In an earlier session we looked at how The Ashes came into
being a sporting rivalry. In this session we explore different
rivalries and how they begin and continue.
Learning objectives
To identify why sporting rivalries occur.
To use appropriate vocabulary to write a similar obituary to
The Ashes.
Room layout and preparation

Copies of the ‘Obituary’.
Starter Activity
Show presentation of different images of sporting rivalries e.g.
sporting tops of two teams, trophy that is contested for, photos
of games being played.
Revisit the newspaper ‘obituary’ from the 1882 game, in the
presentation.
Make a link between someone’s death and the idea of ‘The

Ask the pupils to identify a sporting rivalry either from the
presentation or one they have of their own.
Ask the pupils write an obituary of this rivalry – it could be
after a long dominance of one side, whereby the other side
suddenly wins.
The Old Firm (Celtic v Rangers)
El Classico (Barcelona v Real Madrid)
Ryder Cup (Europe v USA
Solheimn Cup (Europe v USA)
Boat Race (Oxford v Cambridge)
Calcutta Cup (England v Scotland)
Ask the pupils identify what the competition is.
Main Activity
Look at the presentation again and discuss how or why the
rivalries came to be.
Discuss any other rivalries that the pupils know about.
Could be local football teams, local cricket teams, school
teams. May be geographically based, may be historically or
other reasons.
Differentiate between a short lived rivalry (often between two
people e.g. Federer v Nadal in tennis) and a long lived rivalry
(one that lasts despite different people playing for the team).
Opportunities for differentiation
This probably an activity for Upper KS2 or KS3 with the
concepts of obituaries.
Where the session is leading...
Identify the reasons for the rivalry and why the series of games
is so important to both sides and the countries.
Assessment Opportunities
Writing AF1 Write imaginative, interesting and thoughtful texts.
