Unit of Study: Poetry- Conventions Conjunctions
Essential Questions:
1. What is a conjunction?
2. How do we use conjunctions in writing?
3. How can you find conjunctions within poetry and other text?

Activity 1Begin a KWL chart and ask the student’s What is a conjunction? How do we use conjections in
writing? How can you find conjunctions within poetry and other texts? Discuss what do the students
already know about this subject. Next help the students come up with some ideas about what they want to
know or learn about conjunctions.

Assessment:
• Level 3- The student will determine what they want to learn about conjunctions.
• Level 2- When given choices, the student will identify what they want to learn about
conjunctions.
• Level 1- The student will acknowledge the KWL chart.
Activity 2Discuss and model the use of the 4 Corners Vocabulary template for the word conjunction.

why they are important.
Assessment:
• Level 3- The student will determine an answer to the question asked about the lesson
vocabulary.
• Level 2- When provided with choices, the student will identify an answer to the question
asked about the lesson vocabulary.
• Level 1- The student will acknowledge the picture of one of the vocabulary words.
Activity 3Next, review what was learned from the previous activities. Play the YouTube video Conjunctions
Junction…Best School House Rock uploaded by Cornholio0 on Sept. 5, 20008 to provide the information
about conjunctions in a visual way. Discuss what was learned from the video.
Assessment:
• Level 3- The student will determine one important idea from the YouTube video about
conjunctions.
• Level 2- When provided with choices, the student will identify one important idea from the
YouTube video about conjunctions.
• Level 1- The student will acknowledge the YouTube video Conjunctions Junction…Best
School House Rock.
Activity 4Then, review what was learned from the previous activities. Create an anchor chart about
conjunctions. Discuss what they are and how they are used. Model combining sentences using
conjunctions. You may want to use the Connection with Conjunctions by [email protected].
Assessment:
• Level 3- The student will determine one important idea for the anchor chart.
• Level 2- When provided with choices, the student will identify one important idea for the
anchor chart.
• Level 1- The student will acknowledge the anchor chart.
Activity 5Finally, it is time for the students to practice combining sentence on their own. Model and create a
few sentences to combine. Work with the students to create their own sentences to combine.
Assessment:
• Level 3- The student will generate one combination sentences using a conjunction.
• Level 2- When provided with choices, the student will complete one combination sentence
which uses a conjunction.

sentences using conjunctions.
• Daily 5 Work-on-Words Station: Students can use personal word wall words or they
can work with the content word wall words (generate, prepositional phrases,
conjunctions) and do the activities from the websites below.
