EMAIL: [email protected] Dr. Nicholas Reeves Nicholas Reeves is currently Residential Scholar in the School of Anthropology at the University of Arizona. A specialist in the history and archaeology of the late Amarna Period, he is the author of "Akhenaten: Egypt's False Prophet," "The Complete Tutankhamun," and several other studies. Dr. Reeves received his PhD from Durham University in 1984 for the thesis “Studies in the Archaeology of the Valley of the Kings.” Since 1984, Reeves has been active in numerous and varied museum and heritage roles, including Curator to the seventh Earl of Carnarvon at Highclere Castle; and most recently, from 2011-14, Lila Acheson Wallace Associate Curator of Egyptian Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. “The Gold Throne” (Carter object no. 91: Cairo JE 62028) is one of the best-known objects from the tomb of Tutankhamun (KV 62). It is also one of the more intriguing, in that several details of the principal scene show evidence of having been altered in antiquity. Dr. Reeves’ presentation will explore the nature of these alterations and assess their significance and meaning. This meeting will be held in the Community Room of the Wilshire building in West L.A. Location and meeting details will be provided in the meeting reminder and on the Events page of the EEO/SC website. 1 Ancient Egypt in the News Art Muir Steps Down as EEO/SC Treasurer and Board Member At the January 2015 Board of Directors meeting, Dr. Art Muir, Jr., announced his retirement from the Board and his post as EEO/SC treasurer. Among his many duties, he created a fascinating roster of speakers and lecture topics each year, arranged travel for them, managed logistics for each event, and skillfully presided over Board of Directors meetings. Beyond his activities for EEO/SC, Art regularly traveled to Egypt to work on excavations, such as Renee Friedman’s digs at Hierakonpolis. Using mathematical skills from his career as an astrophysicist, he developed a formula for calculating the size of ostrich eggs from excavated fragments, ultimately presenting a paper on the subject at an ARCE National Meeting. We thank Art immensely for his years of dedicated service. We will miss his leadership and accounting skills greatly. However, we can all still look forward to seeing Art enjoying our monthly lectures. ****************************** January 3, 2015 -- Archeologists Discover Mythical Tomb of Osiris, God of the Dead, in Egypt Read full article at http://www.ancient-origins.net/news-historyarchaeology/archeologists-discover-mythical-tomb-osiris-god-deadegypt-002525#sthash.NSmWxho5.dpuf (Photo courtesy Ancient-Origins.net) 2 Jean Ford Joins EEO/SC Board of Directors and Accepts Post of Treasurer During the EEO/SC Board of Directors meeting earlier this month, member Jean Ford was elected to the Board and agreed to assume financial duties associated with our operations as treasurer.
