A Changing Military Environment
IDS Solutions
Modern military forces are today facing a quickly changing
environment. The evolution towards asymmetric warfare
has led to changing needs in strategy, tactics, training and
equipment. Just as the level of training of military personnel
has had to increase to meet the wider range of challenges
that they may face, so has the need for new technologies
to aid them in successfully fulfilling their missions and
also ensuring their safety. Advanced technologies provide
new ways to perform surveillance and reconnaissance
missions, to provide target information and the protection
of personnel, equipment and facilities, as well as the ability
to improve platform survivability through the use of stealth
technologies.
Ship EDF
AZIMUTH
IA-3 Colibrì
Ship EDF provides detailed models and simulations of the
electromagnetic environment (EME), infrared (IR) signature
and radar cross section (RCS) of a new ship’s design and
makes use of advanced electromagnetic solvers as well as
analytical, computational and design procedures which have
been internally developed and validated in a continuous
process since 1982. It provides RCS, IR and EME design
all in the same environment allowing changes in one to be
easily and quickly tested in the others.
AZIMUTH is a system for assessing the various
electromagnetic issues on board a ship including
electromagnetic compatibility and interference (EMC/
EMI) caused by and affecting various different electronic
and antenna systems, and hazards from electromagnetic
radiation to personnel (HERP), equipment (HERE),
ordnance (HERO) and fuel (HERF).
The IA-3 Colibrì is a micro UAS with a maximum take-off
weight of up to 5.0 kg which can be used for surveillance
and reconnaissance missions. The fast, accurate and
streamlined collection and real-time downlink of high
quality aerial imagery and digital data, together with wide
image processing options and the ability to reach the most
inaccessible of places make the IA-3 Colibrì a perfectlyintegrated end-to-end solution for aerial surveying and
discreet surveillance.
In addition, military forces are facing the challenges
presented by the increasing need to perform missions such
as disaster relief, anti-piracy patrols, anti-smuggling and
refugee rescue and support. These missions often require
the ability to cover large areas, a role that can aided by the
use of modern technologies.
A History of Military Engineering
IDS Ingegneria Dei Sistemi was formed in 1980 with
a mission to provide qualified support in the field of
systems engineering. By 1982 it was involved in projects
in the military field, collaborating with a major defense
manufacturer in the definition of a vehicle mounted anti
helicopter system. It was soon also working on contracts
for the Italian Ministry of Defense and collaborating with
the Italian naval research center on electromagnetic
prediction tools and measurement systems. In the late
1980s IDS expanded its interests to aerial platforms,
collaborating in analysis and design relating to the
electromagnetic challenges facing military aircraft, the
evaluation of airborne radar and the definition of a system
of IR (infrared) signature measurement.
The expertise and experience gained from these projects
enabled IDS to develop integrated software frameworks
for the electromagnetic prediction and design of naval and
aerial platforms and components. Furthermore the growing
reputation of IDS’s capabilities led to important contracts
with various Ministries of Defence and major Italian and
international defense industries. Similarly, IDS’s work on
radar signature measurement and on civilian radar systems
has led to the development of specialized radar systems
for use in the military field in areas such as incoming fire
detection and through wall radars.
Since 2007, following development work alongside leading
aeronautical industries, IDS has been developing a range
of rotary and fixed wing unmanned aerial systems (UAS)
with autonomous flight, take-off and landing capabilities.
FL.E.E.T.
NADIR Radar
NADIR Radar is a flexible radar system for use in an inshore
environment designed to perform dynamic measurements
of full-scale ships to provide radar cross section (RCS),
high resolution range profiles (HRRP), hourglass plots and
inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images.
NADIR Planar Scanner
NADIR Planar Scanner is a cost effective, flexible and
transportable measurement system which provides
accurate radar cross section (RCS) assessments. NADIR
Planar Scanner is a near field measurement system
featuring a planar scanner to acquire 2D/3D synthetic
aperture radar (SAR) images of the target and converts
them to undistorted far field like radar images.
ZENITH
ZENITH is a system for assessing the infrared (IR)
signature of a moving target at sea and can be used
either from the shore or from a helicopter. It provides a
temperature calibrated high resolution image of the ship
under test and performs a temperature and radiometric
analysis in order to identify an infrared signature.
IA-17 Manta
FL.E.E.T. provides navies with the ability to assess, manage
and control the electromagnetic characteristics of a naval
fleet throughout its lifecycle from the initial design stage
through to final decommissioning. The electromagnetic
simulation and design software is backed up by a suite
of mobile state-of-the-art measurement systems which
provide accurate validation of the RCS, IR and EME models
and predictions. FL.E.E.T.’s database provides navies
with a complete picture of the electromagnetic capabilities
and parameters of each individual ship in a fleet. This
includes information on each ship’s history and how their
performance has changed over time due to configuration
changes and general performance degradation. This helps
to assess the impact of any work on a ship and whether
it is advantageous to perform the same work on other
vessels of the same class.
The IA-17 Manta is a small fixed wing UAS whose
flying wing configuration has been designed in order to
provide the best performance when employed for patrol,
surveillance, aerial observation and reconnaissance
missions. The modular construction of the platform offers
the capability to easily install different sensor payloads
and its lift and control surfaces are optimized to achieve
maximum endurance and a high cruising speed with a
maximum take-off weight of 17.0 kg.
Satellite Communications
SD-150 Hero
The SD-150 Hero is a state-of-the-art vertical take-off and
landing (VTOL) unmanned air system (UAS) able to fly
a completely autonomous preprogrammed mission from
take-off to landing and which incorporates multiple safety
features to help ensure a successful mission. It has a
maximum takeoff weight of 150 kg and offers two modular
payload bays (underbelly and nose) which can integrate
different payloads in order to fulfill a variety of different
missions including reconnaissance, route clearance,
SIGINT, COMINT and communication relay.
IDS, in collaboration with Skytech Ltd., is able to offer a
range of multiband satellite communications terminals for
the naval environment. These can provide high speed,
high bandwidth internet connections ideal for video
communications as well as high speed, high security data
links.
