Jefferson’s Ferry Names Robert E. Caulfield
President and Chief Executive Officer
Setauket, NY…December xx, 2014 …Robert E. Caulfield, CPA has been named President and
Chief Executive Officer of Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community, which opened as
the first not-for-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) on Long Island in 2001.
Mr. Caulfield most recently served as CFO/COO for the organization, a position he has held since
2009, when he joined Jefferson’s Ferry. His appointment was announced by the Jefferson’s Ferry
Board of Directors.

Board of Directors. “In addition to his considerable financial expertise, he has demonstrated an
ability to cultivate outstanding working relationships with all our stakeholders; from financial
institutions to regulatory agencies, to our Board of Directors, residents and staff. Bob’s keen
understanding, advocacy, and perspective on senior issues coupled with his integrity, oversight,
and accountability have contributed to Jefferson’s Ferry’s outstanding and sustained CCRC
ratings.”
More than 300 employees provide services to Jefferson’s Ferry’s over 400 inhabitants -- 62 years
and older – who live in the community’s independent residences, assisted and enhanced
assisted living accommodations and in its skilled nursing unit. Owned by Active Retirement
Community, Inc. and sponsored by Mather Health System, Inc., Jefferson’s Ferry is a financially
robust organization with more than $105 MM in assets and an annual operating and capital
budget of $28MM. Jefferson’s Ferry maintains an average occupancy of 93%, which exceeds the
industry average.
In October 2014, Mr. Caulfield was named Top CFO of the Year (not for profit category) by Long
Island Business News, Long Island’s business weekly. During his tenure as CFO/COO, Mr.
Caulfield had oversight of the many components integral to running a CCRC: Operational,
Strategic Planning, Board Relations, Finance, Resident Relations, External Relations, and Fund
Raising as well as the formulation and implementation of initiatives, corporate policies and
procedures. Jefferson’s Ferry enjoys a BBB bond rating from Standard & Poor’s, a 5-star rating
from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and was named a “Best Of” 2013
nursing home by U.S. News & World Report.
Widely respected in the industry, Mr. Caulfield serves on the Board of Directors of LeadingAge
New York, is a LeadingAge Certified Aging Services Professional (CASP) and an active participant
on the CCRC Cabinet of LeadingAge NY. He has served as co-chair for LeadingAge NY’s
Regulation 140 committee and in that role has made considerable progress in bringing about
changes to investment restrictions. He is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management
Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society
of CPAs and the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Prior to joining Jefferson’s Ferry, Mr. Caulfield was a partner of New Life Management and
Development, Inc., a company that developed and managed retirement communities
throughout the United States. Before that, he was in an executive management position at
another senior living development company. Bob began his professional life as a CPA with six
years at Ernst & Young in its healthcare and real estate division.
