Letterfrom our Board Chair and CEO
Dear Friends,
As our society evolves, the importance of strong communities becomes increasingly
clear. At Berea Children’s Home and Family Services, we know that to create strong
communities we must evolve with the needs of our clients and provide help for the
whole person that will foster their success into the future.
As we have worked the past fiscal year (July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011) to strengthen
children and families, we have also strengthened our service offerings and started
new programs that build upon those we already provide. We’ve begun new residential treatment programming, completed the majority of our current strategic plan and
renewed many of our workforce development programs in Lorain, Lake and Cuyahoga
Counties. Through a grant from the Saint Luke’s Foundation, we’ve also taken a closer
look at ourselves and learned how our partners, our donors and our clients see us. From
what we’ve learned, we are making changes so that our agency is easier to understand,
easier to get services from, and easier to charitably support. Looking towards the future,
we are positioned in a different way than we have ever been in nearly 150 years, and we
couldn’t be more excited.

Legacy
A of Caring
B
erea Children’s Home and Family Services has been serving children and families in need for nearly 150 years.
With a strong foundation based in faith and a legacy of serving children and families in need, we believe in
compassion, hope and the ability of faith to provide strength. Founded in 1864 as an orphanage by German
Methodists, we shifted our focus in 1960 to serving children and youth who need specialized, therapeutic programs.
We were one of the first non-profit organizations to have in-home family treatment and home-based counseling, and
today we serve over 13,000 individuals throughout the state of Ohio. Through behavioral health treatment, out-ofhome care, skill building programs, education opportunities and more, Berea Children’s Home and Family Services
extends beyond the borders of Berea to provide programming and support to children and families throughout
the state. Our experience and expertise in finding comprehensive solutions for families have helped us evolve into
the leading organization dedicated to preserving family relationships and helping to make children, families and
communities stronger.

Making Great
A
s an organization, we have a purpose in everything
we do. Our comprehensive, integrated approach
is aimed at creating long-term solutions for
individuals, families and communities. In the past year
we have continued to expand our capacity throughout
Northeast and Central Ohio. We have also expanded to
meet the changing needs of our referral partners and the
individuals we serve. During the first part of 2011 we
began two new residential treatment programs. One of
these programs treats dual mental health and chemical
dependency problems, as we recognized this as a growing
need among our clients. We also began a new residential
treatment program with the Cuyahoga County Juvenile
Court that has demonstrated an 88% success rate with
those participating in the program. We’ve continued to
partner with local organizations to add additional value and
support to existing programs, such as the Workplace CrossCultural training program, funded by Key Bank, which
helps participants in our workforce development programs
overcome cultural workplace barriers.

values are in sync with the organization, and they routinely go above
and beyond and deliver unparalleled customer service. We value the commitment
of our staff and do everything we can to provide the best working environment
possible. Our employees expressed their positive feelings about our organization
when they helped to rank us as one of the top 20
large work¬places in Northeast Ohio, in The Plain
Dealer’s 2011 Top Workplaces survey. Staff
members cited that they feel our organization
holds strong values and ethics, is headed in
the right direction and they feel they are part
of something meaningful. Our employees
also commented that their managers inspired
confidence, listened to concerns, helped
to make staff member job’s easier and
inspired them to learn and grow.

Future
Looking Towards the
B
erea Children’s Home and Family Services understands that every community and individual is unique
and that their needs are different. Because of this, we will continue to expand our continuum of flexible,
responsive programs, specifically designed to help children, families and communities. As we move into
a new year and begin planning for our next agency strategic plan, some parts of our organization will begin to
change. Programming in new areas, such as education, will help us to address larger community issues, or to
reach individuals in our community who are struggling in ways we have not previously addressed. As we embark
on these endeavors we also recognize the words in our name that once meant so much: Berea Children’s Home
and Family Services, may now not be able to convey all that we do. As a result, some of the names and images
you’ve come to associate with us may change as well. But no matter how much we expand and strengthen our
programs and services, one thing remains the same: we are, and always will be, focused on making a positive,
lasting, measurable difference in the lives of the children, families and communities we serve.

FinancialReport Highlights
Six Independent Audits Confirm Our Accountability
We successfully completed six separate audits. McGladrey and
Pullen LLP completed our overall financial audit, A-133 federal
audit, pension audit and Ohio Department of Job and Family
Services agreed upon procedures. We also had successful audits
of our Ohio Department of Mental Health Services through
the Cuyahoga County Community Mental Health Board and
of our Workforce Investment Act funding through the City of
Cleveland. Our year end net assets totaled $16,640,174.

Making the Most of Every Charitable Dollar We Receive
We are committed to being a good fiscal steward. As a result,
87 cents of every charitable dollar goes directly to our programs.
Through gifts to our annual fund, we raised over $2,378,301 in
contributions that directly supported our ongoing operations.

Endowment Growth Critical to Our Future
This year we added over $283,104 in cash to our permanent
endowment fund. Earnings from this carefully managed fund
allow us to continue to provide our services, regardless of the
decreasing financial support available from government sources
for social services.
Better Business Bureau Seal of Approval
We are proud to be an accredited charity with the Better Business
Bureau for the past four years. We meet all 20 standards for
charitable accountability as a part of four overall criteria, including governance and oversight, measuring effectiveness, finance,
and fundraising.
