Luetke CHAIR hen noting her reasons for establishing a fund with the Toledo Community Foundation, one of our enthusiastic supporters stated, “You start from the vantage point that the future is worth supporting.” Honestly, we could not have said it better. When generous people like you choose the Toledo Community Foundation as a means of meeting the needs of others, we make possible brighter futures for everyone touched by your gifts. The institutions and causes our donors support could be educational, such as the Toledo Technology Academy, whose students are featured on our cover. Many donors support social programs, like the Mountain Mentors program to help atrisk teens profiled on the next page. The numerous cultural, environmental and community activities reflected in our report, and hundreds of other organizations, flourish thanks to individual gifts to the Foundation. keith burwell PRESIDENT Every one of these gifts expresses a vision of a better tomorrow that the Foundation works diligently to make real. Careful stewardship of our supporters’ resources during a difficult economic period has us looking to a brighter future, too, as we enter our 40th year. Because of this, our capacity to make grants and scholarships has grown from our humble beginnings in 1973 to an impressive $170 million in assets today. Those of us on the volunteer board, committees and staff of the Toledo Community Foundation are profoundly grateful for the faith you have placed in us. The work the Foundation does would not be possible without the many generous people acknowledged in this report, and we look forward to ever-increasing partnership with them and others in building a brighter future throughout our community for many years to come. Sincerely, Mark D. Luetke Chair, Board of Trustees Keith Burwell President 3 4 Mentor, Kaitlin Swindaman with Esther (Star) Bowman Building Brighter Futures: mentors make a difference M ountain Mentors began in 1984 with the mission of “empowering at-risk teens through one-on-one mentoring to make positive life choices.” Established as an alternative-toincarceration program, the organization pairs adults and youth in mentoring relationships. Fostering life skills through various activities, the original year-long program culminated in a 5-day wilderness hike through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Recently, Mountain Mentors leadership determined they could recruit more mentors — and serve more at-risk youth for longer — by adding a year-long, Ohio-based cycling component in rotation with the existing hiking program. To secure essential equipment, they turned to the Toledo Community Foundation for help. “The bike program is more ‘sustainable,’ both in terms of being environmentally friendly and in terms of the mentoring program’s growth,” stated program director Steve Toth. “We have several activities in the Northwest Ohio area to prepare our team for the week-long, 250+ mile Great Ohio Bike Adventure. All these events are closer to home, which involves more community people and increases the teens’ scope of what’s available nearby.” Mentor Sue Thayer agrees. “Mountain Mentors’ cycling program is a rigorous outdoor experience — but it’s not as physically demanding as the hiking, so that allows The 2013 Toledo Mountain Mentors cyclists enjoy a moment together before a group training ride. me to stay actively involved,” she notes. “I’m mentoring a gal this year who is the younger sister of two young ladies I mentored in years past. They’re practically my extended family now — so I’m thrilled I can continue to be a Mountain Mentor.” Adds Toth, “We really appreciate the opportunity the Foundation grant afforded us. With cycling added to hiking, we strengthen recruitment appeal, offer our teens another year of mentoring, and teach important skills for lifetime use. We’re grateful to the Foundation for helping expand our service to the community.” To learn more about Toledo Community Foundation grant programs and how to apply, visit www.toledocf.org/grants/overview/ or contact Sarah Harrison, senior program officer, at 419.241.5049 or [email protected]. 5 Building Brighter Futures: generations of generosity “There are two kinds of giving. One is to give now and the other is giving for the future. The Foundation is equipped to provide that oversight and help us carry on our legacy.” — Sam Carson, 2004 6 I n the Carson family, giving has been a foundation of happiness for generations. So when sisters Betsy Carson Brady and Mary Carson Fedderke, unbeknownst to each other, established donor advised funds with the Toledo Community Foundation in the very same week, the coincidence somehow just seemed natural. “It goes back to our parents,” the sisters observed. “All five of us kids saw how happy Mom and Dad were when they were involved — they had a lifestyle of giving. We realized early what joy it brought to have a positive impact.” Among many other contributions to the community, Mary and Betsy’s father, Sam Carson, served on the initial Toledo Community Foundation board of trustees in 1973-78, and with his wife, Alice, established both the Carson Family Metroparks Fund and Carson Family Donor Advised Fund. Nearly 20 years later, Betsy followed her father’s example, becoming president of the Foundation board. All the Carson children and their spouses enjoy identifying needs they can meet through the funds their parents created, and their own gifts. “We look for something that touches our heart,” said Mary. “Foundation staff can be instrumental in finding the people, projects and programs that are right for us.” Now, to extend the tradition of giving to the next generation, establishing their own families’ donor advised funds was the natural path. “It’s too soon to know exactly what to support in the years ahead,” observed Betsy, “but we do know there are many community needs to be addressed. Our donor advised funds are a flexible way to make the decision to help others now, and define what that will become in the future.” Tom and Betsy Brady, Alice and Sam Carson, Mary and John Fedderke Building Brighter Futures: a lived-in legacy J ohn and Lois Shelly faced a dilemma experienced by many older couples. They were concerned that their son, who lives in Montana, would someday be left with the disposition of their home, and they hoped to spare him this difficulty. The Shellys were able to achieve that goal — and much more — with a retained life estate gift to the Toledo Community Foundation. The original Shelly plan was to sell their beautiful, custom-built villa and move to a senior community in the area. The villa had been on the market for six months when a new solution presented itself. “I was paging through the Foundation newsletter last summer when the headline, ‘Give Property While Continuing to Enjoy its Use’ jumped out at me,” said John. “We established two funds with the Foundation in 1999, including a legacy fund that had not yet been capitalized. When we saw that we could gift our home and still live in it, we thought this might work for us.” Lois and John Shelly The Shellys’ attorney, Stephen Keller, helped coordinate their donation with Foundation staff. “A retained life estate gift is sometimes also helpful for tax reasons,” Keller observed, “but this need not be the primary concern.” John and Lois agree. “Dealing with the house isn’t ultimately the main reason for our gift. We’re like so many in Toledo — we’ve had a good life here, and we want to leave something to this place that has given so much to us. The Foundation knows the community’s needs, and they are helping us to meet them.” For assistance with simple estate planning, information about current or deferred giving, or to join our Legacy Society, please contact Bridget Brell Holt or Ben Imdieke, philanthropic services officers, at 419.241.5049, [email protected] or [email protected]. 7 Establishing a fund Take a moment to consider the important part you might play in Toledo Community Foundation’s work by creating a charitable fund. There are a number of ways to get started, and we invite you to explore them with your family, your professional advisor and with Foundation staff members. T he Foundation offers a variety of ways for you to make donations to reach your philanthropic goals. You can establish your own Foundation fund either during your lifetime or through your estate plan. All grants distributed from your fund – today and in the future – are awarded to charities, as determined by you, in the name of your fund. 8 Your gift to the Foundation may be made in many forms. Corporations and businesses are limited to gifts of cash, securities, closely-held stock, limited partnership interests and real estate. You and your family have even more options to consider. Vehicles For Giving A cash gift is tax deductible as provided under current law. Donations of appreciated publicly-traded securities are accepted. This type of gift avoids capital gains tax and allows the maximum tax deduction for the full market value of the gift. The Foundation also accepts closely-held stock and limited partnership interests. A bequest in your will is a simple way to leave a lasting legacy. A life insurance policy can be changed to designate the Foundation as the owner and/or beneficiary of a policy. Retirement fund accounts are often your largest asset. You can give all or part of these assets to the Foundation, both during your lifetime and/or at your death. Real estate (land, primary residences, vacation homes or farm land) can be donated to the Foundation and deducted at full fair market value, up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. The Foundation sells the real estate and the net proceeds capitalize a new fund or are added to an existing fund. Similarly, tangible personal property can be donated to the Foundation, which is also then sold. A charitable remainder trust allows you (or other named beneficiaries) to receive lifetime income. Upon your death, the remaining principal creates a fund at the Foundation. You receive an immediate charitable deduction for a portion of the gift and avoid capital gains tax. A charitable lead trust creates income for the Foundation for a specified period, after which the remaining principal is distributed to named beneficiaries. Gift and estate taxes are reduced with this type of gift. Transfer of a private foundation affords you many advantages, including lower overhead, staff to assist with your charitable goals and a higher tax deduction for any future gift, to name only a few. things to consider 01 02 Define your charitable goals. Decide if you want family members involved, both now and/or in the future. Consider how much involvement you want in selecting the charitable organizations that will receive grants from your fund. Think about how much you want to give in charitable contributions each year. Contact a philanthropic services officer at the Foundation to discuss the fund option or options (described on pages 10 and 11) that best suit your interests and needs. We can create a personalized plan, including the appropriate legal and other documentation, which makes giving simple and relevant. 03 04 Determine which asset or giving vehicle you will use to start your fund. Evaluate the options of lifetime assets versus planned giving assets — or a combination of the two. Select a name for your fund. Many donors choose a family name, a name that honors or memorializes a loved one or a company name. GETTING STARTED To inquire about starting a fund at the Foundation, please contact Ben Imdieke or Bridget Brell Holt, philanthropic services officers, at 419.241.5049, [email protected] or [email protected]. 9 Fund Options Choosing a fund option that is right for you Toledo Community Foundation provides professional management and investment of charitable funds as well as personalized services to meet the goals of individuals, families, businesses and nonprofits. There are many flexible ways to support your interests – the choice is yours. How involved do you want to be in your grant making? Do you want to give to a specific organization or a specific area of interest? Launch a scholarship to honor or memorialize a loved one? Restrict your giving to northwestern Ohio and/or fund internationally? Create or continue your business giving program? Whatever your giving goals, there is a fund option for you. The Foundation offers a number of fund options for you, your family, businesses and nonprofit organizations. A fund at the Foundation operates like a private foundation, but without the administrative and legal burdens associated with private foundations. The funds are flexible and you decide how much or how little you want to be involved in making grants. 10 Community Fund Designated Fund Respond to changing times Support effective organizations A Community Fund is the broadest option and leaves the decisions about your gift to the Foundation. You trust the Foundation’s extensive experience and knowledge of the community to identify the most pressing needs and effective programs. A Community Fund provides maximum assurance a fund will remain timely and relevant. Grants from these funds are given to qualified organizations to support the well-being and vitality of our region and its residents. You support one or more specific charitable organization or institution in perpetuity. A Designated Fund may help a single theatre, a food bank or a school during your life and after your death. If a beneficiary organization ceases to exist, loses its tax exempt status or changes its mission, the Foundation redirects support to a similar organization to honor your original intent. Donor Advised Fund Engage with your giving You take a more active role in your grant making (whether local, national or international). A Donor Advised Fund provides maximum flexibility for your grant making, allowing designated advisors (named by you) to make recommendations regarding grants from your fund. The Foundation facilitates compliance with financial, legal and tax requirements, as well as helps develop grant making strategies, articulates funding guidelines and conducts due diligence, relieving you of the administrative responsibilities associated with charitable giving. If you wish, the Foundation helps you identify additional organizations that you might consider supporting. You have several options. •Single advised fund – Allows only you to make grant recommendations. •Family advised fund – Provides a simple and popular way for your family to engage in organized philanthropy. •Corporate advised fund – Offers flexible options for your business and/or employees’ charitable giving programs. Your company or business can outsource all, or any part, of its charitable giving program to the Foundation for management. You can endow your fund, requiring that the principal of the fund remains untouched and only a percentage of the annual earnings on the fund are available for grant making; or you can create a growth fund (non-endowed) allowing the flexibility to distribute both fund principal and annual earnings, although not below the minimum required fund balance of $10,000. Donor Directed Pooled Fund Direct your giving to specific organizations This type of fund allows you the privilege, during your lifetime, to annually designate specific charitable organizations to receive grants from your fund. Field of Interest Fund Connect personal values to grant making You direct funding to specific causes (the environment, youth programs or the arts, for instance) or geographi- cal areas (a town, county or region) that you feel strongly about, yet it does not restrict grants to any one particular organization. Field of Interest Funds support issues or areas that are important to you in perpetuity. Organization Endowment Fund Sustain nonprofit organizations The Foundation’s years of experience with the nonprofit community enables us to assist other charitable organizations in managing their assets. By establishing an endowment fund at the Foundation, nonprofit organizations are relieved of the administrative burdens and costs associated with holding their own endowment fund, while receiving a steady stream of income for operations, programming or other organizational needs. Scholarship Fund Invest in education You establish an educational scholarship for a specific interest. Scholarships can support any level of education, and may be directed toward students who are graduates of a particular grade or high school, students planning to attend a particular secondary or post-secondary school, students in a particular field or students from a certain geographical area. Supporting Organization Partner with the Foundation for access to community information A Supporting Organization is a separate and distinct legal and grant making entity that is in direct affiliation with the Foundation. It maintains its own board of trustees which has decision-making authority relevant to grant recipients and other matters. A Supporting Organization’s alliance with the Foundation reduces administrative, investment and regulatory burdens. Family involvement, individual attention, flexibility, professional staffing and access to community information are among the key reasons that families and businesses create supporting organizations at Toledo Community Foundation. 11 Philanthropic centers 1 Toledo Community Foundation offers four Centers for Philanthropy through which our professional staff works to meet our donors’ diverse needs. The Foundation’s mission involves a commitment to ensuring that nonprofit organizations in our region have the information and resources required to operate in an efficient and effective manner.
