Form • Itisasmall,heartshaped,convexstructurewithroundedcornersandbold decorativemarkingsonbothsides. • Thebullamayhavebeenwornasaneckpendentwithastringputthroughaninternal, cylindricalopeningrunningacrossthetop. Decoration • Theupperareaofthefrontandbackofthebullaarelinkedbydecorativerowsof obliqueandparallellinesandhatchedtriangles. • Thefrontdecorationhasaseriesofrepeatedconcentriccirclesandtriangles formedwithobliquelines,puncheddotsandanlargecentralu-shapedmotifwhich couldrepresentafertilitysymbol. • Thedecorationonthebackisabstractandgeometric;parallellinesare creativelyorderedinobliquetriangularshapesofverticalandhorizontallines. Technique • Theheartshapecoreismadefrommetalandiscoveredwiththin, goldfoilwhich givestheillusionofasolidgoldobject. • Thetechniqueofrepousséwasusedtoapplythemotifstothethingoldsheet. • Dotswerepunchedintothesurfaceofthegoldfromthefront. Function • Bullaeareso-calledaftersimilarobjectswellknownfromclassicalEurope. • Liketheclassicalexamples,itmayhavebeenintendedasanamuletormagicaltalisman providingfertilityorprotectivepowers. • Itsformsuggeststhatitmayhaveoriginallybeensuspendedfromastring,perhapsof perishableleatherorawireofbronzeorgold.
