Inspirational Lives
Moderator’s Medal 2013
Church and Society Council
The Moderator’s Medal is a competition open to children
and young people. Now in its second year, the competition
seeks to encourage and reward creativity in responding to or
reflecting on issues relate to faith, belief or religion.
The theme of the competition in 2013 is inspirational lives;
2013 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous
Scottish missionary, explorer and anti-slavery campaigner,
David Livingstone. Livingstone inspired many people to make
positive decisions about their lives because of the strength of
his personal convictions, and that his belief and actions were
selfless and dramatic.
The Moderator’s Medal in 2013 is asking children and young
people to answer the question; which Christian has a life story
which you find inspirational, whose story has made you think or act
in new ways?
• It can be someone famous or simply someone you know
• It can be someone from the past or someone who is still
alive
• It can be because of something they did only once, or
because of a whole lifetime of dedication
Entries are welcome from individuals or groups of up to four
people, and can be in the form of art, video, poetry, dance,
drama or a written essay. Entries should describe a Christian
who has led an inspirational life, and most importantly, show
how the individual or group have been personally inspired to
think or act in a positive way because of the person they have
chosen.
Electronic entries are welcome, please ensure that they are
capable of being opened using standard Microsoft Office
software.
There will be three age groups: 10–13, 14–15 and 16–17. In
group entries (up to four people) all entrants must be from
within the same age group.
In each age category one entry will be named winner and one
entry as runner-up.
Winning entries will receive £100 (if it is a group entry this
prize will be shared equally). Book tokens worth £100 will be
given to the winning entrants’ school or youth club. Winners
will also receive a medal. Runners-up entries will receive a prize
of £25. Winners and runners-up will all receive a certificate
in recognition of their work. Winners will be presented with
their prizes at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland,
which will take place in Edinburgh in May 2013.
The deadline for entries is Friday 15 March 2013. Entries
should be sent to [email protected] or to
Moderator’s Medal, Church and Society Council, The Church of
Scotland, 121 George Street, Edinburgh EH2 4YN.
Due to the large number of entries we regret to say that we
are not able to return any materials.
Any entries, whether they win or not, may be used and
reproduced by the Church of Scotland.
Further publicity and entry forms will be available on the
Church of Scotland website in the autumn of 2013.
