We never knew he was driving a car that was the same age as him! Alan was born in his home at Kalamazoo, MI on August 14, 1929. Alan was a dedicated supporter of children’s literacy. His family is asking for donations to be made in his memory to Cesar Chavez Elementary School. He thanked Warren and DorLisa for doing such a fantastic job on the newsletter and also thanked Charlie for doing a good job with our website and roster. Everyone clapped for us. The club is looking for sponsors to go on the back of the Cruise Night t-shirts. That costs $200. Dan mentioned that there was going to be a birthday party on April 6th at La Plancha for the daughter of the owner’s who take such care of the club. He and Ed would like it if members showed up with their old cars (call Ed Baca 310-0381 for details). Dan also announced that there was going to be a car show on May 18 at Santa Fe High School to raise money to send some kids to Washington DC. Leroy stood up and talked about the SEMA Organization and that they send out an email about the auto world and what’s going on. This email talked about Senate Bill 344. Leroy won the free breakfast for March’s meeting. Member profile: Richard and Charlotte Blake: Richard was born on March 8, 1937. Another Pisces! Warren’s birthday is March 7. A friend and former SFVCC member who died last May also had the birthday of March 8- Richard Sandoval. Richard Blake was born in Berkley Springs, West Virginia. He only lived there for 6 years and then his family moved 20 miles away to Martinsburg, West Virginia. He lived there until he graduated from high school. Then he was off to college at RPI in Troy, NY which I googled and found out stood for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute- an engineering school. At RPI he majored in physics. He was in the Navy ROTC and joined the Navy. (My father taught Air Force ROTC at the University of the South when I was a child.) The Navy paid for his undergraduate degree. After graduating he served in the Navy for four years. While in the Navy he worked at the Naval Research Lab in Washington DC and there he became a Racketeer Astronaut. I just love doing these interviews because all of you have led such interesting lives! After leaving the Navy he went to graduate school at the University of Colorado in Bolder and then to the University of Chicago studying in the Astronomy Department and got into the Rocket Astronomy Program. In 1974 he took the Rocket Astronomy Program to Los Alamos and moved there. He did astronomy and physics for 25 years with 19 of them being in Los Alamos. He said that originally it was a fine scientific lab but then the Department of Energy took over and things changed. He moved from Los Alamos to Santa Fe in 1986. Then he moved to Eldorado in 1994. In 2000 he moved to his current house South of Santa Fe. He retired from Los Alamos in 1993 but then worked as a Consultant doing Research and Development Services until 1999 when he retired for good. Richard has been married three times. He said that his first two marriages were fine but there was no legacy. He has no children but he does have a stepson from one of his previous marriages and Charlotte has 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. His stepson’s name is Aaron Sandoski and he creates medical companies. Richard is very impressed with this achievement. Aaron has two children. Richard and Charlotte have been married since July 2011. I asked him how they met. He said at a car club in Albuquerque- the Veteran Motor Club. He joined that club in 2003. They have about 50 members. They have their meetings on the second Thursday of the month. I asked him if Charlotte had any vintage cars. Man has she! Over the years she’s had a 1961 Studebaker Silver Hawk, a 1926 Duisenberg Model A, a 1935 Auburn 850, and a 1936 Cord Westchester. How he can remember all these cars? I have no idea! Today her son that lives in Phoenix owns and drives the Cord and Auburn on a daily basis. It’s so nice keeping the cars in the family. Richard and Charlotte have 8 vintage cars but are buying a new one today, 2/23/13, after our meeting. It’s a 1993 Dodge Dakota pickup from Charlotte’s sister that has owned it since it was new. Their other 8 cars are: a 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix, a 1965 Chrysler New Yorker, a 1966 Cadillac 60 Special, a 1970 Lincoln Mark III, a 1974 Imperial, a 1991 BMW 750, a 1995 T-bird Super Coop, and Charlotte still has her 1961 Studebaker Silver Hawk. I can’t believe how he recited all of their cars and in order from oldest to newest. Richard is quite impressive. I asked him where he kept all his cars and then I remember seeing his 9 car garage when he had the club out to his house. He has been a member of the SFVCC since 1980 which is vintage in itself! Today Richard enjoys collecting rocks, taking photographs, taking care of wild birds, and archeology. He spent 7 years doing a lot of digging at the San Lazaro Pueblo which is a 57 acre site and is about 20 miles from Santa Fe. He has found a zillion things there. Excavation at the site has revealed as many as 5,000 rooms and thousands of items that experts agree are only the tip of the iceberg. The Owner of the pueblo has a museum of artifacts. Once Richard was there digging with the Owner of the Pueblo, and a group of mostly disadvantaged students from Wyoming and they found three kivas! The Owner found one, the students found one, and Richard found one! Every summer they bring up the students from Wyoming and they spend a week or two learning how to work together as a group and in a community. Richard thinks that it’s an excellent program and is happy that the students are paid for their work. Richard’s on facebook. After interviewing him I went to his page. Of course he has an interesting page. Under About Richard it says: Never too old to make more mistakes………… Try to avoid them…… His religious views: discourage nonsense (Which I totally agree with.). Political views: Prefer straight thinkers (Which I agree with too.). Favorite Quotation: Driving down life’s highways, always try to show a little class. And that’s what Richard’s all about- class! Blast from the past: Here's a club member next to his Sunbeam Tiger taken “some” time ago. That’s a V-8 under the hood. I will only give you two hints. He still has his youthful figure and he often drives a truck to meetings that is older than most of our members. Please send new submissions for “Blast from the Past” to [email protected] Seen around town! This old Dodge is up on Mesa Vista street which is off W. Alameda. There are quite a few cars tucked away on the side streets in this area.
