This year’s theme is particularly ambitious; for the first time we look at our coast in a global context. Time, tide and tectonics: explores the forces deep within the Earth that have controlled how the rocks formed and how life evolved along the Jurassic Coast. Time: our rocks are 200 million years old and date back to the Lower Jurassic period but their full significance can only be appreciated in a global context. Tides: the moon formed from a mighty collision very early in our Earth’s formation and that governs our tides and the seasons of the year today, 4,500 million years later. Tectonics: the formation of the rocks and the evolution of life is governed by the mighty forces deep within the earth including huge volcanic eruptions that drive climate change and mass extinction. But extinction is life’s great invigorator, the only problem for us is that it takes about 5 million years to happen. We invite you to think about that.
