INTERNSHIP BULLETIN Compiled By: Mary Kate Baehl Fall 2015 Charting Unknown Territory: Four Reminders for Approaching an Internship Search By: Matthew Pouss, Assistant Director/Internship Coordinator of Career Center Welcome to the Fall Internship Bulletin. Many current professionals have gone through the internship process at one time. For students starting an internship search for the first time, the search may have countless questions and unknowns. How does one find an internship? What is the best way to apply? How does someone prepare for an interview? The whole process can feel daunting, but it can also be broken down into more manageable steps. Simple reminders can help keep your expectations in check and get you started in a positive way. Incorporating the following tasks can help aid the search: 1. Research and find information on employers and the search process. 2. Get ready to present yourself in person, on paper, and online. 3. Talk, network, and communicate with people during the search. 4. Perform the three above items well. IN THIS ISSUE Charting Unknown Territory 1 Fall Internship Spotlight 2-3 Buying Business Clothes on a College Student Budget 4-5 Yes, getting an internship is work. Everything done during the Calendar 6 entire process is preparation for jobs and careers. However, would you rather put the time and effort to doing the hard work Internship Postings 10-11 now, or wait until later and play catch up with your career? It is probably unrealistic that there is such a thing as a “perfect” opportunity. Rather, find something where you see the potential to learn new skills, build relationships with professionals interested in your development, and complete work you are interested in doing. It will probably feel like you are taking another step into being an adult. Do not worry; be confident and open-minded about the step you are taking as you rise up to the challenge. As we pass the halfway point of the fall semester, ask yourself how you might be able to complete an internship during the spring, summer, or fall in 2016. Know that you have support from your Mount community (Career Center, administration, faculty, friends, and others) as you start taking steps in this process. May this issue of the Internship Bulletin help ignite your 1 search for new opportunities. Hoffman Homes for Youth is a residential Fall Internship Spotlight psychiatric facility for children with serious mental health diagnoses. NIH, the National By: Mary Kate Baehl Institute of Health, is the nation’s medical research agency. Mark’s Mount education prepared him in different ways for both of these internships. He cites that his liberal arts education with his philosophy minor and the focus on “what it means to be human” is very applicable to his internship with Hoffman Homes, helping him understand and connect with the children there while interacting and talking to them. The strong research background he has with his psychology major helps with his duties at NIH, as he is doing primarily administrative-oriented work. At Hoffman Homes, Mark feels he has more of Fall: the leaves are crisp, the days are colder a hands on role and thinks this internship is more and school is back in full swing. Besides juggling of what he wants to do in the future. Hoffman classes and activities, a lot of students are also homes is “a lot of action”: there is always squeezing in a fall internship, some even two. I something going on. Then he talks to the kids minor in philosophy, he is currently taking three individually about the experience and writes up classes, splitting his time between two reports. Working with the kids at Hoffman internships and running the Self-Defense club on Homes has been a great experience and Mark campus. He plans on entering a PhD program feels like he really connects with them. right out of college. Mark’s internship at NIH is a change of pace. The paid internship is mostly administrative 2 support. His duties involve scheduling, communicating with the scientists and other logistics. His NIH internship only started a few of weeks ago and he’s hoping to get involved more with the science aspect of NIH. Both internships are great for different reasons. Mark finds Hoffman Homes valuable because its hands on and more geared towards what he thinks he wants to do in terms of clinical work. He also feels like he is making a bigger impact. NIH is a new and interesting experience because he gets to be on the military base, visit the library of medicine and work with people who are the best in their fields. His advice to students looking for internships is to apply early and to complete an internship before your senior year. Internships provide more real world job experience and help you figure out what you potentially want to do. Also, employers like Hoffman Homes and NIH require background checks and finger printing, which take a while to process. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people. Mark secured his internship with Hoffman Homes by looking up psychiatric facilities in the area, he then reached out to the Vice President of Clinical programs there about interning. While two internships seems like a lot to juggle, the hands-on experiences are well worth it. 3 sales as well as Factory stores.
