Frederick the Great:
Berlin & Potsdam
Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,
When in the 1740’s Frederick the Great set about transforming Berlin from a small, and
rather shabby town, into a center of culture and the arts, he could hardly have guessed
that, in the 21st century, it would become home to many great museums, stunning
contemporary architecture, and the liveliest of cultural achievements. Staying in the
luxurious, centrally located Regent hotel, we will be able to walk easily from Frederick’s
monuments to the very newest part of this great city.
Returning to the city which I first visited in 1965 and have enjoyed many times since,
I look forward to speaking on site as we visit museums and palaces. A special visit with
a top cultural official, a tour of the art collection of the U.S. Embassy, and a reception at
the home of a distinguished diplomat are also highlights.
Our program includes a day in Potsdam, seeing Frederick’s Sans Souci and his Neues
Palais, as well as time spent in Berlin’s major museums: the Gemäldegalerie and its
amazing Old Masters collection, the Decorative Arts Museum at Schloss Köpenick,
Charlottenburg and its magical bust of Nefertiti. During a free evening there will be
an opportunity to attend a concert in the impressive Philharmonic Hall.
Our stay will follow an optional prelude in Silesia, Poland near the German border. We
will see its landscapes, churches, and museums, all little visited and of high quality—
a journey into an almost forgotten past.
Sincerely,
Olivier Bernier
