2. Northwest Passage- a water route through North America to Asia (does not exist)
3. Trading Post-a store in a sparsely settled area where local people can barter
(trade) products for goods

5. Manufactured Goods- things that are manmade such as metal axes and cooking
pots, and weapons
Directions: Use the method, Who? What did he/she do? When? Where? and So
What? to give the importance of each of the following people. The first has been
done for you!
6. Henry Hudson- (Who?) Henry Hudson was an explorer (What did he/she do?)
who was searching for a Northwest Passage (When?) in 1609 (Where) when he came
upon the Delaware Bay. (So What?) He reported his findings to the rulers of
European countries which caused them to send explorers to claim the land for their
own.
7. Cornelius Hendrickson- was a Dutch Explorer from the Netherlands who came to
the Delaware Bay in 1616. The Dutch set up two trading posts to trade with the
Native Americans for beaver furs
8. Peter Minuit- A Dutch man hired by Sweden. In 1636 he bought land from the
Native Americans to set up a colony for the Swedish named New Sweden. It is
located near where Wilmington, DE is today. Swedish colonists and soldiers build
Fort Christina, showing other countries that Sweden had some military power in the
New World
9. Peter Stuyvesant- The leader of the New Netherland. After Johan Rising
captured Fort Casimir, he took his armies and captured the Swedish Fort Christina
in 1655. New Sweden was now a part of New Netherland.
10. Johan Rising- The leader of New Sweden after Johan Printz. In 1654 he was
told to drive the Dutch off the land belonging to New Sweden. He attacked and
captured Fort Casimir (Delaware Bay) which angered the Dutch
11. Johan Printz- A former Swedish soldier who was first named the leader of New
Sweden. He was friendly with the Native Americans and in 1642 he build a
settlement on Tinicum Island and named it New Gothenburg. Life was difficult
because they and to do everything like hunt, fish, clear land and build homes to
survive. Printz went back to Sweden to get more help.

13. What group of people set up the first trading posts in our area? What were the
trading posts used for? The Dutch set up the first trading posts. They were used to
trade with the Native Americans. The Dutch traded manufactured goods such as
axes and cooking pots for furs.
14. Why were animal furs so valuable in Europe? Animal furs were used to make
men’s hats and could be sold for high prices in Europe.
15. Why was Henry Hudson the person responsible for European countries wanting
to come to our area? Why do you think other countries wanted to build colonies in
North America?
Henry Hudson was responsible for European countries wanting to come to our area
because he reported back to Europe about all the resources he found in the area
around the Delaware Bay. The other countries wanted to explore and claim land
and use the resources.
16. How did our area change from the year 1609 to 1655? In 1609 the land was used
by the Native Americans. As more explorers arrived, settlements were built,
resources used, and eventually military forts were built to protect and divide the
land by the countries who claimed the land.
