The Mott Estate Contemporary Art Artist: Title: Medium: Size: Value: Opening Bid: Courtesy of the Artist Herb Jackson Spirit Double Acrylic on Canvas 42” x 36” $11,000 $6,600 LIVE AUCTION The work and life of internationally acclaimed Artist, and North Carolina icon, Herb Jackson is so known, yet it is a daunting task to write of his work in this brief space. The Artist builds up his work slowly by applying thin layers of pigment. Shapes and marks come and go as Jackson engages the paint, gouging, scouring and excavating each consecutive stratum with whatever tool provides him the desired result. The Artist’s process forms and explores; he adds volcanic ash, sand, and ground mica to the paint as he builds, and each finished canvas is between 100 and 200 layers thick. For Jackson, the work is an evolution, not dissimilar to the experience of life. Featured in many private and museum collections. Artist: Title: Size: Value: Opening Bid: Courtesy of: Carl Plansky Abstract 3 57” x 47” $9,500 $5,700 Elder Gallery LIVE AUCTION elegance, and are highly expressive. Much of Plansky’s work borders on abstraction. His paintings evoke the innate tension between stability and movement. Applying paint with large brushes, rags, and a plaster’s trowel, Plansky used brash, voluptuous strokes to build up his paint so that certain areas of his paintings are thickly coated while others are almost bare. Plansky’s paintings revel in pitch-perfect color, compositional The estate of the paintings and drawings created by Carl Plansky have been acquired by Elder Gallery and portions of the collection are beginning to be released and shown around the nation in galleries and museums; a unique opportunity with this initial release of the estate. Contemporary Art Artist: Title: Medium: Size: Value: Opening Bid: Courtesy of the Artist Steve Penley American Flag Mixed, oil on canvas 36” x 60” $10,000 $6,400 LIVE AUCTION Penley is one of the most celebrated artist in America. He is best known for his use of bold and vibrant colors paintings of historical and popular icons, ranging from Winston Churchill, Einstein, George Washington to John F. Kennedy, Jackson Pollock and The Ramones. Abstract and traditional in the same moment, each of his subjects has meanings which are imprinted in the back of our minds. Manipulating these images with his expressionistic brush strokes, Penley brings the viewer into a new way of seeing familiar subjects. Penley studied at the University of Georgia, and the School of Visual Art, New York. Now he resides with his family in Carrollton, Georgia continuing to live his life as a metaphor of country club meeting bohemia halfway. He is known to define his work as R.E.M.’s Michael Stripe once said about their music: “It’s the acceptable edge of the unacceptable.” Artist: Title: Medium: Size: Value: Opening Bid: Courtesy of: Dennis Campay Simple View Point Mixed media on canvas 30” x 20” $7,500 $5,300 Shain Gallery SILENT AUCTION Dennis Campay is a fifty-four year old painter known for his recurrent images of architectural white washed porticoes and weathered steps descending into cool, dark water. Yet his paintings are not memorials to antebellum architecture, nor the south his subject. The South’s best new painter has clearly answered that he can make it outside of his native soil. A Simple View Point depicts an expansion of his work into urbanity. Highly collected by private, museum and corporate collections. Campay was the subject of a one-man show at the High Museum of Art in early 2000, propelling him into the national spotlight. Artist: Title: Medium: Size: Value: Opening Bid: Courtesy of: Tony Hernandez Untitled, 2013 Ink & colored pencil on paper 14” x 11” $2,400 $1,600 Hidell Brooks Gallery SILENT AUCTION Tony Hernandez was born in 1964 in Atlanta where he still resides today. He attended the Art Institute of Atlanta and went on to the Southern College of Technology where he studied Architecture. Tony paints children who are waiting for hope. They are vessels of peace and enlightenment. He paints on birch panel with thin layers of beeswax and damar resin melted together to create a wax medium called encaustic. The word encaustic is derived from a Greek word meaning “to burn in” and has existed for several thousand years. Using a blowtorch, Hernandez fuses this wax medium and oil pigment causing the wax to engulf the pigment and allowing for the addition of more layers of wax. A specific amount of paint is applied to each layer then the heat infiltrates the paint so that the color is suspended in the wax before progressing to the next layer. This meticulous process achieves a deep three-dimensional illusion that the image itself is afloat within the composition. His technique creates the mysterious depth and shadow that he is known for. The San Francisco Museum of Fine Art purchased his work for their permanent collection and the musical group train bought the rights to some of his paintings for their album artwork. Viewing and living with his work stirs many emotions; simple and exquisite. In 2008, the Artist moved to Miami to join its developing art scene, and is widely recognized as being instrumental in shaping Miami’s prestige in the art world. Widely known and exhibited here, Europe and Asia, Legemann’s work picked up the tradition of Picasso, allowing him to expore the rich and exciting environment of highly abstracted figurative sculpture. Perhaps taking his cue from Cubism as he uses hollow metal squares to scupt the human form, strong and delicate at once. Each square represents the trials and tribulations of life. Artist: Title: Medium: Size: Value: Opening Bid: Courtesy of: Arless Day The Family Collection, 1998 Collage on board 13” x 19” $4,200 $2,800 Chris Jensen SILENT AUCTION Arless Day builds the best of all possible worlds in his collage-paintings of pastoral architecture, landscapes and interiors. His work is in public and private collections throughout the United States and internationally in London and New Zealand. Selected collections of Day’s work include the Art in Embassies Program, Washington, D.C., Bank of America, Charlotte, Federal Reserve Bank, Charlotte, Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, Morris Museum of Art, Troutman Sanders, Washington, D. His intrinsic connection to the earth and his surrounding forms a vivid color pallet and a unique cross between figurative and expressionism. Classified as Neo-Expressionist, Slonem uses an abstract platform for his traditional subject matter, developed with gestured brushwork and bold Warholesque repetitive compositions. Fascinated by the manipulation of paint,he works quickly and creates jarring color juxtapositions. The textures achieved by Slonem’s trademark etching, further emphasizes the ethereal nature he bestows upon his beloved subjects. Printemps 2014 is proud to offer Slonem’s work, made possible by the Artist and his gallery of representation New Gallery of Modern Art, newgalleryofmodernart.com. Gestural burshstrokes and a passion for color are characteristic to all of her pieces, ranging from figurative paintings to abstracts. A life-long lover of music, Kate relies on mostly classical compositions to guide her as she builds a painting, layering chords of color over energetic swirls of charcoal and paint. “It’s important to me that my paintings have a subject, despite how nonsubjective some can seem. With my nude paintings, the figure is the vehicle that invites you to discover the true subject: the elemnts - the way it was painted. Her paintings are the result of adding layer upon layer over time to create a rich, compelling narrative. Although the end result is beautiful in its simplicity, each element adds a layer of complexity that becomes apparent only as you take the time to explore it.”; the life of many cities. Upton’s abstract paintings are filled with color and texture. His distinctive compositions reflect strong geometric shapes with a subtle suggestion of a landscape. The canvases glow with multilayers of acrylic paint and concealed reflective textures using silver and gold leaf. “I’ve always maintained that my work is about color and light and their effect on our emotions. My inspiration comes from nature, whose sublime forms and colors and chaotic power shape the ever-changing landscape.
