OUTCOME #4
HOLY
LEADERSHIP
1 Peter 5:1-4
1 Peter 5:1-4 NASB
Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder
and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of
the glory that is to be revealed, 2 shepherd the flock of God
among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but
voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid
gain, but with eagerness; 3 nor yet as lording it over those
allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the
flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive
the unfading crown of glory.
The shepherd’s three tasks
1. Lead
2. Feed
3. Take Heed
OUTCOME #5
HOLY
HUMILITY
1 Peter 5:5-7
1 Peter 5:5-7 NASB
5 You
younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and
all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one
another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO
THE HUMBLE. 6 Therefore humble yourselves under the
mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper
time, 7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares
for you.
Holy Humility
1 Peter 5:5-7
Verse 5:
Toward Elders & Others
Verses 6 and 7:
Toward God
Two-part Definition of “Humility”
Part 1: Honest Assessment of Self
Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of
yourself with sober judgment... Romans 12:3 NIV
The Basis of the Law and the Golden Rule:
“Love your neighbor as yourself”
“Do to others as you would have them do to you”
Humility is an antonym of Pride (I’m more important than you)
Two-part Definition of “Humility”
Part 2: Voluntary Esteem of Others
With humility of mind regard one another as more important than
yourselves… Philippians 2:3 NASB
A deliberate, voluntary choice!
It lifts the other up, but not by knocking yourself down!
Not False Humility!
False Humility
Example 1: Pretending that you believe
that others are better than you, but
secretly knowing that you really are better.
Example 2: Putting yourself down
regarding some ability when you know
that you are actually quite good at it.
Example 3: Being proud of being humble
True Humility
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard
equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself,
taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the
likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He
humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,
even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted
Him…
Philippians 2:5-9 NASB
“Humility is not thinking less of
yourself, but thinking of
yourself less.”
C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
Toward Elders and Others (5)
5 You
younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you,
clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED
TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.
• “Younger men” might be:
•
•
Deacons
Translated “people”
• Subject = obey, follow lead
•
For there is no authority
except from God… Rom 13:1
Toward Elders and Others (5)
5 You
younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you,
clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED
TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.
• Clothe yourselves
•
•
Not a “natural” characteristic
A voluntary, deliberate act
• Toward one another
•
With humility of mind regard one
another as more important than
yourselves… Phil 2:3 NASB
Toward Elders and Others (5)
5 You
younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you,
clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED
TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.
• Proverbs 3:34 - Surely He scorns
the scornful, But gives grace to the
humble. NKJV
• Grace to the humble
•
Not “God helps those who help
themselves” but… God helps those who
humble themselves toward others!
Toward God (6-7)
6 Therefore
humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He
may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your anxiety on Him,
because He cares for you.
• Under God’s mighty hand!
•
•
God is INFINITELY better!
Approach with reverence and fear
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon
and the stars, which You have ordained; What is man that You take
thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him?
Psalms 8:3-4 NASB
Toward God (6-7)

God is INFINITELY better!

Humble yourselves in the presence

James 4:10 NASB
And He began speaking a parable to the invited guests when He
noticed how they had been picking out the places of honor at the
table, saying to them, "When you are invited by someone to a
wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for someone more
distinguished than you may have been invited by him, and he who
invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give your place to this
man,' and then in disgrace you proceed to occupy the last place. "But
when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when
the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, 'Friend,
move up higher'; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are
at the table with you. "For everyone who exalts himself will be
humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.“
Luke 14:7-11 NASB
Toward God (6-7)
6 Therefore
humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He
may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your anxiety on Him,
because He cares for you.
• Casting all your care on Him
•
•
No need to worry about fairness…
Or who gets the glory
• He cares for you
•
Cast your burden upon the LORD and
He will sustain you; He will never allow
the righteous to be shaken. Psalms
