Feasibility Study for US 30 / IA 17 Improvements Public Survey Comments April 25, 2015 - June 22, 2015 City of Boone, Iowa and Iowa DOT STP-U-0750(631)--70-08 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? I feel that the intersection on T Ave and highway 30 is very dangerous. I get nervous every time I drive through it. The curve of the In general, I am very happy with the road and am thankful that it is kept up so well, specially in the winter. road along with the heavy traffic seems to affect drivers judgment as they are getting on to highway 30 from T Ave. If it were up to me, I would block it off altogether as there is a very safe and well designed on/off ramp on 17 that is almost right next to it. Raising the speed limits would be nice... since people are already going faster speeds anyway. Also, DO NOT shut down ANY more rail road crossings!!!!!! In the even of an EMERGENCY, we NEED crossings, not fewer!!! I think intersections 7 & 8 should be closed!! People are always pulling out in traffic!! Especially 7, there have been so many fatalities and it is a very busy highway. I am talking about the Erickson curve. My primary travel on 17 happens south of 30. some intersections could be eliminated. there needs to be stop light near caseys / walmart in Boone. Traffic is much higher now with these businesses and no changes to road or stop signs, alot of traffic. Accidents at least a few a week on H30 around the boone interchanges. Time to make changes to the road way and traffic control especially since business has grown around the area. Speed limit in Boone along Hwy 30 is too low. Only traffic concerns of Hwy 17 is the volume of traffic. If an overpass is done at the RR, please make a way to at least access the road along the tracks to the east. Even though it would inconvenience me, the gravel roads should not have entrances or exits to/from hwy 30. I use 230 all the time, have seen several accidents, and always use extra caution. I would like to see a safer intersection and somehow tie it into a safer U Ave intersection. With that I mind, U ave should be more controlled during morning and afternoon school days. The extra lane Entering east bound from U was an improvement in some ways. Finally, agricultural vehicles are another prime concern. And this is slightly off topic, but Agriculture in general needs to contribute more in taxes to help cover the costs to roadway damage, roadway improvements, etc. Exit #7 should be eliminated. An entrance/exit in the middle of a "S" curve, on grade, on a slope, in a 65 mph zone should never have been constructed. It also compounds the problems at the RR crossing. There are too many things going on at both of those spots. Do you know the quickest northbound route on Hwy 17 is also the most dangerous? A northbound driver who stays on Hwy 17 has to stop at 2 stop signs before he crosses the railroad, but if instead he exits eastbound on Hwy 30,makes a left hand turn at Exit#7 (against westbound traffic going 65 mph) and goes north on T Ave he has no stop signs and saves several seconds. If he lives. No one knows how to use the turn lanes at the crossing of 30 and snedden. Constant speeding on 30 where the speed drops to 45. The exit at the s curve and the first exit in Boone to the airport are extremely dangerous. The wait times for rail traffic is horrendous. The amount of truck traffic that has to cross into the industrial district warrants a rail crossing in its self not to mention the amount of times a truck gets stuck near hyvee trying to get they the underpass The hard road at the east end of Boone needs to be closed and an overhead needs to be put in for Fareway Trucks! Same with Hwy 17 where it crosses the railroad There is a clear lack of knowledge on how the divided highest is suppose to work on highway 30 around Boone. What about the intersection on 30 before the 1st west ames excit. Snedden Drive and US 30 is very unsafe in winter coming towards 30 from the north going down the hill towards the stop sign. Has black ice all the time and the ditches are super steep I grew up in Boone and spent years in Ames. I currently work in Ames, but live in Bondurant so I don't travel these roadways as much as I have in the past. From past experiences there is something that needs to be done at several of these intersections. I feel as I drive the majority of the problem on hwy 17 is south of hwy30 and the congestion is due to that unadressed problem between hwy 30 and hwy 141. I think the E26/Highway 17 crossing is more of a concern. There is a much higher volume of traffic on E26 in the past 2 years which, in my opinion, makes that intersection more dangerous...especially in inclimate weather. The rr crossing at Quartz Avenue is a real trouble spot. It is blocked often and for long periods of time(over an hour). Semi traffic backs up in both directions. They have no other safe access to the industrial park. It causes truck driver rage(I work in a warehouse and unload trucks). It also causes problems for the businesses as their trucks are not on time. I would like to see the speed limit enforced better on Highway 30 between Story Street intersection and when the speed limit changes to/from 65 mph in both directions. I see "pushy" drivers pretty regularly. Where highway 30 crosses R18 I am very uncomfortable with traffic and exiting and entering and crossing highway 30. It is very dangerous and people often don't stop in the middle before finishing a crossing. The traffic goes very fast and exiting is hard because the exit lanes going east or west are very short. The intersection of Hwy 30 and T Avenue around the curve makes me nervous when traveling 65 mph on Hwy 30. Between Ogden and Boone - the intersection at Seven Oaks. This is a very dangerous intersection - people entering highway 30 and not yielding to the oncoming traffic. Needs evaluation to make it safer!!! Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 1 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? The entry on to highway 30 from u avenue or United Community school is very very dangerous, we are very lucky some of our buses or patrons have not been in a very bad accident . The speed of the traffic is unforgivable, even with the schools lights flashing! It seems this means for traffic to speed up! There has been times when entering 30 to head east, we have a entry lane but I as bus driver seen traffic running three abreast on the three lanes!!! We need a entry lane heading to the west also! I feel that a 4 way stop of some sort is needed for the crossing of HWY 30 and Crown Flair (CDS & Pattersons Dental). Whether it be a stop light or 4-way stop sign. I also feel that a overpass would be very beneficial at T Ave and HWY 17 for the railroad tracks. My kids attend United Community and the bus often gets stopped by trains and then we also get stopped by them as well and the trains out there can take a very long time to get thru. There needs to be an overpass on Quartz Ave. Trains block that intersection everyday. Sometimes for up to an hour and a half. And while that is an extreme, it is blocked daily for 30 minutes at a time. Erickson Curve in the wintertime is awful Maybe put stop lights at Erickson curve also due to semi's trying to pull out into the roadway thinking they have anough room to go but I have to slow down when then pull out You asked about Montana Rd. & US 30, which can be scary..... you SHOULD have asked about US 30 & Moingona Rd, at the bottom of the ski hill, which is access to Old US 30 ...... now, that is even more scary. As to the middle and eastern part of your survey: that is all well planned and well marked; if you have accidents enough to cause a concern, they are not likely a problem with the roads and crossings. Those are fine, for drivers who are not on their phones! Not certain why you are bothering ----------------- except, as I just said, for bad, distracted drivers, the crossings are just fine. And the railroad crossings are only a problem when trains absolutely park across 3 or 4 of them ----- if they only block one, it is easy to pop down to another crossing. No one needs an overpass East of Boone!! That is a phenomenal waste of time and money. (Try spending enough to repair the existing infrastructure ------ wasn't there a report a couple of years ago about how a very, very large number of bridges are rotting, crumbling and heading toward being unsafe? Fix those!! AND REPAIR THE WAGON WHEEL BRIDGE for traffic, using its original, rare design. Closing the Wagon Wheel, and threatening to tear it down, are dastardly attitudes. Bring it back, please. Don't waste money on some railroad overpass --- no drivers are losing their jobs, or losing customers, and no one is dying, because they can't instantly rush across a railroad track. Yikes, get your priorities straight. No Post sign for people to quit traveling in the left lane. And post sign for people to allow merging traffic on to Highway 30. Driving to/from work daily, I have seen and nearly been in several accidents on Hwy 30 in front of Caseys and also at T Ave. I know there have been several fatalities at T Ave. and Hwy 30 and this NEEDS to change!!! Drivers are not waiting to get a clear view of traffic before turning onto the Hwy and/or are not judging speed appropriately! Highway 30 and L Ave. crossing should also be studied as it seems very unsafe. PLEASE, listen when I say the corner of T Avenue and Highway 30 should be shut down. I live in Boone and work in Ames. I travel that area on Hwy 30 twice every day. That corner is the most dangerous thing I've ever seen. I see near accidents at least 23 times every week. I have had to slam on my breaks a few times myself, to avoid missing someone pulling out onto Hwy 30 from there. A couple died there in the last year or so and I came upon that accident as well. It is only a shortcut to get onto Hwy 30 from Hwy 17. PLEASE make it safe by shutting down that corner and having everyone take the bridge and enter onto Hwy 30 via the Hwy 17 bridge. I am so glad you have this survey for us to fill out because my carpool and I constantly complain about that corner. It is so very dangerous. I am adamant about this. Plus that curve along there makes it hard for people to judge when they pull out. Then if they are wanting to go east on Hwy 30, they have to cross both east-bound and west-bound lanes. Thank you for listening to my thoughts on this. Like I said, I see near accidents at least twice a week. Thankfully the other cars traveling on Hwy 30 were paying attention and avoided being hit. But it is only a matter of time someone else is going to get T-boned there. I've never been in accident, but I've come close more than once on Highway 30 at the E41-T Avenue intersection. People pull out in front of traffic all the time. I've literally had to slam on my breaks and have come inches from getting hit by someone pulling out from that intersection. I am always very cautious in that area especially. Highway 30 needs to be a truly 4 lane highway. That 4 way stop at Story street has got to go! I do not go north on 17 from US 30. I work at CDS Global and I feel it would be beneficial to incorporate a stop sign or traffic light when entering and exiting the Boone business park as well as the opposite side. The S curve on highway 30 is TERRIBLE. On highway 17 when you get to Madrid, the posted speed signs go from 35 to 45 and then to 40 at the school zone. I understand the school zone is probably the reason it seems inconsistent/illogical but just felt compelled to comment since my boyfriend can't drive past without complaining about this. I think there should be more speed limit signs posted on the stretch of Hwy 30 when it drops to 45 mph before Story St heading west. Cars often don't slow down. Part of it could be signs aren't posted for 45mph on both lanes. Only on the right side lane making it hard to see if people are in the passing lane. And some just won't obey them anyway. It's also very difficult and unsafe at times to cross over 30 around Crown Flair Dr and S Linn St. Maybe traffic lights or a reduced speed could help in that area. Also the South Linn St is difficult and dangerous at times to get onto 30 from We farm on both sides of hWY 17 Add stoplights at certain intersections on hwy 30 where Caseys General Store is or the at Moffitts Entering and exiting the business park, especially in the morning is very bad. Most drivers do Not abide by the speed limit. there I would like to possibly see a stop light put up in that area. But it definately needs to be patroled more for speeders. It is very definately needs to be more police supervision. dangerous in the morning and afternoon during the week. The reasoning behind saying no to the question about the addition of an overpass is a great concern because of the economic hardship that this improvement would make for the residences along the proposed new overpass / realignment corridor. The potential increase of property tax to pay for this improvement/s would be substantial and very detrimental to all that live in the area. Also the addition of a road (realignment) is a large safety concern. Many residents have younger children and pets along with farm animals. The increase in traffic both cars and semi trucks are a very large concern. The exorbitant cost of this potential project is not directly proportional to the number of residence that would be responsible to absorb these costs. The loss or relocation of any persons homes that are located along or in the potential alignments study area are also of great concern. Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 2 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? On hwy 30 have more police officers patrolling in the am and day for the posted speed of 45 mph cause tons of drivers dont follow that speed. The safety on highway 17 with passing zones and the amount of farmers that drive that road biggest headache is the train tracks on hwy 17. and when linked with harvest season it is horrible. also paving the gilbert cutacross would be nice to bypass and shunt some of the traffic that way. there is already an S curve there and a new bridge over the river. if not, get rid of the S curves as it is allowing people to drive too fast on that road given its gravel status. just my two cents. While stopping on Hwy 17 to wait for trains is sometimes frustrating - I don't know if the expense of constructing an overpass would be worth the money to the taxpayers. What bothers me more is the traffic around the T Ave Railroad crossing and the Co-op. I take the straight shot between the railroad crossing to Hwy 30 and you never know when vehicles are going to pull out in front of you from the coop or the Stop sign where Hwy 17 turns. I'm surprised there aren't more accidents there. leaving my place of work-CDS-after work--too much moving traffic, and low visibility during wet or snowy weather, is very scary. It was okay before, but now we have a couple car dealerships across the highway, we have a new wal-mart, and a new caseys, and the traffic is very scary, and time consuming to cross it. another major problem with the traffic, that concerns safety--is during super nationals-the weekend of labor day, and lasting all the week of the supernationals--and then also due to the start of pufferbilly days--the here in town--the traffic is quadrupled(or so it seems)and very scary, and very hard just to get across the east bound highway, just to get on the west bound highway to head home, not to mention crossing both east and west bound highways, to get to the retail stores on the frontage road. The traffic seems to never go the posted speed limit. This is long time in coming. The curvature of 30 between Boone and Ames in the winter is especially dangerous due to blowing snow when other parts of 30 are clear. I am highly concerned about the addition of an overpass at the expense of any persons homes that are located along or in the potential alignments study area. I am also concerned about the economic hardship that this improvement would make for the residences along the proposed new overpass / realignment corridor. The potential increase of property tax to pay for this improvement/s would be substantial and very detrimental to all that live in the area. The exorbitant cost of this potential project is not directly proportional to the number of residence that would be responsible to absorb these costs. Cars coming from Ames on Hwy 30 are coming at a high rate of speed and often fail to slow down by the time they get to Boone Business Park/frontage road crossing. I've almost got t-boned twice - once there and the other at Linn St. I work at CDS and have to do this twice daily and it is scary. A light would be most welcome. During the winter, trucks need to be out on 17 more often. With the wind, the roads are covered quickly with snow and ice. I have personally witnessed snow plows/sanders lift their blades and just cruise through. If they are traveling ont hat road and have a plow or sand they should use them! An overpass over the railroad is unnecessary and a waste of money that is needed to repair roads and bridges across the state. Useless because you won't do anything, no matter how many studies are done. Enforce the laws about blocking the tracks and the problem is solved!!!!! A stop light or stop sign out by the BOONE business park would be great!! Maybe an other access road for the people who work out in the boone business park. The railroad system going through Boone is by far the biggest headache of my daily commute!!!! ENFORCE the speed limits!!!!! My travel along Hwy 17 is south of Hwy 30 between Luther and Madrid. So, my comments on the section north of Hwy 30 is limited. The question about willingness to wait: As of now, the time it takes to safely enter traffic on Hwy 30 takes about 30 seconds to 2 minutes (waiting for a gap in traffic). Therefore, if you were to build an option that added 30 seconds to 2 minutes to safely enter Hwy 30 - the difference is about the same. Except, your added cost. And, if your option is a stoplight, then it also slows down traffic on Hwy 30... My Point: avoid the added cost of making entry to Hwy 30 safer if it also makes my wait the same as it is now to enter safely...and especially if it forces Hwy 30 to stop and go. Be sure the safety is a real gain, not a percieved gain. People need to slow down. But I know that is something that can't really be controlled very well. I don't know what you have in store for the intersection of Highway 30 and Snedden but that intersectin is not only hard to get through (especially before and after work). But is very DANGEROUS!!! If the concern of T ave off Highway 30 is a big concern. You might consider as a compermise by eliminating left hand turns. I live on T ave . I would be willing to use 17 to go go to Ames but not coming back. It would cause a 6 mile increase on the commute to Ames. Fairway uses that exit for their trucks and it would be a pain for drivers on 17 if they would have to wait for that amount of truck traffic. I know I would hate 17 if Fairway was forced into using the 17 exit off 30. need overpass for Fareway Stores! My major issues are with Hwy 17, south of Hwy 30. The volume of traffic is bad. The frontage road at the Casey's intersection on the north side of Hwy 30 is extremely dangerous! Speeds are excessive on Hwy 30, especially of easterly traffic on Hwy 30 in section of road from E41/T to 230th. In the late afternoon The excessive speeds and traffic volume on Hwy 17 between Madrid and Hwy 30. and early evening it is difficult to enter Hwy 30 from 230th because of vehicle speeds in the 70 mph range coming from the west on the curve. Also, daily vehicle volume and speed correlates with the class schedule at DMACC's Boone campus. In addition to normal rush hour traffic. Please, we beg of you, put in a overpass or viaduct at the RR crossing at the intersection of Hwy 17 and T Ave. I've wasted too much of my life and been late to too many appointments due to trains (often, more than one! sometimes they're not even moving!) at that crossing. The public generally considers hwy 17 south of hwy 30 as a proxy for interstate 35 and travels on it as though it is 4 lanes instead of 2 lanes. Perhaps widening to 4 lanes would solve the problem; i am not necessarily a proponent of that, but it is even less safe than the sections of 30 and 17 i just evaluated. I feel something should be done about it by the DOT. Enforcing of the speed limit seems a fools errand to me; people want to drive differently on it, and they will. Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 3 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? I believe we should keep the four way stop on Hwy 30 into Boone or even add a stop light. The continuing development of the south east Linn and Marshall street areas has created an extremely dangerous entrance and exits on highway 30. We reside south of the city of Boone and use highway 30 extensively for travel. We observe daily, the near misses at the S. Story and S.E. Linn intersections of highway 30. To eliminate potential accidents, it would be advantageous to lower the speed coming from the west on highway 30, add additional caution and/or stop lights, and create turning lanes onto the highway from the side street intersections. na Just wanted to say that I think that it would be great if we could have traffic lights at 190th as well as the T intersection for 17. I drive those daily at least twice and there has been fatalities at 190th as well as the T intersection is hard to see if you are trying to go after the stop sign and someone isn't turning left. That is an accident that has probably already happened. For intersections on highway 30 in the Boone area. I don't like the idea of stop lights on this section, but the intersection of South Linn and 30 may have no other option. Amazingly, the 4 way stop at Story and 30 seems to function well. By far, the intersection I try to avoid is accessing 30 west coming from R27 south. The reduced speed zone at United school is rarely followed and rarely enforced. That is a big driver behavior problem, that needs to be improved. At any of the intersections where traffic is pulling onto the highway can be dangerous because they do not always see car coming. Caution is necessary at all times driving. I know people who have had accidents on many of the intersections listed. I work at CDS Global and it can be very hectic trying to leave our frontage road and cross HWY 30. There have been multiple accidents at this intersection. There is usually a line of cars waiting to cross. It would be amazing if you would be able to put in another four way stop at our intersection. Daily Highway 17 experiences are mostly confined to the stretch between Hwy 30 and Granger. Hwy 30 daily experience is from Duff Ave in Ames to ~Hwy 17 (230th St intersection). we need stop lights at the intersection on hwy 30 My only problem with Highway 17 is southbound commuting traffic in the mornings. It seems Hwy 17 is thought of as the short cut to Des Moines as long as you don't get caught doing 70 on a 55mph highway. Lots of risky passing. no The overpasses of the railroad crossing areas are needed. I believe that as fast as the trains go through many of the crossing areas it should be the responsibility of the Railroad company to help with making the overpasses. My experience is that the flow and weight of traffic is safe. There aren't too many cars and the vast majority go the speed limit. If I go 5 mi/hr over the posted speed limit I am typically passing other drivers. I don't currently understand why there is a safety concern and would need more information to evaluate whether I agree with any such concern. The "S" curve after United is very dangerous with the turning traffic. The intersections into Boone starting at Airport road through Story street are also very dangerous, as most drivers do not drive the posted speed and there is a lot of turning traffic during rush hour. Snow removal is horrible on Hwy 17 and Hwy 30. You can tell when you enter Boone county from either Polk or Story counties just by road conditions. No "Boone County" signs are needed . . . . . Safety on Highway 17 is more compromised south of Highway 30 than north of it in my experiences. Drivers exceeding the speed limit and driving recklessly are more common along the stretches between Granger and Highway 30. Highway 30 itself is generally safe other than during the winter months when some drivers seem incapable of handling icy/snowy conditions. The four way stop in Boone is the only exception, where many drivers seem incapable of remembering right-of-way rules especially when approaching the intersection from the south. I've witnessed several near misses and general delays due to people short stopping in the intersection or having start-stop standoffs when the rules of RoW should make things quick and easy. My biggest concern are the delays from S.Marshall to get onto HWY 30. The intersection by the S.Marshall Casey's tends to cause confusion (3-way stop signs) I have to cross hwy 30 off of crown flair drive daily. It's horrible. People having to drive over across the median of the hwy are use to he road safety rules, but many others are not. They dart in front of your side trying to cut through faster or sometimes just sit the entire time. It's a dangerous cross for people who have to take it everyday! Cars usually pull out in front of me while I go north on 17 over the 30 overpass since it's a big hump Some round abouts would be nice to keep traffic moving along Seldom drive north on 17, usually drive south to Madrid and Granger Most drivers don't know or understand what or how the right of way works at intersections! Putting in roundabouts wouldn't make it better! I commute on Hwy 17 everyday. The drivers using hwy 17 drive way too fast and pass when it is dangerous. It's surprising more people aren't killed on this highway. And the only answer our state legislature and DOT can come up with is to raise the speed limit. I think you get the idea where some of these idiot drivers work. Hwy 30 at Linn St is VERY dangerous, especially since the opening of the new Casey's and WalMart No comments The intersection by moffits/cds is horrible. Too many vehicles entering highway 30 and going the wrong way. My teenage daughters experienced this and it scared me to death. The L Ave and Highway 30 intersection is a death trap. Something should be don there regarding controlled access asap. As the manager of a ag retail location on Hwy 17 a railroad overpass would add greatly to our business The railroad is a significant annoyance. I know that there is a 45mph on 30 outside of Boone but it isnt really observed that well coming from the east going west. I do try to follow it and am passed alot. I dont think it is as important for that speed going from story street heading east because there does not seem to be as much traffic turning onto that going east. But that could be because it is not a feeling of safe going across that many lanes to go east. I use story street to turn to go east or I go to hiway 17 the long way out of town. I will not use snedden drive to turn onto 30 to go east. That is is a death trap waiting to happen. Would like to see hwy 17 become four lanes I dont think we should have all the turns onto hiway 30. Just story st where there is a stop sign. Linn St. is there but you have to cross alot to go east. And the same with the turn from Moffits. That should have only been a turn off from 30 not a way to turn onto 30. The intersection on 30 where 17 joins at a curve is another accident waiting to happen. And accidents have happened. when I am driving on 30 I watch this intersection because the people turning onto it think they can make it but the people on 30 have the right of way. It is better not to have the turn ons to a hiway. It would be better to have the overpass type thing and have joining lanes onto the hiway. may cost more but having all these roads turn onto 30 is hazardous especially if foggy. The speed limit through the Highway 30 section should be lowered. The morning and evening traffic is to heavy at the current speed to safely enter or exit. The 230th and U Ave. interchanges are dangerous. A 55-60 mph. would help with the entrance and exit safety. Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 4 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? The speed limit through the Highway 30 section should be lowered. The morning and evening traffic is to heavy at the current speed to safely enter or exit. The 230th and U Ave. interchanges are dangerous. A 55-60 mph. would help with the entrance and exit safety. The intersection at E-41/T Ave is horrendous both entering and exiting Hwy 30. Very dangerous. I am not sure an overpass over the RR Make sure you drive it yourself at rush hour and after dark to get your impression tracks is worth the environmental impact My biggest concern is the hwy 30/crown flair intersection. The speed limit is posted as 40-45 mph. I feel no one abides by that. Especially people unfamiliar with the area. Very dangerous. When leaving crown flair a lot of times the car on the north side of the hwy will try and cross at the same time as the person on the south side and one or the other may cut the other off. It is also hard to tell if the west bound car is in the right or left lane especially in the winter after dark. I have even experienced a person with out of state plates going west bound actually come to a complete stop on Hwy 30 in the right lane (not the turning lane) to let traffic in the median and the car at SE Marshall cross. Also, Very dangerous at 5 p.m. I feel the intersections of Hwy 30 and Linn Street, Crown Flair Drive, and Snedden are extremely dangerous. Crown Flair and 30 being the worst. On multiple occasions I have had close calls at these locations. The majority of the issues stem from multiple cars waiting in the intersection to cross, inappropriate speeds along Hwy 30 and at Linn Street the cars waiting at the stop signs not paying attention to the traffic turning in from Hwy 30. In front of United Community Schools there needs to be a stoplight for the the buses and patrons! The other option would be for an additional acceleration lane for those entering on to 30 heading west from U Ave. It would benefit the school and the the patrons greatly! At 17 and 190th there needs to be a light or 4 way stop as the vehicles are not stoping, slowing or correctly handling the corner! I have sat there for almost 10 minutes trying to cross!!! The only issues I currently have with Hwy 17 and the intersections are during major town events such as the Farm Progress show, Supernationals etc. I feel they try to take appropriate steps at this time to help divert the traffic by enlisting local law enforcement. I do feel they could possibly help more by giving traffic alternative routes -such as utilitzing other entry points to Hwy 30 so that not all are pushed through at the 4 way stop (Hwy 30 and Story street). The HWY 17 and (T ave.) and Hwy 30 Crossing intersection! some of us locals call it the the Big G curve. The cars coming from the north on HWY 17 have a a hard time stopping there and seeing traffic that is west bound on 30. Many Many Many times I have seen cars run that stop sign or miss judge it. I have almost been hit at least 8 times. One time the young women stopped in the middle of the road, I had to come to a complete stop! My front of my car was very close to her door. I was so close to her I could see what see was wearing and the color of her hair. She had no clue she had stopped in the middle of HWY 30. I was very thankful no one was behind me or she would have been dead along with me also. That incident scared me so bad my knees shook for a long time that day. This intersection has had many accidents and several fatalities. I taught my kids when they started driving to be very careful here and to watch the cars coming up to the stop sign because they don't always stop. I taught my kids when they started driving to be very careful here and to watch the cars coming up to the stop sign because they don't always stop. Thank You Every year for the last several years I have been very close to being involved in several high-speed accidents at the intersection of E 41/Hwy 30 due to traffic entering Hwy 30. I have also had several "close calls" at the T-intersection of Hwy 17 (S Ave) and 210th Street do to the lack of visibility of on coming traffic in conjunction with turning traffic. Most people on hwy 17 travel above the posted speed limit. People who tend to travel at the posted speed are often passed creating a hazard. I drive a government vehicle and travel at the posted speed, I am often passed even when it is not safe to do so. I don't know highway patterns; would raising the speed limit create more or less risk? If there are plans to change the highway 17 and highway 30 interchanges, i would vote against as there are still businesses along those routes that would be impacted by the change in routes. My driveway is where 230th St. goes north off of Hwy 30. That intersection is VERY VERY dangerous. Often times people do not use I also take 210th St. to Quartz Ave every day for work. Often trucks & cars are backed up so far waiting for a train that other correct driving procedures when crossing there. The worst examples are when cars stop on the highway (on on the turning lane on vehicles try to pass. I have often seen near head on accidents here while cars from each direction try to drive around trucks on westbound 30) instead of pulling onto the divided portion of the highway, therefore blocking traffic if you are trying to turn and making it 210th St. that are waiting on the train. impossible to see around them, (semi trucks do this ALL THE TIME and then try to wave you across, I have almost gotten hit there several times because of this. Additionally vehicles that do pull onto the divider between the east and west bound lanes of 30 often block the entire divider, so another car cannot pull off of 30 to turn. This is especially dangerous because there is no turning lane from hwy 30 eastbound to 230th St. Trucks SHOULD NOT be allowed to turn at that intersection, it is very very dangerous, the trucks should have to access Hwy 17 from the on/off ramp and not take the 230th cut off road. My main concern is the uncontrolled intersections on highway 30 at South Story, Linn, Crown Flair and Snedden Dr. Increased traffic has caused numerous accidents. I use some if not all of these intersections on a daily basis and know there is potential for accidents because they are not controlled. I have sat at the intersection of Story St. and highway 30 and watched cars blow through the stop signs at high rates of speed. I believe if it were controlled at the intersections east of Story St. that it would be much safer for everyone. Trying to enter the highway from Lakewood Drive heading west can also be a challenge. While waiting in the median for westbound traffic to clear to head east on highway 30 I have had two incidents where a car coming from Crown Flair Dr. headed east has almost broad sided me trying to enter highway 30. They are looking for eastbound traffic and not paying attention to other cars in the median heading in the opposite direction. Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 5 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? The worst area of the Highway 30 corridor is the "S" curves between Highway 17 and United School. You can have the slightest skiff of snow or ice in the winter and there will be multiple vehicles in the ditch. I don't necessarily think this is bad road design so much as incompetent drivers. Exiting from United Community School on to Highway 30- the DOT has made it much safer for eastbound drivers by providing an acceleration access lane, but exiting from U Ave onto Highway 30 going west is actually just as dangerous. Especially as my route requires getting on in the right lane, accelerating into traffic , but quickly needing to get in the left lane for the left onto the diagonal that cuts to 17. I wait much longer to make a safe right turn than do drivers turning left out of U Ave. Same danger getting onto 30 at the diagonal from 17 and needing to quickly get over for the U Ave left. do not usually try to get on hwy 30 from boone unless from Story St stop---too dangerous!! horrible for parents trying to access United Comm school both in trying to cross roads and waiting for cars to clear to be able to cross. surprised not more accidents there. Traffic especially at 4:30-5:30 picking children up from daycare at United is dangerous. Even trying to access lanes on hwy 30 to get to turning lanes is issue due to traffic numbers and large numbers of trucks. Curves are especially difficult to navigate during winter months-sheer ice. All of the so called come at some cost. To give an honest evaluation you should inform those participating in the survey of the cost of these measures and who gets to pay and how? As a United Community School bus driver, Hwy 30 often seems like a race track during morning and late afternoon commute time. Need to look at the intersection of R18 and Hwy 30. There have been numerous accidents at the intersection. Would love to see stop light or flashing lights at that intersection. The Hwy 17 south road resurfacing several years ago has been great! Much, much better in winter. We are long overdue for an overpass. Highway 17 needs passing lanes desperately too many times people pass carelessly - should have been put in when the road was resurfaced recently. straighten the Erickson Curve - horrible in winter - lots of accidents. also the residence vehicles cross dangerously at the curve often don't stop in the middle for oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes. I spent part of my childhood in Boone, traveling from Cedar Rapids to Boone on a regular basis to see family. I've seen all the changes The road maintenance is excellent. I am always impressed with how good Hwy 30 and 17 are--they are plowed well in winter, no over 50 years. I now live in Kansas City, MO, and travel many times a year to Boone. I stay in Madrid and Ames, sometimes in Des potholes, etc. I feel that safer crossings and BETTER LIGHTING at crossings/Hwy 17 ramps is imperative for better safety. Thank Moines, and I OFTEN use Hwy 30 and 17. Both are basically safe, but both need improvements at intersections. Visibility of the on and you for addressing these issues. off ramps at 30/17 is POOR, especially in bad weather--they need better lighting. It is also incredibly hazardous for people entering Hwy 30 from crossroads north and south of the highway, as they have to cross partway, sometimes wait at the median. This also increases the danger for those traveling 30 east and west. I've seen many accidents--and I don't even live there. Please improve! Hy30 and T intersection should be eliminated!!!! Hwy 17 is very busy East bound north turn lane at montana exit is too short I live on Hwy 17 North of 190th, there is nothing wrong with the road as it is, it is the drivers, 17 & 190th is an intersection where I have seen numerous accidents a recent one fatal, due to the negligence of driver's, talking on cell phone,or texting and people running the stop signs. I would also like you to look at U ave. The train sits there for hours every day. U Ave is a busy road, with United and traffic going to and from. There is not a railroad crossing and sometimes it is hard to see the trains there because of the trees that are growing. Someone is going to get hurt at that intersection. I live by there and you see people flying in front of trains because they don't want the train to stop and then have to back all the way up so that you can get to a place to turn around. I live in Madrid and typically take Hwy 17 and Hwy 30 to Boone, then various streets into and out of Boone depending on destination. I don't take some of the routes that Boone residents take so can't comment on those areas. I am less comfortable getting back on to Hwy 30 from Boone because of the need to make left turns across high speed traffic. It is not a problem some times of day, but other times it seems dangerous. I have commuted along Hwy 17 to Des Moines for work for at least the last 12 years and the volume of traffic has increased significantly and with that the rush and inconsiderateness of drivers. The road needs to be widened to handle the increase in the number of drivers along the road as well as the speed of the drivers commuting in comparison to the farm/local traffic that may drive at a slower more leisurely pace. Make overpass going over only two rail lines instead of 7-8 rail lines! Where Hwy 17 turns east, keep going north with an overpass and pave the gravel roads to Industrial Park New warning signs are now posted on hwy 30 at L Ave., but it seems most recent accidents are result of North or South traffic not stopping at Hwy 30. Why haven't signs been posted on L ave? This is a county problem I understand, but recent accidents show people not stopping at L ave before crossing hwy 30. Better enforcement of 45 limit at Boone Hwy 30 is needed, I still see way too many out of town drivers ignore 45 speed limit. Some near misses at exit at S Linn traffic from Caseys and Walmart At the intersection exchange of Hwy 17 and Hwy 30 and headed South across the overpass. This is the intersection where retail business is going in. This is a very busy intersection right there. A suggestion for turning lanes due to the speed of traffic on Hwy 17 to reduce accidents should be looked at. I feel the need is there. I also think that there should be a lane to speed up going towards Boone from U Ave. This will help with bus safety and with personal safety of people coming to and from the school. It is a very busy intersection. Concerns about the entrance and exiting of vehicles of the new Redeker's Furniture facility south of the Highway #30 & #17 intersection. Highway 30 seems like it should be a higher priority and currently higher risk intersections The crossing on Highway 30 at the bottom of the of the Moingona hill is very unsafe. I see an accident down there a couple of times each year. would probably be less expensive to reprogram GPS so you are not crossing on coming traffic to enter the road way . i know which way i take different paths to make it easier to access road roads and corners depending on which direction i'm going . it is easier for me to go so you don't cross traffic or very little depending the time of travel . i think most accidents occur from people that don't know this or because i know the roads , problems come in when people travel the roads that are less familiar with roads and ease of access on lack the common sense . which direction you are going The U Avenue needs to be controlled during events like concerts and open house. It is scarey trying to get on knowing people might be Safety of the kids is importatn an united going 70mph or faster. Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 6 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? the T avenue /Hwy 30 intersection is unsafe. Many accidents there. Peoples sitting at T ave heading south across 30 seem to have issues with perception of the traffic headed west bound on Hwy 30; distance, speed or even existence. When you travel from Luther area towards Boone on Hwy 17 and you go by the 30 interchange many just zoom onto 17 without checking to see if there is a car in their path. Dangerous part of my route and my teen driver's route. Teen drivers uncomfortable with drivers on their tail as they obey speed limits on 17. Traffic wants to go faster than posted speed limits. How will the existing Hwy 17 be treated? Become county? What about West Central? This could be a drastic change in access for them! I just wanted to mention, I very rarely take HW 17..I find it to be dangerous and unpredictable. I mostly use HW 30 and feel comfortable using it. NO Reduce speed on 30 between 17 and Snedden Dr. RR Crossing delays at Quarts Ave. is very costly for Fareway Stores. The wait time there sometimes is up to around an hour. There is a 30 and Montana RD - Traffic is to fast. Hills obstruct your view when navigating the intersection. 30 at Sneeden Dr is also truck route through town but that is not always the best option either. dangerous when turning off of 30. Traffic is coming from the east over a hill to fast. Loaded semis turning across the west bound lanes of 30, from a stop, have a difficult time crossing safely, depending on traffic volume. E41/T Ave and Hiway 30 intersectionVehicles approaching from the north have a difficult time negotiating traffic speeds and distances when entering Hiway 30. Hwy 17 needs to seriously be looked at for the future. The pure volume of vehicles on this road is not for a two lane road. Over the years the traffic as increase dramatically. Also with the weather conditions in Iowa this road is not safe as a two lane road for the amount of traffic. On Highway 17 at 190th St., I would like to see street lights or a flashing caution light added. When it is slightly foggy, this intersection is very difficult to see. The speed and behavior of the highway 17 traffic is, in my opinion, is very dangerous. Keep the farm equipment off of highway 30. The traffic, at times, is equivelant to interstate traffic and can be very dangerous with the presence of large and slow farm equipment. Why do we not just pave Quartz going north and save a lot of money. It would allow traffic in and out of the ind. park at all times. hly 17 is to rough in places and bridges rough Hly 17 people SPEED atleast 65mphand 30 people speed in 45mph zone and 60 to70 on 2 lane porsons quarts ave. RR crossing is a real pain !!! need a overpass or the other end of the road paved!! T ave. & hwy 30 is very bad. vehicles that cross 30 are at risk of being hit. Also when they turn north from the eastbound lane is bad. i just wanted to point out that trying to get across the RR crossings on hwy 17 and or Quartz Ave is more than difficult, waiting for 30 min to an hour for trains to move is normal. taking farmland out of production for a new road is not the answer for this I have leaved here all my life very few accidents and who cares if you have to wait for a train once in awhile it is a very short wait on 17 or you can go around it 190th and HWY 17 is a bad intersection. People slide thru the stop sign. I find myself slowing down before get to that intersection, to try Need speeding signs posted on Highway 17. I come off of E-18 to drive on HWY 17 to work each day and do not have any speed to watch the ones at the stop sign so don't get hit, but then also have to watch people behind me to avoid accidents. Perhaps a limits posted on Highway 17. My commute is Hwy 17 and continue on T Ave to HWY 30 which I take to work. Vehicles including reduced speed before approach that section would help. But people seem to be driving faster than 55 on the Highway 17 and if they Semi's pass all the time and are far exceeding the speed limit on Hwy 17. Several times the vehicles will pass more that one are, it is harder for them to stop if someone slides through the stop sign. And I'm sure it is hard for the people waiting at the stop sign to car/truck etc at a time and then jump in quickly back to the correct lane because of them meeting another vehicle. I know these judge the speed of those coming on Hwy 17. comments are including Hwy 17 north of 190th St, but when how people drive north of this intersection does effect what can happen at the 190th intersection. I don't very often take HWY 17 down to HWY 30 because of the on ramp to Hwy 30 -- the angle of checking traffic coming for the east to going west is hard for me to see and judge the speed, so I take Hwy 17 & T Ave to HWY 30 to avoid the ramps. With Redekers Furniture store moving I would think the on/off ramps will be busier and hoping that this is also taken into consideration. I am the manager of the Farm Progress Show. This project could lead to an improvement in safety for our traffic, but could also have a negative impact on the event. I would like to have a voice in the Highway 17 discussion. I think its a total waste of money to put an over pass out there it takes good farmland out of production once we loss the farmland to a road we will never get it back seems like there could be some better options I believe an overpass over railroad tracks S Ave (South Hwy 17) and connecting with adjusted alignment to north 17 is most sensible While it may not be apparent the private property north of the Central Expo Site, at least during the farm progress show need the place to locate a railroad overpass as it mimics the overpass on Hwy 169. It seem then the north south Iowa Highways in Boone County current east west mile of Hwy 17 to accommodate traffic in and out of progress show for the three days of event. would have a major safety issue removed with vehicular traffic not needing to use the same right of way as rail traffic. The railroad is a major employer in Boone County and if they ever increase the number of trains the county would be benefited to have 2 places to cross tracks and avoid major crossing delays. Do not put an overpass over the railroad east of town just to re route hwy 17. Bad plan, look at other solutions. Consider the intersections on hwy 30 first. There should be less access roads along Hwy 30 or else lower the speed limit. Most people driving on highway 30 drive nearly 10 mph over the speed limit. I rarely see anyone driving the speed limit. The intersection at 230th street where the United School is located. It seems many people ignore or are oblivious to the speed limit of 55 when school is in session. I do like the acelerate and decelerate lanes that were added a few years ago but, maybe a sign showing the speed that you are actually going vs the speed limit. It seems people are more apt to pay attention when there is a goal. I pick up my child at daycare around 5:30 pm on weeknigts at United. There is usually a heavy volume of traffic and it is difficult to turn right to return to Boone. People are going more than the posted speed limit at night in an hurry to get home. I commute daily from near the T Ave RR crossing, down Hwy 17 to Madrid. My wait times when there is a train are minimal, and there are rarely problems at the crossings. The most troublesome part of my commute would be the behavior of other drivers on Hwy 17 (too fast). Also, the occasional times (3x/mth) that I drop-off or pick-up my children from school (United Comm) would be the 2nd most troublesome part. I couldn't imagine having to deal with that daily, and would suggest a stoplight at that intersection! Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 7 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? There is congestion at the RR tracks during a train crossing. Vehicles have a difficult turning on to Hwy 17 from 210th, especially when traffic is stacked up at the RR crossing. Vehicles will turn right (south) on to T Avenue and then complete a U-turn to get in the Hwy 17 northbound lane. Semi trucks also do this and then back up southbound traffic as well as traffic trying to turn on to Hwy 17 from 210th. Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? I live along Highway 30 near Snedden. In my opinion the traffic coming from the East is going too fast down the hill. In winter coming down the hill and trying to turn south onto Snedden is very dangerous. I have often thought that moving the 45 mph speed zone further to the east would be a tremendous help. Another nuisance to those living along hwy 30 are the truckers who illegally use their engine brake coming down the hill. Lowering the speed limit would have that benefit as well. The window of time to turn onto Highway 30 from Snedden is often very small. It often sounds like a drag race with cars trying to quickly get up to speed to avoid the oncoming traffic. traffic always, always goes 10 or more miles an hour faster than the posted limits. Drivers are in way too much of a hurry when driving, and distracted alot too. People need to learn patience and slow down The 210th-Hwy 17 intersection and 190th-Hwy intersection feel very dangerous. At 210th, it's often difficult to turn east (right) onto 210th because there are vehicles in the straight/left turn lane blocking the view of eastbound traffic. At 190th, traffic often doesn't stop at the stop signs or pull out into traffic on Hwy 17. People often pass on Hwy 17 at or near this intersection, increasing the chances of an accident from someone turning onto Hwy 17 from 190th. This intersection is about the point on Hwy 17 north of the RR tracks where faster cars are passing slower cars, semi trucks, and farm equipment. There appears to be a lot of vehicles exceeding the posted speed limits along US 30 from 17 west to Story Street. The intersection of 30 and R27 seems to be a dangerous intersection with a fatal accident just waiting to happen. If this study includes both US 30 and Hwy 17, why not include Hwy 17 from US 30 south to Madrid? That section of 17 is narrow with deep ditches and a lot of no passing zones. There are areas where it's legal to pass, bu the line of site distance doesn't seem to be adequate at 55mph. Factor in that people are rarely going the posted speed limit, and one would assume that the potential for accidents would increase. Seems like the recent paving project along this segment, while sorely needed, would have been better used to fund a study to make better improvements: wider lanes, usable shoulders, and lower hill crests. I would like more police patrolling Hy 17 And slowing the traffic down and watching unsafe passing and tailgating. I drive to Eagle Grove to visit my children about once a month and set my cruise control at 57 and have cars tailgating me to try to make me go faster and sometimes making unsafe pass because most think it is not patrolled and they can go 75 or more with no chance of being stopped. No overpasses are needed anywhere near Highway 17, nor anywhere outside of City limits. Our rural/County traffic is fine, thank you. We don't know why the City of Boone seems to think that it has rights, or any reason to be interested, in the land and people outside of its limits. We respectfully ask them to keep their noses out of our business. If they want an overpass, put it in the City. If they want more industry, they have lots and lots of open land inside the limits. They do NOT have to destroy the rural land on the edges of their city. The only, ONLY thing I know from my years interacting with Highways 30 & 17 is that the only accidents are caused by inattentive, or overly aggressive, or just plain stupid drivers. When the Erickson curve is particularly icy, and idiots don't slow down, accidents are not the fault of the roadway. When someone darts out of any of the crossroads along 30 without looking, it is not the fault of the roadway. I really, really would challenge you to research all of the accidents in the past 5 years and pinpoint a problem in the roadway, rather than driver FAILURE. Oh, and a stupid overpass at 17 & 30 (or CR T and 30) wouldn't be for safety..... just to stop the whining of a few people. Of course, it depends on HOW you ask a question: "do you see a need for a billion dollar tax supported overpass?", or, "does having to wait for a train bother you?" --- you can get the answer you want just by HOW you posed the question! But I can promise you, there is no NEED for an overpass. Highway 17 at 210th is a disaster that I am surprised has not happened yet. North bound drivers typically almost always pull out in front of through traffic on 210th st. either direction. It is as if they think everyone turns there and if you don't you are the one in the wrong for driving through. Events are few and far between, but at least that traffic tends to have more respect for the intersection. Truck traffic trying to turn east bound from T ave onto highway 30 or northbound from West 30 should be stopped. It does not make sense for the few seconds of time they save in route compared to the danger of crossing 65+mph traffic. Any vehicles crossing there is just suicidal. I have worked around that intersection for several years now and it still amazes me the number of times per day horns are blown there over close calls compared to the actual number of accidents. Trucks are slow in crossing and cars and pickups act like racers. The train crossing desperately needs addressing as well since you haven't even asked about Quartz rd. When trucks are backed up onto 210th st. waiting to cross there in insane. They wait on the road and can make it less than 1 lane for sometimes 30 minutes due to the train yard. That crossing should be closed and add an overpass anywhere east of town and add pavement back to the industrial park and to north 17. The intersections along 30 near Boone at least have the benefit of lower speed limits, however, the extra traffic at the intersection for Casey's and Walmart has that intersection in need of other controls. Especially during race events, there are far too many close calls for nothing to be done there. Either slow traffic on 30 more or add 4 way stop as well. The side street immediately off 30 has more issues as well. It causes traffic to back up due to the 3 way stop and some don't seem to be aware of how it works there. The turn-lanes within the corridor have helped traffic flow. The area west of Ogden has also seen an increase in traffic and needs improvement. An additional traffic lane to U.S. 30 along with turning lanes west of Ogden would increase safety. The intersection at the S curve on Hwy 30 is the worst. 2nd worst is the intersection of Hwy 30 and Moffitts/Patterson. I generally travel from Luther south on 17. I don't think this survey applies to my use of 17. I believe 65 is a very safe speed for hwy 30. The speed limit for 17 could be raised to 60 for hwy 17 as people are driving that now. Unsafe drivers passing on highway 17 is always a concern. People get inpatient and pass when it isn't clear or even in no passing zones. Many intersections need light/ or some kind of notification that the a person driving has the inclination that someone could be pulling onto highway 30. Especially when it is foggy. I've driven the route from Ames to Carroll area every week or every other week for the past 8 years, and prior to that once a month. The problems I've encountered to do not involve the intersections, but the capacity and safety of U.S. 30 as a whole. The corridor needs more driving lanes or at the very least added turning lanes at intersections to allow for the smoother flow of traffic. The increased number of vehicles on the road has increased the potential for more accidents to happen. Thank you for providing the opportunity to give input - that's incredibly kind! This land, including the roads and bridges, needs to be returned to private ownership so we can operate transportation in the area more This land, including the roads and bridges, needs to be returned to private ownership so we can operate transportation in the area safely and economically. We need to get government out of the transportation industry entirely. more safely and economically. We need to get government out of the transportation industry entirely. My husband did have an accident on Hwy 30 and Montana last year. The other driver turned south onto Montana while my husband was going east. The driver said he did not see my husband due to limited visibility. My husband slows down at that intersection now and can see how a accident could happen if both parties are not fully paying attention. Making Highway 17 Four lane from Hwy 30 to Hwy 141. With farm equipment and amount of traffic it makes traveling very challenging. Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 8 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? 90 degree jogs with cross traffic and railroad crossing on highway 17 creates hazards, costs money and time. Suggest moving jog to Suggest 45 mph on highway 30 and 4-way stop at Snedden. north with curves and then bridge over railroad. 45 MPH East of Story in Boone on 30 seems painful, but probably a good idea. Southbound 17 to WB30 and EB30 to NB 17, I always turn at the at grade intersection east of the 17 ramp, though it is kind of a goofy intersection. Leaving United School to go EB on 30 scares the crap out of me. I think that is the worst intersection of any in your survey. Another one that bothers me is E29(?) at Hiway 17 north of Jordan. Afternoon rush, that is tough to cross 17 or make left turns. I used to commute to Boone on Hwy 17 and rarely had to stop for a train at that intersection. It does help that you could see well in I seriously hate that one intersection on Hwy 30 where the gravel is running basically the same direction. I make my husband take advance if a train was coming and turn off on a gravel to get to the overpass. a different way to avoid it. If you'd like to remove "at-grade" crossings along 30, then close them all. Not just the ones that convenience Ames/Central Iowa people. Then bump the speed up all the way through Ogden. I get the impression you want to close off the HWY 17 intersection. Knowing how much traffic goes along the 30/17 corridor, an interchange would be a great solution. It's frustrating to have to backtrack to the east 1 mile to get onto 17 to head north to Webster City...almost just as annoying as having to backtrack north from 210 to come back to Huxley from Ames along the I-35 corridor (yes, I'm suggesting we need a "north" interchange to Huxley off I-35 :) ). highway 30 is very scary during racing season and ISU football season. We try to avoid the road if possible. Even if it means adding 10 to 20 minutes to my drive People do not drive the speed limit on hwy 30. It is unsafe and dangerous. Thank you for looking into this! I was in an accident last year on Hwy 17 and E26 intersection. I cross Hwy 17 at E26 on my way to work. A work truck was in front of Hwy 30 and T Avenue intersection is very hard to cross if there is any sizeable amount of traffic. me and backed up for some reason. He did damage to the front end of my vehicle. I have not seen the report but he may have been trying to back up for a turning truck or because he was to far in the intersection. Current 45MPH speed limit posted on US30 near Boone, is ridiculous. Better left hand turn lanes are needed at Snedden Road Tendency for US 30 to ice prematurely near Snedden Road Intersection in the protected areas, result in spin outs for west bound intersection and R41 intersection with US 30(on the curve. traffic, east of intersection. Need for better stacking of traffic waiting at IA17 and RR crossing near grain elevator. Slow turning traffic into grain elevator just north of RR crossing. The intersection at T Avenue and Highway 30 always makes me leery as I travel along Highway 30 past that intersection. I've heard several accidents have occurred at that intersection over the years and especially with it being on a curve, it can be hard to cross the highway from T Avenue, especially during periods of heavy traffic. Over pass at airport road t I industrial park would help. UP wastes 1-2 hours of my day daily at quartz The speed limits on us 30 and 17 are perfect. It's just too bad that hardly anyone meets them. More reinforcement is needed, especially 17 could be wider. there are wide shoulders, the lanes could be wider. along the death trap of 17 when the whackos start passing. I'm very uncomfortable with the intersection of Hwy 17 and Hwy 30. Something definitely needs to be addressed for this intersection. There have been too many accidents/deaths in the area. When I travel Hwy 17 it is to go south through Madrid to 141 to DM. I rarely go north as indicated on your questions. With the addition of Casey's and Wal-Mart within the past year, Linn Street and U S 30 intersection is becoming more of a hazard both U S 30 should be divided up into local traffic with traffic controls such as signals and thru traffic that should be allowed to go for those trying to get on and get off of U S 30. without stopping. I don't know if this involves changing the SE Marshall St into ramps off of U S 30 for the local traffic or what. Ultimate answer: raising U S 30 over the Linn Street and Story Street intersections and having long off/frontage ramps. an over pass closer to Boone I think the intersections between Snedden Dr. and S. Story are all dangerous. I hope you will also evaluate some of the at grade intersections west of Ames. The one by Western Edge is very dangerous. I have always thought an overpass at S Ave. over the tracks would allow safe passage for vehicles going North and South on 17. Pave the road on the North side of the tracks East to Hwy. 17. Close the entrance, exit at Hwy.30 T Ave. The Highway 30 and U Avenue intersection becomes more dangerous each year and will continue to as the ISU complex grows. Overpass needed over R.R. at Snedden Drive and Mamie Eisenhower Ave in East Boone! Snedden Drive/30 is possibly the most dangerous intersection around. I have been in two near miss accidents on Hiway 30 involving drivers going the wrong way . Seems to happen there more often than most other roads A nice overpass would help with bottled up traffic and conjestion which would make the road safer. Yes, I have not been in an accident myself, but my daughter was in an vechile that was struck on highway 30. I have witnessed one other accident. And now of at least 3 deceased people from accidents on the road. I had another family member hit on the hwy. The turn at Highway 30 and 230th street is danergous since its on a curve. My driveway entrance is to the north there and way too many cars and semis use that as a short cut to highway 17 and it can be extremely hard to safely access my drive. People have been killed there in the past in accidents There are to many dips and bumps in the roadways Quartz Ave needs an overpass and a wider and extended turn lanes. Hwy 17 needs to be a 4 lane between hwy 30 & hwy 141. And maybe even north to hwy 20. But since 17 kind of jig jags north of As the east side of Boone and the west side of Ames keep merging towards each other ther will probably be even more traffic on Monsanto I'm not sure how that could be done. That might help ease some of the traffic problems on I 35. When I commuted for a few 17. years between Des Moines & Boone for work, the traffic was horrible during peak times. People wanted to speed a bit and were darting in and out and passing when they shouldn't usually due to maybe an older driver or someone on a cell phone going below the speed limit 5 or 10 mph. I have never been in a accident on 17 but have seen some bad ones. Due to the roadway following the natural flow of the land it is sometimes very hard to pass other cars safely. Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 9 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? I know this area well and typically travel in this area on weekends more than weekdays. But when I do travel during the week it is during Glad to know there is a study on this. I've traveled the length of Hwy 30 across Iowa many times and have thought this stretch is commuting time to run errands. During commutes, the traffic is much heavier obviously, but the traffic is faster and the behavior of one of the worst in the state for Hwy 30. I've had an acquaintence killed at 30/230th near United. drivers is worse. The intersections at Hwy 17/E26 and Hwy 30/E41 are the most risky in my opinion due to the traffic volume, speed, and impatience of drivers, and also due to the curve on Hwy 30. No The 4 way stop at Story street allows too many drivers to enter the roadway going the wrong direction. The ability to turn onto 30 or off of 30 at Sneddon is almost impossible if there is much traffic. In my opinion one thing that would make travel safer on 17 and 30 is to eliminate the barrow pits developed that hold water and attract wildlife. The " pond" that is developed by the new Redekers building and the one across the road from there are both way too close to the hwy. 3 ponds within 1 mile of each other. Several on hwy 30 close to Ames and I see dead deer there very often. Do these barrow pits need to be so close to the road? Ericson Curve is very unsafe, I've thankfully avoid accident potential. It's very hard to judge east/west traffic speed because of the curve. 230th Street & Highway 30 needs a turn lane/merge lane for west bound traffic, just like there is for east bound traffic entering highway 30 from the North turning East. Very crucial during peak school hours. I see no need for overpass at Hwy 17 one is much more important to have on. The west side of the town of Boone. Hey 30 and Quill/ corporal Snedden is treacherous! There is alway high volume when I go to cross, doesn't matter what time of day though work traffic is even worse. They monitor speed closer to town but cars do not slow down westbound till after the intersection. As far as East bound traffic, they're speeding up (actually over the speed limit going up the hill. Makes it very hard to cross. The Semi traffic makes it even worse!! The absolutely worst intersection is snedden dr and hwy 30. We try to avoid hwy 17 there are to many blind spots and farm equipment on the road make travel slow and dangerous when others try to pass the farm equipment regardless of the pavement markings. I would really like to see some traffic safety device put in place at the intersection of Hwy 30 and the Boone Business Park. There are over 400 employees alone who work at CDS Global throughout the day/week, plus employees of the other two businesses. It is especially dangerous at night as it's hard to determine the distance of oncoming traffic. It also gets very congested at times in the median as cars are trying to crossover lanes. Thank you! I don't mind waiting on trains as long as I feel safe. I avoid the RR crossing and intersections at T ave and HWY 17. does not feel safe. I would say a huge concern is the variety of traffic. Semi truck and farm equipment is slower and takes up more space, then there are the small impatient cars zooming all around them. That is my biggest frustration and safety concern. Speed is the major concern as Highway 30 approaches Boone from the East. There are clearly marked limits but no one is obeying them. The main problems in the HWY 30 corridor is the the geometry of the S curves near United and the locations of the intersections along those curves. Winter and poor driving conditions add a higher level of risk to already problematic intersections. The Linn-HWY 30 intersection is dangerous also. Travelers have to handle the three way stop while looking for traffic turning on to Linn from both directions of Hwy 30. In regard to a railroad crossing, I feel the best location would be either the entrance to Boone Industrial Park (near Fareway) or on T Avenue (near the elevator). Thank you for evaluating this section of roadway. Geometrical improvements are needed. Intersection at snedden drive and highway 30 are lethal. I have seen accidents and near accidents. It is dangerous to get into traffic at these intersection. The CDS turn off is almost as bad. 7 oaks corner doesn't seem to be as bad. As a 40 year resident near the 30/17 intersection, I feel the 30/17 intersection needs much less attention than the intersections between 17 and Story Street in Boone as well as the intersections east of 17 to U Avenue. Highway 17 is not cleared of snow frequently enough in the winter. I travel down 17 to Hwy 30 5 days a week and have not had any problems in the last 11 years. For those of us that commute and use 17/30/T avenue it would greatly hinder our commute if anything happened to T avenue, ie closed. The RR is a huge issue because they block the tracks between 17 and quartz for prolonged periods of time. The only way to solve If there was a bypass it would still be time consuming to get to the north side of boone just to take a bypass to 30. that would be to get rid of the yards in boone. I live near fareway warehouse/office so i have same issues as the truck drivers. I use T avenue to go from 30 to 17 going TO boone because of less atop signs and faster. 17 at S avenue is dangerous because drivers pull out in front of you I think there needs to be an overpass over the RR on Quartz I take Highway 30 at least twice a day and have to use the Linn Street exit at all hours. During high traffic commutes that intersection is very dangerous and will find myself taking a longer route in town to bypass that intersection. I use the 4 way stop at Highway 30 and Story at least twice a day I don't feel that intersection is as safe as it could be. I watch traffic role through the stop sign or not stop at all. Numerous intersections on Highway 30 are by hills so it is very hard to tell if traffic is coming. I believe the worst is Montana Road as you can't tell if anyone is coming from the west - you just have to guess. I don't travel Highway 17 north very often at all but when I do, I am pretty comfortable. Although I have not been in any accidents on highway 30 or on highway 17 myself, I have witnessed several and have had very near misses myself. One of the worst places for people pulling out in front of a driver is when traveling into Boone and passing the intersection of 210th Street and 17 south. I have people pull out in front of me quite frequently. There needs to be a more definite traffic control device at that intersection as a flashing red light on a stop sign is simply not enough. I think the problem is even worse after dark. Although I live on that end of Boone and frequently travel 210th street, that intersection is a driver's worse nightmare and I try to avoid it all costs! The speed limit as one approaches and goes through Boone is way too low. It seems as if the speed limit is set simply to write traffic tickets. It seems most traffic struggles to stay under 45 mph for that stretch. more traffic law enforcement is needed in the area I avoid Highway 17 at all costs. It is unsafe and it should be at least 4 lanes. And when farm vehicles are active, and during rush hour to Highway 30 is no prize but Highway 17 is a horror (see above) & from the Des Moines area, it is a nightmare. Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 10 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? Need to put in another lane when entering hwy 30 from 230th. So you could turn on and get up to traffic speed before merging when going eastbound. the union pacific railroad in this area is one of the busiest corridors in the u.s. more overpasses would be welcome I think 17 should be evaluated all the way to 141. Improving this corridor would increase safety and spawn economic and suburban growth for all of Boone county. getting out of snedden drive is extremely dangerous. Not much was said about the safety at hwy 30 and R18. Accidents happen there all the time...1-2 times a month is my guess. The intersection of Snedden Dr./Quill Av. and Highway 30 is a disaster. It's an accident not only waiting to happen, it often does. This intersection should be where the DOT focuses on safety revisions. Four-way traffic control signals (stop lights) would not only greatly improve safety here but at intersections west. The lull in traffic stopped at a red light on Highway 30 will allow entering traffic an opportunity for a safer entry at other intersections. AN overpass on 17 is long overdue. The traffic volume for both vehicle and trains has increased significantly over the years and with a T-intersection for 17 right on the south side of the tracks makes it impossible to construct so I would have no idea how to remedy this without major highway relocation. The problem intersection that has many accidents and I feel unsafe at wasn't listed in your survey. It is the intersection of 30/R18. Highway 30 at U is much safer now that there's a right-turn lane for westbound drivers from 30 onto U and an entry lane for drivers turning eastbound from U onto 30. Thank you for both of those! Highway 17 is relatively narrow and doesn't have adequate shoulders in case of the need to pull over; the ditches are too shallow, causing much drifting and icing of snow. I'm glad the rumble-strips have been cut in the center-line, as I find that seems to be helping keep drivers from inadvertently crossing the line. Because of its proximity to the bridge, westbound drivers exiting from 30 onto 17 have difficulty seeing northbound traffic (probably fine for semis and other vehicles that put the driver higher, but not good for sedans). 17 is absolutely ridiculous. Especially in the winter. I rarely take it and often get in trouble from family by commuting on quill Ave and I really don't mind and actually prefer the stop signs at highway 30 and story. Wouldn't mind getting a few more 4 way stops closer then to rose Rd gravel to get to Madrid instead. Cars are constantly riding your bumper on 17. Passing whenever they can (which isn't around town. Sneeden Rd intersection always gets back up. Many times from farmers or semis. It's not rare to sit 3+ minutes at often do is normally at a completely image time) it's a daily occurrence to either need to slam on your brakes, swerve or pay because of that ONE intersection trying to get across. In the winter, the only positive, is the DOT is on the road and salts and sands the small hills drivers have to go down or sit on to get on highway 30 from either side. Pretty scary to think you may roll or slide out onto a car passing unsafely in either lane. Semi's... Have respect for them. But slows commuting traffic down. It's Not uncommon to drive between 40-get passed by a car going well over 80 on that road. There's many times there is a state trooper at Luther. However, they traffic going 65mpg+ need to spicen up their life and sit elsewhere on that road. I believe the T Ave and hwy 30 intersection is very dangerous. Maybe with my proposal below would allow traffic to bypass T Ave from I feel we need an overpass on the east side of Boone. I always thought it would be wise to build it at hwy 17 and 210th Street, RR tracks south to hwy 30. This would allow commuters to use the on ramps at hwy 17 and 30. where you would only go over 3 sets of tracks. You could then proceed north to 190th Street, where you could turn left and get to Industrial Park Road or right to get back on highway 17. This overpass would eliminate any downtime or safety concerns of the railroad tracks at 210th and T Ave. The earlier proposal of an overpass in Boone at East Mamie Eisenhower and Corporal Snedden Drive was a poor idea, since you would have to go over 21 sets of tracks. I feel T Ave intersecting at Hwy 30 is a very dangerous intersection with cross traffic. People pull out in front of you while traveling on Hwy 30 thinking they can make it. You nearly miss them or have to slam on brakes to do so. The worst ones are semi drivers turning to head East. It would be great if 17 was four lane from Boone to 141 due to the volume of traffic. If not four lane, then make a lot of turning lanes, It would be great if 17 was four lane from Boone to 141 due to the volume of traffic. If not four lane, then make a lot of turning both left (center turning lane) and right lanes. lanes, both left (center turning lane) and right lanes. Make sure they are long enough for vehicles to slow down in them in order to not slow down in the main lane of traffic. I think the worst part of hwy 30 is in the winter when vehicles are entering 30 from T ave and dont recognize it slopes away and if its icy If your at the intersection of 30 and U ave. it is hard to see to the west if there are east bound traffic because there is a rise in 30 they slide into the outside lane in front of vehicles. and its close to U ave hiding cars moving at 65 mph My daily commute includes Snedden Drive and Highway 30. Due to heavy traffic and speeding, this intersection is becoming more dangerous. When driving East to Ames at 4:30 PM, I avoid this intersection and go North on Snedden Dr. to Mamie Eisenhower Ave. and then East and South to enter Highway 30 off of Highway 17. Instead of having Hwy 17 jog around like it is, make it a more direct route. The semi's on this road are the ones that make it dangerous. Something needs to be done about the 4 way at Hwy. 30 & South Story St. This is a very dangerous intersection & needs to be fixed. I avoid going thru here if at all possible because most people don't know how to safely navigate a 4 way stop & a lot of people just flat out ignore the stop signs. Would like to see speed limit increases although I doubt that will happen. Also, more policing of highway 30 as you enter Boone and the speed limit drops from 65 to 45. People are always flying past me (while obeying the speed limit) still going 50-65 through this portion of the highway. Makes me a little nervous trying to turn onto the highway from any intersection besides story street. Additionally policing of the school zone, speed limit is 55 when flashing but people don't seem to notice that either and go flying through! It would be a good first step if the police, sheriff and state patrol actually did their jobs and patrolled both highways. (Remainder of comment deleted due to use of expletives and offensive language.) Why did the DOT only paint half of the RR crossing marks at HWY 17 ? Are you coming back to finish the north bound? I'm currently a Boone resident most often commuting west on highway 30. However, I used to be an Ames resident commuting north on highway 17 to Webster City daily. In those days I waited on a lot of trains and often took the shorter route - turning east onto highway 30 from county highway E41 on the commute home. That intersection is a nightmare. I think the danger zone on Hwy 30 is at the Snedden Drive intersection. To much traffic on both roads with to high of speed on why 30. Thw speed zones on hwy 30 are fine if you could take all ro majority of sedden drive traffic to a difference route. my plan would divert Snedden drive traffix ov to why 30 to use the cloverleaf there. Cost efficent for the state and safer for drivers NEED BETTER POLICING OF TRAFFIC ALONG HWY 30 IN 45 MPH ZONES BOTH WAYS TOO MANY OUT OF COUNTY SPEEDERS I HAVE NOTICED DOING ALMOST 60 UP TO STORY WEST AND SNEDDEN EAST Commercial development along the Highway 30 and Highway 17 corridors should be strictly limited to preserve safety. mu biggest complaint is people not stopping for stop signs Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 11 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? The highway 30/17 intersection is very dangerous. Almost just Totaled my car there. Everyone pulls off of 17 and doesn't Realize how fast they are going on 30. Some pushing 75 In that corner. An overpass of some kind would be huge I think for farmers and truck drivers to the East where Hwy 17 turns North again. Ericsson curve as we call it in between United comm school and hwy 17 needs to be closed. Way to many deadly accidents with vehicles getting on and off highway I'm in favor of traffic lights at hwy 30-story st...also at all intersections leading onto the hwy 30... I don't usually cross the railroad track on Highway 17 at any intersection, I drive to Highway17 east from Boone on "old" Highway 30. I I truly wish there would be more law enforcement out on Highway30 closer to Boone where the speed limit drops from 65>55 then think that in my ideal word there would be turning lanes into DeKalb (?) I always seem to get behind the pickup that won't go over from 55>45 I just keep waiting for more fatal accidents when the jackholes don't slow down and still fly into the 45mph zone 40mph from the intersection by Howl-A-Day Inn out to DeKalb... to me it seems like they don't want to get up to the speed limit because going 70... I'd also like to add that I wish there was some sort of warning lights and signage on each side of the "Erickson Curve" they are just going to be slowing down to turn anyway... but that is probably just my own personal pet peeve... indicating that slower speeds are needed when icy... I believe that sometimes people that aren't maybe familiar with the area are unaware that the curve is very hazardous when the rest of the road has been recently cleared or (melted and refrozen) that the pitch of the road makes it extra slippery (?) When trying to enter highway 30 from highway 17, often times semis will STOP in the turning lane (east bound, coming from Boone) and trying to turn onto 30 is impossible. This happens almost daily on my morning commute. The semi drivers want me to go onto 30 yet the semi itself is obstructing my view. People RARELY slow down for the school zone in the morning. I literally smile on the mornings police are out monitoeing that area. I also get stopped at the train on 17 about 7 times per week, out of my 10 times crossing. I leave home early just to get to work on time. And there's no predicting how long it will take. The only way to get to 30 from North Boone without risking hitting a train is to go under the tracks by HyVee and all the way out Mamie Eisenhower, hitting the light and school stop sign by the middle school. And that line is so long sometimes that it takes longer to get through the stop sign than it does waiting on a train. That intersection by casey's is a mess so hard to do anything during lunch hours go from snedden dr to eat every day!!! Please help it Highway 30 should have an increased speed, except for the school zone. It is pretty much a straight shot from Boone to Ames, other than the school zone (which should keep the slow speed!) and the curve into Story County, and a speed higher than 65 is more than reasonable. I can't see the markers now and only know the roads by nicknames. The crossing at industrial park road should be closed. There should All answered above. be an overpass on 17 with a smooth transition jog rather than two turns and a grade crossing. Old 30 still needs to to into 17 somehow, somewhere but I understand that's tricky. The road Eastbout of industrial park needs paved all th way to 17 and tied in for truck traffic. Thanks for considering this. Way better that the plan I saw developed for the city of Boone. Crossing 30 on Snedden drive is trickey at high traffic times. There is not much room for change. Your maint. guys can attest I'm sure. I would suggest thinking about Closing Snedden to large vehicles between new and old 30, forcing Southbound traffic to turn West, and Northbound traffic to turn East. Then East past the hill put in a turnaround, and allow U turns at the next West interchange. I drove this area for thirty years. I have always thought that the intersection on Hwy 30 at Boone, with the exception on South Story have been very unsafe. There should traffic control signals at the Intersection at Industrial Road and Moffit's Ford. Also the same at SE Linn at Casey's and the Boone Speedway entrance. Very poor passing zones on hwy 17 both north and south of boone. Really should add passing zones such as a short section of a third lane to aid in passing safely. Many other states use this method on busy two lane roads to avoid head on collisions. No The intersection at Hwy 30 and Linn Street is one that I am at twice per day and there are near miss accidents almost daily. The school on /off *ramps* are the greatest concern. Thanks for allowing our input. Jason Passing lanes between Hwy 30 and Madrid. Add better passing zones on 17. Too many close calls and all it takes is one driver moving slowly and traffic backs up. That increases the chances other drivers take while passing to avoid being stuck behind slower traffic. I've driven on 17 daily since moving to Iowa and I see near misses all the time. The slow down speed limit between Snedden and S. Story St is stupid and causes accidents One more than one occasion I have seen cars enter onto HWY 30 and head the wrong way against traffic. Fortunately I haven't witnessed or been involved a major crash but know there have been several and know it's just a matter of time until it happens again with the number or access points to the road. I would say that the most dangerous crossing is Hwy 30 & T Ave. Trying to judge speed of traffic & entering on a curve seems much more difficult. It seems drivers going south from 30 on hwy 17 have no regard for the 55mph speed limit but I don't encounter that same situation northbound on hwy 17 from 30 The four way stop in boone is horrible no one understands the rules of a 4 way stop. So many people going out of turn. Then getting on to 30 from the caseys next to walmart sometimes is terrible. All the at grade intersections need to be reviewed. They are very dangerous, especially if there is any growth in the vegetation near any of them! I see alot of distracted drivers on the road especially those using their phones.. Their heads are down, and they are either texting or I wish the turning lanes/ exit lanes could be longer, especially Hiway 30... People are right on your back, and you have to veer over dialing a number. and drastically slow down at a rapid rate. Highway 17 and 210 is very dangerous. I travel on 210th street sometimes 3 times a day and at least once a day someone pulls out from the stop sign in front of me. The intersection at Lyn and 30 is HORRENDOUS! People do not understand the 3 way stop on Lyn and Marshall and then getting onto 30 is a pain if multiple people are turning and/or going straight. It seems like at least 2-3 times a week I hear sirens heading towards that intersection. Please close it off or figure out a way to streamline. It was bad before bit now with increased traffic from Walmart and Casey's, I avoid it at all costs. I think that Hwy 30 and L Ave should have been included in the survey. I think there should be an interchange at Highway 30 and Quill Ave. Many close calls because people have to wait so long they get impatient. A lot of unsafe passing on highway 17 seen lots of accidents on 30 because people feel the need NOT to follow the speed limit. Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 12 Would you like to comment on your answers for any of the previous questions? Is there anything else we should know as we evaluate the safety of Highways 30 and 17? Montana and Hwy 30 intersection is very dangerous, especially morning commute. Vehicles eastbound coming up the hill are exceeding the speed limit and it makes it very dangerous to enter the highway going eastbound from north side of Montana to eastbound Hwy 30. Would love to see limited number of semis use the exit & entrances to Hwy 30 outside of the on/off ramp. Too many of them use the shortcut from Hwy 30 to Hwy 17 northbound that goes towards West Central Coop. The biggest issue I have with Highway 30 is the three main entrance/exits into Boone, SE Marshall, Linn, and S. Story. There are a lot of people coming in and out which isn't necessarily the issue, the issue is with drivers who erratically break because they are gawking at other sites or construction etc., or drivers who aren't obeying the speed limit and feel the need to dart in and out between the often busy traffic of semis, etc. I personally have not been in n accident on either road, but two of my family members have. One on airport road the other at T ave. Both are very dangerous intersections, especially during the winter months. We need a by pass on RR Tracks I think it's worth expanding hwy 17 to a 4 lane highway. Feasibility Study US 30 / IA 17 - Public Survey Comments 13
