Weekly Newsletter 24th March 2017 Dear Parents, What a fantastic effort the children made for Red Nose Day today - we’ve raised £48 which will go directly to the Comic Relief charity. Just a reminder about books donations following on from our ‘ten million minutes’ challenge last week - we’d be really grateful for any old books that your child no longer reads to help build up our library. We hope you are looking forward to our Shakespeare performance on Thursday - detailed timings of performances will be sent out separately, but feel free to arrive from 1pm to enjoy tea / coffee and treats from the FAB bakery, as well as an opportunity to view all the children’s Shakespeare topic work in our pop up gallery! Bus pick ups: We’ve had a number of children being collected well past our pick up time, which not only is unfair to our support staff (who are not paid for this time) but we also incur extra costs from the bus company and this impacts on our club bus too. Therefore, the buses will be returning to school at 3.40/4.40 promptly. If you are not there to collect your child, your child will return to school with a member of our staff and they will need to be collected by you from school, where it is safer. Have a lovely weekend, Mrs Vicki Briody Headteacher Mrs Stephanie Savvides-Howell Assistant Headteacher Reception Hello everyone, I hope you have had a lovely week? This week in Reception we have continued to learn our turnip soup recipe. We have been changing the turnip in our own recipes to make it a silly soup. In maths we have been learning about time. We have discussed different events of the day and in which order they happen, as well as how to tell an O’clock time. We have made our own paper plate clocks which will be sent home today as part of the homework. In preparation for making our turnip soup we have been discussing ways to stay safe in the kitchen. We have made super hero kitchen appliances, with a speech bubble for each one telling us how to stay safe. Homework and books are being sent home. A quick note to those who have not brought their books back to school. We are running out of reading books to send home because some have not been returned to us. Please ensure you send back any old books. Have a brilliant weekend and see you all soon. Dates for your diaries Mr. Owens and Jackie Comic Relief Joke Corner What do cows like listening to? We’ve been learning the story of Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairies in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We have been deciding on actions for the story to help us learn it by heart. We’ve also been plotting the story against a ‘story mountain’, thinking about the features of the beginning, middle and end. In maths this week we have been learning to recognise coins and notes and add money together. Please help at home by giving your child real life experiences of handling change. You could look at coins and notes together, talk about what they look like and their values. In our topic work we have been ‘decoding’ text from A Midsummer Night’s Dream line by line, talking about Shakespearian and modern language. We have also been looking at cowslips (which appear throughout) and we we’ve been experimenting with colour mixing before we paint them next week. Year 2 We have had a very busy week in year 2. this week we wrote the whole of our A Midsummer Night’s Dream story– it was the most we’ve ever written and the children did a great job! We are now innovating parts of the story before using the structure to invent our own story based around an argument and a magical spell. In maths this week we have been revising subtraction and looking at time. Children are confident with o’clock but are finding half-past, quarter past and quarter to more difficult. It would be fantastic if you could take opportunities to look at the time over the next few weeks with your child to give them real life experiences of needing to know and read the actual time. We have been working hard to finalise our showcase next week and really look forward to seeing you all on Thursday. Year 3 Hello everyone– another busy week in Year 3. This week in Topic we learned all about the Sphinx of Giza: who made it, why it is so famous, why it is special to Egypt and why it was made. We then used clay to make our own version of the Sphinx. Next week will paint them to make them look even better and more authentic. In English this week we have been inventing our myths inspired by our Egyptian myths and legends. We created story mountains to help us with our writing and thought carefully about what makes a good story. On Tuesday we will complete the final version in Big Write. In Maths we have been learning all about quarter, half, three-quarter and full turns in shapes. As well as looking at rotations both clockwise and anti-clockwise. We have been working hard to finalise our showcase next week and really look forward to seeing you all. FAB Thank you to all our FABulous parents and children for attending movie night last Friday!
