Mr. Stewart died Wednesday morning, Dec. 26, 2012, in Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation-Masters in Algood. (Pictured: Dillard Stewart) He was born June 18, 1919, in Putnam County, Mr. Stewart was a retired heavy equipment operator in major road construction. When construction began to build Center Hill Dam, he was one of the first men hired and worked there until it was completed. During World War II, he went to Detroit and worked in a factory to repair airplanes damaged in battle. After returning to Tennessee, he had a farm and raised cattle. His family includes a daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine and Gary Leftwich of Cookeville; two grandchildren, Lisa and her husband, Thomas Jones, Stewart and his wife, Melinda Leftwich, all of Cookeville; seven great-grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Jones, Ethan Thomas Jones, Matthew Gary Jones, Emma Catherine Grace Jones, Olivia Caroline Leftwich, Luke McGlasson Leftwich and David Sullivan Leftwich; and a brother and sister-in-law, Lenard and Tina Jones of Dade City, Fla. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Nola Irene Thomas Stewart (who died Aug. 26, 1997); a brother, Coolidge Jones; two sisters, Pearl Maxwell and Aldona Stoll.
