The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of Feb- ruary as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history. 2 BLACK HISTORY LITTLE KNOWN FACTS Musician and activist Harry Belafonte originally devised the idea for "We Are the World," a single that he hoped would help raise money for famine relief in Africa. The single became the fastest selling in history, making more than $20 million worldwide. Due to his acclaimed "Banana Boat" song, most people assume Harry Belafonte was born in the Caribbean; in fact, the internationally renowned entertainment icon and human rights activist was born in Harlem, New York. Revenue from musician Nat 'King' Cole's record sales financed a majority of Capitol Records' success during the 1950's so much so, that the distinctive Capitol Records building on in Los Angeles became known as 'the house that Nat built.' Jazz, an African–American musical form born out of the Blues, Ragtime, and marching bands originated in Louisiana during the turn of the 19th century. The word Jazz is a slang term that at one point referred to a sexual act. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on friend Maya Angelou's birthday on April 4th, 1968. Angelou stopped celebrating her birthday for many years afterward, and sent flowers to King's widow every year until Mrs. King's death in 2006. When neurosurgeon Ben Carson was a child, his mother required him to read two library books a week and give her written reports, even though she was barely literate. She would then take the papers and pretend to carefully review them, placing a checkmark at the top of the page showing her approval. The assignments gave Carson his eventual love of reading and learning. Rap artist Chuck D has a bachelor's degree in graphic design. Before lawyer Johnnie Cochran achieved nationwide fame for his role in the O.J. Simpson trial, actor Denzel Washington interviewed Cochran as part of his research for the award-winning film Philadelphia (1993). Martin Luther King, Jr. was stabbed by an African-American woman in 1958 while attending his book signing at Blumstein's department store in Harlem. The next year, King and his wife visited India to study Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence. Thomas Andrew Dorsey was considered the "Father of Gospel Music" for combining sacred words with secular rhythms. His most famous composition, "Take My Hand Precious Lord" was recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson and many others. Before becoming a professional musician, Chuck Berry studied to be a hairdresser. As a child Muhammad Ali was refused an autograph by his idol, boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. When Ali became a prizefighter, he vowed never to deny an autograph request, which he has honored to this day. Louis Armstrong bought his first coronet at the age of 7 with money he borrowed from his employers. He taught himself to play while in a home for juvenile delinquents. After a long career as an actress and singer, Pearl Bailey earned a bachelor's in theology from Georgetown University in 1985. The parents of actress Halle Berry chose their daughter's name from Halle's Department Store, a local landmark in her birthplace of Cleveland, Ohio. Legendary singer James Brown performed in front of a televised audience in Boston the day after Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Brown is often given credit for preventing riots with the performance. After friend and musical partner Tammi Terrell died of a brain tumor, Marvin Gaye left the music industry for two years. During this time, he tried out for the Detroit Lions football team, but didn't make the cut. Instead, he returned to the studio to record his hit single, "What's Goin' On." John Marrant, America's First Black Preacher - 1755 -1791 2 Kingdom Life Worship & Arts Ministry “Kingdom Singers” “King’s Chorus” 3 Our desire is to help people experience the manifest presence of God; to move beyond just having a relationship with God, but also to experience continual fellowship with Him. We want to help people hear and recognize His voice in their hearts through worship. The Worship Arts Ministry exists in order to lead people to experience God “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23-24) through “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs” (Ephesians 5:19-20) using multiple musical styles and various art forms to create a vibrant atmosphere of worship to God. This kind of experience with God is not reserved for the "super"-spiritual. God desires that for all of us. “T he e “Th Ba nd ” c Dan ers ” 3 4 Kingdom Life Ministries Worship & Arts Ministry Dancing was used in ancient times to express joy and thankfulness to the Lord. Praise dance (also known as liturgical dance or worship dance) is a form of worship that seeks to articulate the word and spirit of God through the body. KLM is very proud of our young ladies(Frannki Kay, Alicia Lamar and Garreshia Mivens),who dance under the anointing of the Holy Spirit to deliver a message to the people of God. 4 The King’s Chorus /The Levites ..cultivating the hearts of God people for His word! KLM is blessed to have such an anointed group of worshippers. Psalms 95:1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. Kingdom Life’s MUSIC Ministry 5 Timothy Smalls & Minister John Ayers - Percussionists, Jarvis Jett, pianist-organist, Rodriquez Stuckey, Bassist, and Christopher Floyd, Saxophonist - Saxophone Music is powerful! Music has a definite impact on us in most if not all aspects of our lives. Music can change the mood of a person, act as a carrier for suggestions, and even influence the mind. You can appreciate the power of music by imagining watching your favorite movie without any music whatsoever. Imagine all commercials being void of music. Now imagine coming to church time after time with no musicians! I’m sure you can now appreciate the power and influence that music has. Kingdom Life Ministries is blessed to have some of the world finest “anointed” musicians of all times. During each service we are blessed with anointed music that help us prepare our hearts to enter into praise and worship. These young men, often accompanied by our pastor, play out of their hearts and souls to make sure the will of God is carried out through their music. It is one thing to be gifted, but it is yet another to be anointed to play. The bibles tells us that the “ yoke is destroyed because of the anointing” (Isaiah 10:27). Anointed music travels many avenues during our churches services: Anointed music breaks spiritual bondages (I Samuel 16:23) Anointed music brings spiritual victories - (Hosea 2:15) Anointed music uplifts the defeated spirit - (Isaiah 61:3) Anointed music quickens the prophetic word - (II Kings 3:15) Anointed music brings down the glory of God - (I Samuel 10:5b—6) 2 Chronicles 5:13-14 “ … when the trumpeters and the singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord ……. the house of the Lord was filled with a cloud ……..for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God” When the temple of Solomon was completed, worship began with all types of musical instruments and as the singers sang, God’s glory came down and the priest could not stand in God’s presence. Thank God for Our “ANOINTED” Musicians: Timmy, John, Jarvis, Rodriquez , Chris and Pastor Rowson. 5 6 Spotlight on Kingdom Life Citizens Kimberly Dannika Glover is a single, 19 year old Orangeburg native who is presently a freshman attending Hampton University. He earned a bachelor degree in 2006 and a master degree in 2008 from SCSU. In his spare time, Alvin enjoys helping people, engaging in just about any kind of sports, seeing a good movie, working out, and researching. He has been a part of KLM for approximately 7 years. When asked what he loved about KLM, his reply was LEADERSHIP. He loves how Pastor deals with the word and he enjoys being under him as a Shepherd. Alvin takes pride in being a working member. His work includes, helping as needed with security, filling in by playing the drums, and helping in the sound booth. He is known around KL as the “space filler”! Alvin recalls a most memorable moment at KL, was when Sister Joanna Ayers, assistant to our pastor, complemented him as having a "servant's spirit ". He said he really liked that! Alvin also discovered that Pastor Row- son is quite sociable to the point that anyone can share and candidly sit and have heart to heart talks with him; this is very meaningful to Alvin. Words to the congregation: “As sheep we ought to whole heartedly follow our Shepherd and get on board with the vision of where God is leading our church ". Words to my Pastor: “Keep up the good work and thank you for the opportunity to be able to serve you. Alvin leaves us with a favorite scriptural segment Mark 5 : 1-11 (verse 6 particularly ) ...”but when he saw Jesus was a far off, he fell down and worshipped Him. There was an extraordinary level of excitement among KLM members on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. due to the debut of KDI’s Christian Education Academy. From the preschool aged students to adults over the age of 50, comments were made relative to expressions of happiness about their perspective classes. A continental breakfast, devotion, and orientation occurred before students entered their classes. The focus of all of the lessons was the favor God granted to Joseph for doing good deeds. All of the instructors did an excellent job of keeping students totally engaged using innovative methods. Attendance was outstanding due to a barrage of phone calls during the week leading to Sunday by Superintendent, Dr. Cynthia Sanders and instructors, Claudette Perkins, BJ and Jonathan Evans, Samuel Hinton, Delores Brooks, Deborah Jamison, Virginia Walker, and Cassandra Floyd. There were 92 students in attendance on Sunday along with an offering of $75.67. Special thanks to all instructors and the Christian Education Committee for the hard work and effort on display Sunday morning. Incentives were given to Virginia Walker’s class for having the highest attendance and Jonathan Evans’ class for the highest offering. Thank you Lord for the beginning of many great and exciting Sunday mornings where the Word will be promulgated and souls will be saved, delivered, and set free!!! “SUPER SUNDAY” What better way to describe the first Sunday of each month? SUPER SUNDAY!!! On this first Sunday of January, our Shepherd, Pastor Rowson, blessed us beyond measure!! With the overflow from our annual Watch Night service, we defiantly experienced a “fresh wind.” Topic: “I Hope I Make It!” Scriptures: Romans 5:1-5 and Mark 5: 25-34 Spiritual Nuggets: Hope is the earnest expectation with a desire (Romans 5 and Romans 8). Hope is the catalyst for our faith. If you don’t want ANYTHING, you can’t believe God for ANYTHING! To be Justified- When God looks at you as if you never sin. He sees you by FAITH as if you never did any wrong. Trials and Tribulations are a GOOD sign for believers (Romans 5:3). God is not worried about your situation, but He is waiting on you because He is building the STAMINA in you to TRUST Him at HIS WORD! It’s not ENOUGH to have the EXPERIENCE if you don’t learn the LESSON! You are going to have a REPEAT from 2011 if you didn’t learn the lesson to survive in 2012! STOP living for “CHURCH FOLKS” and live for JESUS! God will leave you in a place, until you learn how to NOT respond! Come and Worship with us at Kingdom Life Ministries-Where There is a WORD for your LIFE! Submitted by Minister Faith Spells Harrison 10 Black Family Pledge Because we have forgotten our ancestors, our children no longer give us honor. Because we have lost the path our ancestors cleared, kneeling in perilous undergrowth, our children cannot find their way. Because we have banished the God of our Ancestors, our children cannot pray. Because we have abandoned our wisdom of mothering and fathering, our befuddled children give birth to children they neither want nor understand. Because we have forgotten how to love, the Adversary is within our gates, and holds us up to the mirror of the world, shouting, “Regard the loveless.” Therefore we pledge to bind ourselves again to one another, To embrace our lowliest, To keep company with our loneliest, To educate our illiterate, To feed our starving, To clothe our ragged, To do all good things, knowing that we are more than keepers of our brothers and sisters. We are our brothers and sisters. In honor of those who toiled and implored God with golden tongues and in gratitude to the Same God who brought us out of hopeless desolation. We make this pledge. - Dr. Maya Angelou Submitted by Sister Cassandra Sally Children and Responsibility 11 Acts 5:29 "We ought to obey God rather than men." One of the most important tasks facing parents is to teach children responsibility. It is essential that children develop self-discipline and judgment necessary to make appropriate decisions. Although some of the self-confidence required to make these decisions comes with age, the majority of it is derived from how situations have been taught in the home. Is your 9-year-old child old enough to stay home alone for one hour after school? Is your 11-year old child old enough to stay home alone for three hours after dark? Is your 8-year-old child old enough to go to the mall with a group of friends? There is no correct answer to any of these questions. Generally the answer will depend upon the situation, the child’s level of responsibility, and the child’s ability to handle problems. In order for children to be ready for various situations, they must be taught emergency procedures, learn to follow rules, follow safety precautions, and be confident of their own abilities. The best way to accomplish this is to teach children in the home. Discuss various emergency situations, i.e., power failure, threatening phone calls, a stranger at the door, who to call in an emergency, people asking for directions, and peer pressure. Assign children household chores so they may learn responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. Allow children to help establish house rules. Encourage children to make productive use of time when they are home alone. Teach children basic first aid and fire safety procedures. Develop open communication so children feel comfortable talking about problems. Submitted by Charlene Stokes When responsibility is given, the recipient must be held accountable. Jesus taught this (Luke 12:47 Matthew 18:23). The one talent man was not punished because he did not do as well as the other two servants. He was punished because he did not do what he had the ability and, therefore, obligation to do. A wise parent recognizes different levels of ability in his children and deals with each accordingly. But a fool fails to hold all equally accountable according to his individual ability. When parents do not make children give answer for their actions they eventually will have rebels with which to deal (I Samuel 2:22-26; 3:13). Parents must be an example in accepting responsibility (Job 19:4; Acts 25:11). Your children will never learn to be a mature, helpful, resourceful and responsible member of any community, if all they ever see is a parent that casts blame elsewhere refusing to accept responsibility miserably chaffing under the consequences of bad choices. Be responsible and your children will grow up to be responsible. Stono, South Carolina, 1739: “Liberty” 11 In a small town twenty miles from Charleston, a group of enslaved Africans meet together and plot their freedom. With their leader, Jemmy, they break into a weapons storehouse and finally gather about seventy to eighty others. Their aim is to march to the Spanish colony of Florida. They march in the open with two drums beating and shouts of “Liberty” piercing the air. For that moment they are no longer slaves, no longer objects of servitude but men—soldiers of liberty. Their step, their voices, their courage all show it. Vincent Harding, The Other American Revolution, 13-14 12 VISION: To increase the Kingdom of God spiritually, educationally, physically, and economically through the inerrant Word of God. MISSION: To walk in Christian love, to strive for the advancement of the Church in knowledge, holiness, and comfort, to promote the prosperity, spirituality, worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrine of the Church, and to support the poor. PURPOSE: To preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, win souls for The Kingdom of God, established believers in the faith, and provide a place of corporate worship, outreach, and evangelism. His Name Is Jesus His name is Jesus-call Him your Savior for support, He entered this world with His Father’s passport, Ever since then He has made the lost His friends, He has saved many and given new life without ends, He’s priceless to all and much more valuable than gold, Accept Him as your Savior, and you too will be mold, He has changed sinners’ lives and redeemed them again, He’ll make your hearts anew and to know Him is all gain, He’ll take the drug addicts and teach them how to preach, He’ll take the liars and show them the right way to teach, He’ll take your burdens and cast them upon His shoulders, He’ll take the homeless from the streets-give them shelters, He’ll love and care for you and make you joint heirs indeed, He’ll make your home one of love and increase your seed, He’ll forgive your many sins and give you a brand new life, He’ll make you rich with blessings from heaven without strife, He’s love, faithfulness, gentleness, joy, kindness, and peace, Your life in Him will always be under His mercy and grace, When you accept Him, His powers can remove any mountain, My dear children come unto Him—He’s your endless fountain. © Jeanette Jenkins FUNNY BONE A Jehovah's Witness knocked on the front door of a home, and heard a faint, high pitched, "Come In". He tried the door and it was locked, so he went around to the back door. He knocked again and heard again the high pitched "Come In". As he entered the kitchen a large, mean, snarling Doberman met him. As he plastered himself against the wall, he called out for help. Again, he heard the "Come In". He slid down the wall to the living room to see a parrot in a cage. He said, "For Pete's sake, is that all you can say --- 'Come In'?" The parrot laughed and said "Sic Him!" LIVE THE RICHNESS Stop focusing your thoughts on wanting things, because whatever you want, by definition, you do not have. Instead, put your thoughts, your energy and your efforts into more fully manifesting and enjoying what you already do have, which is everything. When your thoughts are focused on want, those thoughts build a wall of separation between you and life’s immense abundance. As soon as you let go of the want, you begin to see, to feel and to make positive use of the very real connections between you and whatever you envision. Quit telling yourself you don’t have it, and begin realizing that you can already start to experience it. Look at your most treasure dream not as something you hope to achieve someday, but as something that is already unfolding right now as a result of your actions. Don’t let your highest vision for life become a source of frustration by merely wanting it. Allow it to be a source of inspiration, power, effectiveness and fulfillment by expressing it in whatever you do. The path you are on today is connected to another path, which is connected to another path, and another. You have access to the whole of life’s abundance, and by walking the path, step by step; you experience the beautiful fullness of that abundance. Remove the conditions you’ve placed on life’s richness, and see that it is here for you today. Go ahead, live that richness, and create more and more fulfillment as each moment passes. “I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me” (Philippians 4:13) Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” (John 14:6) Make Him Your Savior Today!
