Minor Hockey Week is a week set aside by HNL to celebrate and to show appreciation to those who make participation in Canada’s National Sport possible for our children. The least we can do is pay public tribute to the men and women who spend so many hours organizing and operating the many leagues and games for our children. Hockey provides healthy exercise that will improve the body, discipline the mind, as well as teach co-operation, team play and respect for rules. HNL urges everyone, particularly parents, to join the coaches, managers and organizers to make sure that everyone has fun. Let’s put fun back into hockey. It’s a game not a war. The right attitudes are just as important as the physical skills. Liam Hickey, 14, of St. John’s was invited last week by Hockey Canada to attend a National Development Junior Sledge Hockey Team Camp from February 26— March 3, 2013 in Montreal. Liam plays with the NL Sled Dogs and is expected to be the youngest player attending the camp. Hockey NL in conjunction with Hockey Canada presents 3 officiating awards annually. A local CeeBees Official has been chosen as the recipient of the Most Deserving Official Award for the past hockey season. Selection of the recipient of this Award is based on the individuals On Ice Performance as well as their input into the Branch program and their contribution to the development of other officials. Dean Whelan (Harbour Grace ) has dedicated much of his time into the growth and development of the younger officials in the Conception Bay North area. He is a level 4 certified official himself and an instructor with the HCOP. The officials in the CeeBees Minor Association have looked to Dean for leadership and have a huge amount of respect for him. Several Officials have grown very quickly into being very fine officials. This is a result of Dean's hard work and dedication to the officiating program. Don Kelly, Hockey NL Referee in Chief presented Dean with the HockeyCanada Most Deserving Official Award at a recent Ceebees Senior Hockey game.
