The 5th grade students in Mrs. Bargo’s
class were given the opportunity to
participate in a Fired Up About
Reading Program run by Firefighter
Matt Farrey of the Iowa City Fire
Department. Students were
challenged to read as much as they
could over an 8-week time period.
They had to record the time spent
reading as well as write about they
read.
At the end of eight weeks, the student who
had read the most minutes got the
opportunity to be “Firefighter for a Day.”
Oumou Diallo was picked up in the fire
truck and taken to the station for some
training and lunch. The second place
student was allowed to choose any book
and the fire department purchased it.
Mourwan Ali was the lucky winner of the
book.
