FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
APRIL 2, 2017
A Word from Our Pastor, Fr. Ron Weissbeck
My dear family in Christ,
I have often heard it said, “You don’t appreciate something until it’s taken from you.” This applies to
life more than to things. I often recall the words of my mom before she died—“You’re going to miss me.”
There are those special moments and family gatherings where that is true. No one can replace the persons
whom we love and who love us.
This Sunday, the gospel passage is from John, chapter 11. It involves the raising of Lazarus, the brother of Martha
and Mary. This is a glimpse of a special relationship that Jesus had, and is recorded in John’s Gospel. After Jesus arrives at
the home of Martha and Mary, He is greeted by these words, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have
died” (John 11:21). It is natural for Martha to give that response to Jesus. The void is evident, the brother has already been
interned which makes the scene that much more dramatic. “You weren’t here when we needed you” would also apply to the
way Martha and Mary felt regarding Jesus. We expect those who are close to us to be at our side when being faced with
pain, sickness, and especially death. We don’t want to be alone when life is radically changed.
The scene has been set, but this is a moment of faith and clarity; Jesus is not only able to restore the brother to life
but offer the ultimate, life eternal. Here the liturgy makes a connection with the rite that is being celebrated—the third
scrutiny. Jesus has already said that He came to bring life and offer it generously (John 10:10). This is fulfilled in this
radical restoration of life.
The faith that was first expressed by the Samaritan women at the well and clarified in the gift of sight to the blind
man is now brought to center stage by the action of Jesus, who is not a disinterested bystander, but a close friend, to bring
back from the dead a brother, Lazarus.
What is being offered to all of us is that Jesus gives us the gift that can only come from God, eternal life.
Nevertheless, it takes the human journey to arrive at that final and radical change. Jesus raised Lazarus from the tomb but
he was going to die again because only the resurrection of Jesus from the dead brought about a radical reorientation of
creation. Only in the Risen Lord is all brought into light and focus. This is summarized in the first response that Jesus
offers to Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who
lives and believes in me will never die” (John 11:25-26).
The catechumens who are going through this process are declaring to all of us that they have heard the words of
Jesus and are taking them to heart. Where are the rest of us? It’s more than words rolling off of our lips but the living out of
the “yes” that we have given to the Lord Jesus. This is renewed and deepened every time we come to the liturgy. The Mass
is only “boring” if we have chosen not to be engaged with Him who died to set us free.
Jesus says to us as He put the question to Martha, “Do you believe this” (John 11:26)? If we genuinely believe, we
come not because it’s a law, but because we want to be there to give ourselves to the Father, personally, as did Jesus. Every
time we gather, we enter into the gift of making present and clarifying that Jesus is Lord.

Blessing Bags for the Homeless
Praying by the Tabernacle
Many of our sacramental candidates attended our retreat this past Saturday here at St. John’s. We were blessed to have
Fr. Greg Ames and his nephew, Seth Hostetler, a seminarian, in to talk with the children about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit,
praying and vocations. It was a wonderful day in which all stepped away from our busy lives and spent a day in prayerful
reflection.
St. John’s Food Bank News
By John Williams
New Garage Door at the Food Bank!
For the last 8 years we have been using the garage
door that came with the building. It has been through many
deliveries and donations and has sustained high winds, blistering
heat, snowfalls, and the occasional bump and bruise. As the
door’s condition worsened, we had to operate it manually.
On Thursday, March 16th, we had a new door installed
and it is operating beautifully. The automatic door opener and
closer is functional once again so we no longer have to struggle
lifting and closing the new door. It seals very snuggly, no
longer allowing cold and heat to enter.
While I’m sure this isn’t earth shattering news to most
people, it’s kind of a big deal for all of our volunteers here at the
food bank. I wish to thank all of our generous parishioners who
donate to our food bank, making this improvement possible.
And thank you to all our volunteers who have been patient with
the door’s replacement!

RCIA News
This weekend we witness the 3rd scrutiny
following the gospel account of the raising of
Anna Campbell
Lazarus. The catechumen have gone through
these rituals in preparation of receiving the sacraments of
initiation at the Easter Vigil. Please continue to keep our
Elect and Candidates in your prayers. During this more
intense time of preparation, they have been asked to do a
deeper preparation by answering three questions for each
of the scrutinies. I want to share one of them: What has
your journey of faith taught you about your thirst for
meaning, community, and God? One answer was “My
journey of faith has taught me the more I learn about God
and study the Bible, the more I want to know, understand,
and become part of the Church. Over the course of my
journey I have seen and experienced the community of
the Church and I really love and appreciate it, and I want
to be a part of it. Also, my journey has taught me that
God loves me and always will no matter what, and that is
awesome!”

CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST
LONGMONT, COLORADO
Live the Liturgy
As our season of Lent quickly draws to a close, we are
reminded today that God’s creative and life giving presence
is always at work, bringing light out of darkness and new
life out of death. The prophet Ezekiel reminds us that
God’s spirit is within us. Realizing this allows us to endure
not only our eventual physical deaths but any difficulty,
disappointment, or crisis we may encounter. God’s desire
to bring all things into loving union with Him is eternal.

with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy inside St. Francis Parish
right after the walk. We hope to arrive about 11:30 a.m.
Father Frank will be available for confessions.

walk a shorter distance or need a wheelchair, we hope to
arrive at JC Penney on Hover and Nelson Roads at
9:45 a.m. Please park on the north side of the building and
look for us. We will gather there for ten minutes of prayer
and a restroom break.
You may bring wagons, strollers, sunscreen,
rosaries, water, and snacks. You may also want to bring
your own lunch to eat at the end of the walk. Please do
NOT bring bikes, skates, scooters, iPods, music, or social

need to bring that as well. Please dress for the weather!
There will be cars available at St. Francis to take walkers
back to St. John’s and JC Penney to retrieve their cars.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
APRIL 2, 2017
La Página Español
MJUERTE Y VIDA

sizes provide a more personal and intimate environment in which to learn. Students are able to form close relationships with
teachers and support staff which allows our teachers to truly know your child and make their educational experience
successful. Give your child the confidence of a seamless transition from preschool to our K-8 program. What could be
better than a program that works in partnership with students and families for the duration of their elementary and middle
school education? We are setting the standard in Catholic education in the Rocky Mountain region!

Women, W.I.N.E. & Wisdom at St. Francis
Come learn why women are pivotal to the new
evangelization. Pope Francis proclaimed that women make
an indispensable contribution to the Church and to society.
In essence, he was saying the Church needs WINE: Women
In the New Evangelization! So, what is this distinctive skill
set that we women tend to possess that makes us
indispensable? Join us for Women, WINE & Wisdom at
St. Francis on April 20th at 7:00 p.m. and you’ll find out!
