From the Sport Captain
Welcome to the start of the Mt A sporting year. My name is Jenna Peisley and I have
the great privilege of being your Sport Captain for 2017. Helping me in this amazing
role is a very talented Sport Committee, with Taleah Fisk, Shazy Elrasheed and
Raechelle Gilmour. The Sport Committee and I have planned some really exciting
initiatives to get everyone motivated and passionate about sport, leading up to carnivals
and school competitions.
Our sporting year has begun and the girls have chosen which sports they would like to get involved in
over the next term. There was a choice of Indoor Cricket, Futsal, Volleyball, Tennis, AFL and Touch
Junior. Stay tuned to hear some great results from these teams.
Last Thursday around 40 girls participated in a house novelty event to
get into the sporting spirit, leading up to the swimming carnival which
is next Friday. On the day girls competed in two relays each; the first
one was a floatation device relay and the second one was a noodle
race. Congrats to Spoleto and Perugia for taking out the prizes!
Great work to all the girls who participated; I’ll be very excited to see
everyone getting involved at next week’s swimming carnival.
Speaking of the carnival, I hope everyone is inspired to try at least one event on the day. It’s a day of
fun and camaraderie for everyone, regardless of whether or not you count yourself as a ‘swimmer’.
If nothing else, it will be a chance to get cool on what will probably be another stinking hot day.

From the Sport Development Leader
Welcome to the first Activities Corner for 2017, I find I am settling in well and getting
to the core business of encouraging maximum participation of the girls in activity.
I am amazed at the variety of sport that is offered throughout the College. I am a
large believer that exercise has a more important role than fitness or competition.
School age is where we can influence the girls on how sport and healthy living fits
into the grand scheme of life and overall heath. We need to encourage our daughters that fitness is important,
and be inspirational and creative in the ways we engage them. I will be tracking participation across the year
levels this year to have some data to report back with.
In the meantime here is a snapshot of what is happening at the College this term:
 Cheersport had its first two ‘come and try’ days, with good numbers of girls turning out and getting
involved. I can’t wait to see the girls trained up and in action against what is quickly evolving as a popular
sport in Australia.
 Triathlon has had no rest, with the girls competing locally around South East Queensland in various
triathlons. Training has resumed at school on a Thursday night, with a mixture of bikes skills, swim, run,
and transition work. It has been nice to see the triathletes in the pool in the morning with the swimmers
and no doubt they will be pleased cross country season is starting next week
 Wednesday afternoon CaSSSA sport is starting next week. The Trimester 1 sports are Indoor Cricket,
Volleyball, Touch, and AFL. If your daughter is participating she will need you to sign her permission slip
that can be found up on Moodle.
 Tennis had a hot start to the season. The girls have been training well, but mother nature had other
ideas for them last weekend with the heatwave conditions. CaSSSA made the decision to cancel the
fixtures so this weekend will be the first serve for our teams.
 Futsal is ever present and ingrained in the College, with Mr Rodgers and Mr. Fisher rallying our teams
and getting them ready to compete in the upcoming SEQLD titles. We did very well last year and,
looking at the skill level, I think we will be playing well again.
 Cross Country starts Monday, 20 February, and we are hoping to see a great turnout of girls to not only
train for the interschool and CaSSSA meet but just be active and healthy before school. The will train
Monday and Wednesday mornings here from the college grounds.
 Equestrian has a small following here at the College and there are at least three girls who will be
competing in the IQ competition. We will be following their progress over the term.
Inter School Swim Carnival
Friday 24 February is the interschool Carnival at Centenary Pool.
Parents are welcome to drop by during the day to cheer on the
girls as we find our House and Age Champions.

From the Cultural Captain
Hello, I’m Sarah Carrasco and I’m this year’s Cultural Captain! In my final
year, I am studying SOR, English, Maths, Music, IT, and Music Extension.
The Arts are an important part of my life and have essentially shaped who I
am as a person, and I definitely would not be the same person I am today if
I didn’t attempt to give my best to the Arts. I have played violin since Year 3, which has
given me so many amazing opportunities and I’ve always appreciated Art (even if I wasn’t
ever that great at it).
My family’s cultural origins are Chilean/Spanish and I’m proud to be able to embrace this
culture at Mt A. This year I’d really love to for girls to embrace who they are and where
they come from, and for everyone to get involved in every opportunity they get.
I’m definitely hyped for this year’s Cultural Festival but I’m also really looking forward to
allowing our Art and Drama students to display their work more regularly, and I’m
excited for the clubs that will be starting up this year including the A Capella Club and
Ukulele Club.
Fun Facts: I love most types of music, but at the moment I really enjoy Glass Animals; one
of my favourite movies is Mad Max; my favourite food is chicken and corn soup!
I’m super excited for this year, and I really hope everyone will all take advantage of the
great cultural activities Mt A has to offer.
Yours in Culture
Sarah

Arts Activities
Over the holidays two of our current senior student were given opportunities to further develop their
skills and expertise in Visual Art and Music. Congratulations to Georgia and Natalie. Read about their
experiences below.
Georgia Wright - Year 12 Visual Art Student
Recipient of the Dr Lynham Scholarship for Art
At the end of my time in the Year 11 academic year, I was fortunate enough
to be awarded the Dr Lynham Scholarship for encouragement. This award
enabled me to attend an art workshop of my choice at the Brisbane Institute
of Art where I could expand my knowledge on a particular medium. I chose
to attend the Watercolour Workshop, as I have always admired that style of
painting, but have not had the chance to try the medium myself.
The workshop went for two full days. Both days had the same schedule. We learned different
techniques in the morning by watching videos and following the examples the teacher produced. In the
afternoon, we were encouraged to paint anything we wanted while implementing the new techniques
we had learnt throughout the day.
Overall, the workshop was enjoyable and I had fun creating artwork with watercolour. This experience
has opened my eyes to new ways of creating art, and I definitely recommend to future art students at
Mount Alvernia to always take any opportunity offered to learn how to utilise different mediums.
I would like to say thank you to Dr Lynham for offering this prize to our Mt A community. It has
provided me with an invaluable experience and empowered me to always continue to strive to improve
and learn new skills in areas which I enjoy.
Natalie Treloar - Year 12 Music Student
Australian Ambassador for the Pacific Honours Ensemble Program (PHEP)
Late last year, I had the honour of traveling to America as an
Australian ambassador for the Pacific Honours Ensemble
Program (PHEP). The program forms part of the Western
International Band Clinic held in Seattle, Washington, and
involves rehearsals and performances with six different
renowned guest conductors from all over the world in an
intensive program.

(continued from previous page)
It was an enriching experience to be surrounded by
inspirational conductors and students alike, who had
such clear passion and love for music. One of my
favourite moments from PHEP would be meeting
Paula Crider, a distinguished conductor and first female
in the state of Texas to serve as Director of Bands.
We discussed the repertoire and the importance of
passion for music. Another highlight of PHEP would be
the opportunity to rehearse with Washington State
University, which performed a diverse range of
repertoire as well as guided tours through the beautiful
old libraries and music facilities.
While in Seattle we got the chance to sightsee. Places such as the Space Needle, Pike Place Markets,
Underground tours, Aquarium, and Seattle Symphony were all amazing experiences. The Experience
Music Project museum was easily my favourite as it is a treasure trove of rare sound recordings, priceless instruments, historic photos, hand-written lyrics, and filmed interviews with music greats. It is also
a hands-on music experience equipped with electric guitars, keyboards, drums, and mixers in private
recording studios. While I was slightly jetlagged and exhausted, Seattle was an invaluable experience of
which I am honoured to have been a part.
Private Music Tuition
Private music lessons during the school day have commenced again for the year.
This is a reminder to students who have already enrolled to ensure they attend
their lesson or email the teacher the previous day if they will be absent or unable
to attend. This avoids payment for a lesson which was not attended. Insufficient
prior notice given to the teacher will result in payment for a missed lesson.
Any students who still wish to take up private voice or piano lessons this year
can contact the teachers directly for further information regarding the program
times and costs:

your 2017 RSL Liaison Officers. We are truly pleased to
have been given these leadership roles and we promise we
won’t let you down.
ROSTER
Term 1
Friday 17 February
Throughout this year, Aimee Doolan and I will be
representing and communicating between our school and
the Kedron-Wavell RSL. It is our role to report to the RSL
about the events occurring in our community at the
monthly meetings and also to inform our community of
opportunities available to both students and their
families. We are both very committed young ladies and will
be happy to speak with anyone who has any inquiries.
Angela Bodman, Jan Nichols
We have already taken initiative in this role at the end of
last year by volunteering to organise and deliver Christmas
hampers to the elderly in the RSL community, as well as
attend the December meeting. We look forward to
working with the school and the Kedron-Wavell RSL in this
wonderful year ahead.
