“The goal of the cow camps is to involve a young audience that has a sincere interest in
learning about dairy cows and the dairy industry,” said McCauley.
Participants were divided into small groups which rotated through numerous stations
including identifying dairy breeds,
practicing showmanship techniques and shooting “Got Milk”

Topping off the event was an

that simulate farm chores with a competitive spirit.
Participants left with a Cow Camp t-shirt, “Got Milk” tote bags
and informational materials provided by the United Dairy Industry of
Michigan, and a better understanding of the dairy industry.
4-H & MMPA Milk Marketing Tour continues tradition of cooperative education
Twenty students gathered in Ovid June 17-18 for the annual 4-H & Michigan Milk Producers Association Milk Marketing Tour.
Highlights of the tour included presentations on milk pricing, how cooperatives work, an overview of the MMPA, a tour of
Michigan Dairy Plant and preparing for a future in the dairy industry.
“The 4-H & MMPA Milk Marketing Tour is our way of giving teens who are looking at dairy-related careers a chance to meet
peers with similar interests,” said Mindy Pratt, of MMPA Member Communications.
At the conclusion of the tour, participants take a quiz over the material presented; the ten people with the highest quiz scores
are invited to an interview at 4-H Dairy Days.
“The top five interviewees earn a trip to the National 4-H Dairy
Conference in Madison, WI, September 27-30,” said Pratt.
This year’s top five are Amanda Carey, Mecosta County; Lynette Jackson, Tuscola County; Amy Juengel, Genesee County;
Garrett Slavik, Gratiot County and Levi Westendorp, Barry County.

Dairy and livestock exhibitors unite in first Michigan Livestock Expo Saleabration
Three 4-H dairy exhibitors were among the 30 showmen selling livestock or dairy products in
the first ever Michigan Livestock Expo Saleabration.
“Its great that the Michigan agriculture community can come together to honor these exhibitors
who have worked very hard to achieve these awards,” said Dr. Joe Domecq, MSU Extension 4-H
dairy youth specialist .
Since dairy animals are not intended for slaughter like livestock, dairy exhibitors sold dairy
products (cheese, milk, and ice cream) to represent the consumable products their animals produce.
The Supreme Champion Dairy Showman, Levi Westendorp of Nashville (pictured top), sold a
block of cheese for $3,300, purchased by the United Dairy Industry of Michigan.
The Supreme Champion, exhibited by Tera Koebel of Three Oaks (pictured center), sold milk for
$4,000 to the Michigan Milk Producers Association.
The Reserve Supreme Champion, exhibited by Lauren Bush of Swartz Creek (pictured bottom), sold ice cream for $3,000 to the Spartan Insurance Agency, Dairy Farmers of America and the
Michigan Farm Bureau.
To show their gratitude, Westendorp, Koebel, and Bush presented their buyers with a gift basket
of assorted dairy products.
