Holy Humility 1 Peter 5:5-7 Verse 5: Toward Elders & Others Verses 6 and 7: Toward God Two-part Definition of “Humility” Part 1: Honest Assessment of Self Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment... Romans 12:3 NIV The Basis of the Law and the Golden Rule: “Love your neighbor as yourself” “Do to others as you would have them do to you” Humility is an antonym of Pride (I’m more important than you) Two-part Definition of “Humility” Part 2: Voluntary Esteem of Others With humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves… Philippians 2:3 NASB A deliberate, voluntary choice! It lifts the other up, but not by knocking yourself down! Not False Humility! False Humility Example 1: Pretending that you believe that others are better than you, but secretly knowing that you really are better. Example 2: Putting yourself down regarding some ability when you know that you are actually quite good at it. Example 3: Being proud of being humble True Humility Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him… Philippians 2:5-9 NASB “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.” C.S. "But when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are at the table with you.
