the Division flags were presented
and the Presidents seated at the front of the room. Gabby read the report for Texas Division outgoing President Taylor
Shepeard. Later, during the Grand March, Korbin Cox and Jacob Leenhouts also served as escorts for General Officers.
The invitation was issued for the 60th General Convention next year in Texarkana, Arkansas….or was it Texarkana, Texas
??? There seemed to be quite a discussion going on at the front of the room by the two Divisions as to which was the
better state! It will be at the new Holiday Inn. Texas will co-host the convention so mark your calendar now for July 17,
18, and 19, 2014, and plan to be there!!
