Louis J. Balas, 83, of Jacksonville, Texas, formerly of Eagle Lake, passed

Mary Summary Dancy McGrew, 90, closed her eyes in peaceful sleep
Tuesday, January 6, 1998.
On June 18,1907, in Colorado County, a beautiful baby girl named Mary
Summary was born to Daniel and Alberta Dancy. She was the tenth of 14
children.
Mary attended school in Vox Populi and confessed to Christ at an early age,
uniting with South Point Baptist Church in Garwood where she was a faithful
member until her demise.
She was united in holy matrimony to Lemmie McGrew in 1926. To this
union, six children were born.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Elvy, Whidly,
Golden, Martin, Ben and Lawrence; three sisters, Myrtle, Georgia and Pearl;
one son, Tommy McGrew; and one daughter, Lillie Pearl Miller.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory five children, Rev. Lemmie
McGrew Jr. and wife, Marian, of Garwood, Marcella Johnson and husband,
Horace, and Leo McGrew of Altair, Ezella Glover and husband, Robert
Charles, of Fort Worth, Wilbert McGrew and wife, Vivian, of Weimar, and
Henry McGrew of Eagle Lake; one brother, Jerry Dancy of Garwood; three
sisters, Sarah Farrow of Garwood, Martha Smith of Houston and Bertha Tatum
of Schulenburg; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great
grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 10, from the South
Point Baptist Church of Garwood with Rev. Obie Rhodes officiating.
Interment followed at Williams Paradise Cemetery in Vox Populi.
Ben Davis Funeral Home in Columbus was in charge of arrangements.
Serving as pallbearers were Rev. Truman Scott Jr.; Ray C. Glover; Ron L.,
Kenneth and Kelvin McGrew; Twaymon L. Boone and Duvard Perdue.
Honorary pallbearers were Rev. Lemmie McGrew Jr., Leo James McGrew,
Wilbert Douglas McGrew, Robert Lee Scott Jr., Truman Scott and Henry
McGrew.

Juan Sauceda, 67, of Eagle Lake, passed away at 11:55 p.m. Saturday,
January 10,1998, at Rice Medical Center in Eagle Lake.
He was born June 24,1930, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, to Francisco
and Dominga Placencia Sauceda.
Sauceda had been an Eagle Lake resident for over 25 years, coming from
Luling.
He was of the Catholic faith and had a career in construction mostof his life.
Survivors include his wife of almost 50 years, Maria E. Salas Sauceda of
Eagle Lake; daughters, Susana Hernandez of Mexico, Martha Hernandez of
Lissie and Patricia Sauceda of Rosenberg; sons, Issac Sauceda of Rio Alto,
California, Beto and Raul Sauceda of Guadalajara, Mexico, Martin and Arestio
Sauceda of Eagle Lake and Jose Sauceda of Michigan; sister, Lupe Sauceda of
Mexico; brother, Francisco Sauceda of Mexico; 23 grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; other relatives and loved ones.
Rosary was recited at 1 p.m. Monday, January 12, from the Chapel of
Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. from
the Eagle Lake Roman Catholic Parish of the Nati vity' s Our Lady of Guadalupe
Sanctuary with Rev. Father Eddie Winkler officiating.
Interment followed at Lakeside Latin Cemetery.

An Eagle Lake landmark will disappear from the scene as the old
McCarty Building, built in 1895 on
the southeast corner of the square, is
torn down soon after the first of the
year...
"Snakecharmer" Colly is what
they call him since he charmed an 11rattle ratdesnake right out of the Gulf
of Mexico last Saturday. It happened
when J.R. Colly and C.W. Springfield were surf fishing at Sargent. Mr.
Springfield said that when he heard
Colly yell, he thought it was their
customary signal of a fish on the line.
Noticing Colly's extraordinary excitement, however, he went to investigate and found a six-foot rattler had
crawled out of the Gulf and under the
chair from which Colly was fishing...
