A growing market for retail packed minced meat was the reason why Scan AB in Sweden decided to invest in two new minced meat lines. One for their Malmö plant producing pre-packed retail products and one for their production facilities in Uppsala specializing also in industrial packing for commercial kitchens and shops. In collaboration with Fremo, Marel has supplied minced meat lines for several Scan production facilities in Sweden. Pronounced satisfaction on the part of the meat processing group with previous projects was thus a determining factor in the choice of supplier this time. Flexible approach ”During presentation of the various proposals, it was our flexible approach to their problem of limited space and height that impressed Scan AB. Furthermore, we gave them our word that we could meet the tight design and delivery deadlines, and that coordination and handling of sub-supplier equipment would not pose a problem in terms of time,” says divisional manager at Marel, Ruben Sørensen. In due time ”In order to keep our promise regarding deadlines, we worked very closely with the project department at Scan AB and customer nominated coordinator, K.G. Josefsson. Every detail was taken care of and delivery inspection was performed in due time. Installation at Uppsala was undertaken without causing any disruption and production started up on July 1st. The Malmö line was commissioned on June 25th,” says Ruben Sørensen. Rising demand The Uppsala plant already had a line for retail packed minced meat and now also one for packing of 2.5 and 10 kg units for commercial kitchens. Production takes place during evening and night shifts www.marel.com CASE STUDY with a capacity of 4-6 tons per hour. There seems to be a constant rise in demand, which means that the line is in operation for an increasing number of hours during the night. Early in the morning the meat is distributed directly to customers who thus receive fresh products every day. Increase of market share The investment in new lines in Malmö and Uppsala respectively has contributed greatly to Scan increasing their share of the market for pre-packed minced meat in Sweden. Their products are in great demand owing partly to longer shelf life brought about by the use of gas in the packing process. Besides, consumers can be absolutely sure that Scan products are produced according to the strictest hygienic standards and at the correct temperature.
