On Wednesday October 7th, the biology 20 students went to
Echo Glen Park in Gibbons to conduct their Ecological Field
Study experiments. Students were divided into groups and
chose either a terrestrial of aquatic biome to investigate.
Within their biome, students took note of the biological and
abiotic factors and took inventory of the different species
within it. Students are currently learning about Ecosystems
and their Diversity as well as Mechanisms of Population
Change.
It was a great day! We once again were fortunate to have
awesome weather conditions and students had a great time
applying what they had been learning in the classroom to the
environment.

A New Storage Space
Redwater School recently
purchased a Sea-Can storage
unit thanks to generous donations from Access Pipelines, Arc Industries and
North West Redwater. The
space will be used to house
items that could no longer be
accommodated inside the
school. Some of the programs and groups that will
make use of the space are
Construction, Football, Phys
Ed
and
Custodial/
Maintenance. Mrs. Dowhaluk’s Senior High Art classes
are planning to paint the Access, Arc and North West logos on the Sea Can before the
snow falls. Stay tuned for
pictures of their completed
art work.
Student Votes 2015
The Grade 9 Social class
were fully involved in
this year’s federal election by running the polls
for Redwater School as
part of the Student Votes
program. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about their
responsibilities as citizens. Full results can be
found at studentvote.ca.

In Science 8, students used a ramp
and a stopwatch to determine the
flow rate of certain household liquids. They timed how long it took
for the liquid to flow down a designated distance on the ramp and
then used the formula distance divided by time to determine the
speed of the liquid’s movement,
called the flow rate. Liquids tested
were water, molasses, corn syrup,
motor oil, rubbing alcohol and
honey.
The senior high boys volleyball team has been off to a great start this year. They have participated in
four tournaments so far (Fort High, Redwater, JPII, and Lac La Biche) Highlights include a top 8 finish
in the 20 team WowPow in Lac La Biche and the silver medal won at JPII as seen in the picture. Keep

up the great
work boys and good luck at your next tournament in Thorhild on November 6 and 7!

From the Trustee:
This month the Board of Trustees had the opportunity to meet with our local MLAs,
Mr. Mark Smith (Shadow Minister of Education), Mr. Glenn Van Dijken (MLA Barrhead-Morinnville-Westlock), Mr. Trevor Horne (MLA Spruce Grove-St. Albert), and
Mr. Colin Piquette (MLA Athabasca-Sturgeon-Redwater). We were able to discuss
the lack of funding for Special Needs, Educational Assistants, Inclusion classrooms,
the disrepair of our schools (putting a band aid on a gaping wound), Transportation
and its funding, and the critical needs of our division. They all seemed interested in
what we had to say and were sympathetic to what the needs of the Division are. Their
response was that they would take the information back and share it with the others.
Obviously, they wouldn’t give us any feedback or a timeline on follow through, but
we as a Board will follow up with them.
Mr. Colin Piquette invited Redwater Schools to let him know if we would like him to
participate in any assemblies, classroom political talks, or awards ceremonies. He
said his biggest interest would be to speak in any of our Social classes, learning about
any parts of government.
The Transportation committee met last week and we were able to surmise that 80%
of Sturgeon School Division parents have already paid the Transportation fees for
this year. We are at 96% of parents that have paid last year’s fees.
The Minister of Education officially released the results of Provincial Achievement
Tests and Diploma Examinations on October 8th, 2015. Student results can be made
available through the school.
Sturgeon School Division is planning a Summit that will focus on empowering students to use Google tools in their everyday learning experience. Each school will be
choosing student reps from grades 3-11 to participate in the Summit, and then be able
to bring back what they’ve learned, to their peers. This will make them leaders of
technology and learning within their own school communities.
Please feel free to contact me with anything that I can bring back to the Board in my
monthly Trustee report. I welcome any suggestions, comments, questions, or concerns.

Israel/Palestine 101
The Social Studies 20 classes
were fortunate to have a live
video-conference with Rabbi
Joel Cohn in Jerusalem. During the two session students
were given a synopsis of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
They really enjoyed the opportunity to speak directly
with an expert on the issue.
Perhaps it will be one of our
students who can come up a
peace agreement in the Middle East?

Giant Floor Map
Page 11
The Canadian Geographical Society visited Redwater School on Thursday, October 22nd with a giant floor map. Redwater
School students from grades five to eleven
took part in a number of hands-on activities centred on the map. The 8 metre by
11 metre floor map was set up in Redwater’s gymnasium and was part of a nationally touring presentation called Energy IQ.
Through interactive activities, the program
teaches students about energy demand,
energy technologies and energy issues
while also learning about Canadian geography.

Our Chemistry 30 students are studying electrochemical cells this week and conducted an investigation to study the chlorine anomaly. Students
prepared a standard purple cabbage indicator solution in order to monitor what reaction would
take place between a sodium chloride and water
solution. Based on what they know, students expected to have to use power to create a reaction
but were surprised to see that chlorine gas, (not
hydrogen!) was being produced at one of the electrodes. The colour change in the solution gave
them confirmation that indeed water was reacting
with the chlorine - this is not an expected reaction... the chlorine anomaly!

In Math 10C, students used clinometers to read angles so that they
could calculate the heights of an objects using trigonometry. They
measured the distance along the ground from the object and used it
to draw a right angled triangle. Then they used the tangent ratio to
determine the heights of objects like the water tower, the flag pole,
the school, trees and light posts.
