Editor’s Note: Overshadowed by its significant ruling
regarding the consecration of an openly lesbian bishop, the
Judicial Council did issue other important decisions. Below,
the Rev. Walter Fenton reviews one of them and the Rev.
Thomas Lambrecht addresses two others. Judicial Council,

Judicial Council Upholds Bishop’s Rejection of Cynical
Resolution….
Without any dissenting opinions, the Council affirmed Bishop
Mark J. Webb’s decision to rule a resolution passed by the
delegates of Northeastern Jurisdiction to be “null, void and of no
effect.” The resolution, presented at the jurisdiction’s July 2016
meeting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, called on the region’s
bishops to refuse to hear complaints, initiate investigations, or
conduct church trials for pastors who preside at same sex
services or who self-avow as openly gay clergypersons. The
resolution was initially ruled out of order because it called on
bishops to violate the church’s Book of Discipline. In an attempt
to salvage it, the Rev. Gere Reist, the former secretary of
the denominations’ General Conference, offered the following
amendment: that the ten annual conferences in the jurisdiction
should instruct their separate councils on finance and
administration (CFA) to “state that there are no funds available
for initiating and processing of complaints and initiating

CHURCH HAPPENINGS…
Father/Child Breakfast
There will be a Father/Child Breakfast on Saturday, June
3rd. The breakfast will be held at the Amish Door in
Wilmot at 8:30 a.m. Thanks to all who have signed up
to participate. See you there!
Moms of Faith
The Moms of Faith Group will meet on Tuesday, June 6th
at 6:00 p.m. and will continue to get together on the first
Tuesday of every month for the summer. If you are a
mother and would like to fellowship with us – come and
join us! After the summer is over, we will be meeting
during our JOY Club hours on Tuesday nights.
Art Project
Have you been wondering about the art project in the
Education Wing? We know you have and I hope you are
excited about it! Emma Edinger had the wonderful idea
for the whole congregation to leave their handprints on
the wall in paint for posterity. Well, that idea has grown
to include a full 42 foot mural. It is a woodland scene
and will depict all four seasons. Now, I am sure you are
wondering just where the handprints come in. Your
handprints will become the leaves on the trees, the rays of
sunshine, the flowers and animals! As people join the
congregation and new babies are born to us, they too will
add their handprints to the wall. So get ready! Your turn
to paint is coming soon!

Puzzles
Above the coat rack in the hallway of the church are
boxes and boxes of puzzles. These can be used by
anyone from Fohl. Take a few and put them together or
donate a couple of puzzles that you’ve already put
together. They are for everyone.

administration (CFA) to “state that there are no funds available
for initiating and processing of complaints and initiating of
investigations and trials based upon the sexual orientation or
marital status of faithful United Methodists or involving clergy
for conducting same-sex weddings.” It was one of the more
cynical amendments we have heard proposed in order to skirt
church law. Clearly neither Reist nor any other delegate had
consulted with the CFAs to determine whether such a statement
was true or not. But the progressive majority marveled and
rejoiced at Reist’s clever amendment. And even Bishop Thomas
Bickerton, who was presiding at the time, congratulated him for
a maneuver that would apparently allow the bishops to rule the
resolution in order. Bishop Mark J. Webb A delegate from the
Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference did have a comment
and a question: “I have trouble with this amendment,” he said.
“Aren’t we essentially asking people to lie?” Some delegates
were sobered by the observation, but ultimately 96 out of 160
decided the ends justified the means; asking people to lie in the
interest of the LGBTQ+ agenda seemed fine with them. At a
later session a delegate asked for a decision of law regarding the
resolution’s legitimacy. Since Webb was then the presiding
bishop, it fell to him to issue a ruling within 30 days. (All
decisions of law by a bishop are subject to the Judicial Council’s
review.) In a stinging rebuke, Webb found the whole resolution
to be out of order. He noted that it ran afoul of prior Judicial
Council rulings, would violate the Discipline’s instructions
regarding funds for church counsel and trials, and worst of all,
violated the church’s constitution. In its decision upholding
Webb’s ruling the Council wrote, “[jurisdictional conferences]
may not pass resolutions that encourage a violation of Church
law or discourage the enforcement of Church law. The Untitled
Resolution adopted by the Northeastern Jurisdictional
Conference is contrary to the Constitution
and The Discipline and, therefore, null and void. The bishop’s
Decision of Law is affirmed.”

Youth News. . .
The spring session for the Youth Group is coming to a
close. We will be taking the month of July off. We have a
few big ticket items left to do. We had a good outing at the
Hall of Fame Lanes in May. I think Madison Stangelo
found her sport of choice, or maybe not. There was a good
turnout, 10 of us went. We are still planning on either
doing an escape room or returning to the RAC in June. We
are working on fundraisers such as car washes in June to
help foot some of the bill for the Alive Music and Outreach
Festival. So watch for the announcements.
I was able to go to a luncheon put on by the founders of
the Alive Festival and they are very excited about this
year’s changes and events. There are flyers with a coupon
circulating throughout the church if anyone is just
interested in going a day or two. The youth will be
attending from Wednesday, July 19th and returning home
Sunday around 11am on the 23rd. It has been a blast every
year. The cost for this year is the same as last year. I have
to order tickets by June 30th, so if your youth is planning
on attending I need to know no later than June 25 th. That
will be the last day to get tickets at this price.
Christian Education News…
Thank you for an amazing Sunday School year!! I have to say,
when I was told Helen was not returning as a Director, I
immediately felt the pull to step up.
It took me a few months to realize the Lord was calling me to do
it but when I finally gave in and accepted the position (with the
help of some very obvious signs) everything felt lighter and it all
fell into place.
I had some very big shoes to fill. Helen’s leadership has taught
me so much. I have plenty more to learn and I praise God for
everything. I could not have made this a successful year without
you and I am forever grateful for a wonderful church family.
“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
Colossians 1:17
Alive Ticket Cost:
Active members for the last 3 months: $75 for tickets
and shower pass
Non active members: $125 plus $20 for shower pass
“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let
nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of
the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is
not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58
