FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Hearst Presents Three Films by Pedro Almodóvar
November 4, 2015: The Hearst Center for the Arts will screen three films by Spanish director
Pedro Almodóvar on Tuesday evenings during the month of November. The series will open
with Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown on Tues., Nov. 10. The 1988 film will be
shown in Mae Latta Hall. Admission is free, and no tickets are required. The Hearst’s film series
is sponsored by Far Reach.
Almodóvar wrote and directed this R-rated black comedy, which stars Carmen Maura and
Antonio Banderas. Maura plays sexy TV actress Pepa Marcos, who is obsessing over her lover
Iván, who has just jilted her over her answering machine. Also among her messages are several
from her neurotic best friend Candela, who wants to take refuge at Pepa’s apartment after
discovering that her lover is a terrorist. Banderas plays Iván’s son Carlos, who arrives to look at
Pepa’s penthouse, unaware of her relationship with his father.
Critic Pauline Kael called this “one of the jauntiest of all war-of-the-sexes comedies.”
Nominated for 16 Goya Awards and winner of 5, it brought Almodóvar widespread international
attention. It was also nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award as Best
Foreign Language Film, and won awards in that category from both the New York Film Critics
and the National Board of Review.
Next in the Hearst’s series, on Nov. 17, is All About My Mother (R; 1999), in which a young man
tries to discover the identity of his father, which his mother has kept from him. The series will
conclude on Nov. 24 with Bad Education (NC-17; 2004), about two men who first knew each
other at school during the Franco regime and reunite on a film project.
