50 years of public service. (General Marshall was chief of staff of the U.S.
Army in World War II, envoy to China in 1946, and U.S. Secretary of State in
1947-49. Under President Harry S. Truman's direction, he proposed what
became the Marshall Plan for postwar aid to Europe and in 1953 he was
awarded the Nobel Peace Prize). Is seeking a permanent endowment of $9
million for operation of George C. Marshall Library, Museum, and educational
programs. The building, completed in 1964, is situated between Virginia Military Institute, where General Marshall was a cadet, and Washington and Lee
University. The museum section, open to the public, includes Marshall's personal possessions, photographs, cartoons, dippings, flags, an electric map of
allied progress in World War II and various exhibits. The foundation archives
is assembling, indexing, and classifying 2 million papers relating to twentiethcentury U.S. military, political, and diplomatic history to be housed in the library; the collection includes more than 25,000 books and thousands of
documents, periodicals, microfilms, and tape recordings. The library began
functioning as a center for historical studies in 1969. Maintains undergraduate
scholarship program; sponsors special exhibits. Publications: (1) Topics,
