On Memorial Day we honor the memory of our beloved dead. In a special way we
remember those who have served in the Armed Forces. Buried at St. Mary
Cemetery is a Medal of Honor soldier of the Civil War. He is John G. Miller whose
act of heroism in the Battle of Gettysburg was capturing the Confederate flag from
the enemy line and returning it to his regiment.

St. Mary Cemetery depends on annual donations for upkeep. Families who own
lots at the cemetery are reminded to help pay for the costs of mowing and
maintenance which this year will come to over $20,000. Your contribution to
St. Mary Cemetery can be put in the collection basket.

There are four opening prayers at the Sunday Eucharist: English - varies from
Sunday to Sunday; Korean - "Merciful Lord, with all our heart, may we adore you and
love all the people truly"; Spanish - This also varies from Sunday to Sunday;
Kanjobal (a Mayan dialect) - "God, our Father, we always follow Jesus. May he
breathe on us his saving Spirit. We pray in his name." The Apostles' Creed is on
page 162 in the Gather Book. At the Greeting of Peace, "Peace be with you" is
added in Hebrew and Arabic as our prayer for peace in the Holy Land. Shalom
aleichem in Hebrew and Asalamu aleikum in Arabic.
The world in which we live is filled with stark contradictions. Our many blessings of
progress exist along side the suffering of countless people living in sub-human
conditions. Wars and insurrections are threatening the balance of peace throughout
the world. The annual Peter's Pence Collection gives us all an opportunity to join
in partnership with the Holy Father to help relieve the suffering of the most
vulnerable. The worldwide Peter's Pence began as a "pence" in 9th century England
when King Alfred collected money from landowners for financial support for the pope.
Envelopes are in the lobby.
Unexplored Treasures in the Lobby: Check out the excellent magazines available
in the lobby. Here are a few articles you can find in them: NCR – A Catholic couple
experience life in an ashram in India, OSV – on Catholic Poland, US Catholic –
“Immaculate Perceptions” on Catholic traditions about Mary, America – Jesuit
Education, Sojourner – a special issue about food and how we get it, St. Anthony –
“In Search of St. Christopher,” ONE – Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Territory.

The practice of torture by the US and other governments is an important moral issue
today. Sister Dianna Ortiz, a survivor of torture by the Guatemalan security forces in
1989, has set up the Torture Abolition and Survivor Support Coalition (TASSC). A
prayer card she has written Jesus, Our Tortured Brother Today is in the lobby.
