Text:
Algebra and Trigonometry 8th ed, Aufmann and Nation. This book comes
with the required software, WebAssign, and is available at the bookstore.
Prerequisites:
Grade of "C" or better in Math 60 or Math 56 or or eligibility determined
through the math placement process.
Course content:
Chapters 5-8, omitting section 8.4 and 8.6.
Course objectives:
1. Analytically evaluate the six trigonometric functions of angles with
measures that are multiples of 30 degrees and 45 degrees. (SLO)
2. Use trigonometric functions to solve application problems involving
unknown sides of right triangles. (SLO)
3. Analyze, interpret, and solve trigonometric equations. (SLO)
4. Use basic identities to verify other trigonometric identities or to simplify
trigonometric expressions. (SLO)
5. Analyze trigonometric functions and equations numerically, graphically,
and symbolically.
6. Explain and synthesize trigonometric concepts.
7. Interpret and apply graphic, numeric and analytic representations of
complex numbers in trigonometric form.
8. Apply trigonometric functions to application problems and interpret the
results in context.
BASIS FOR EVALUATION:
1. Three in-class tests will be 65% of your grade.
2. Homework/quizzes will be 10% of your grade.

COURSE INFORMATION
Calculators:
You need a graphing calculator to successfully complete this course.
However, calculators that perform symbolic calculations (like the TI-89) and
cell phone calculators are strictly prohibited. I recommend TI-84 Plus.
Homework:
Homework will be done online using Webassign, which is required.
Class work:
I often assign problems that are to be completed in class. Sometimes I collect
the class work and grade it as homework.
Work load:
Most students should spend at least 6 hours per week studying outside of class.
Tutoring:
You can get additional help at the Mathematics learning Center, located in
MC-5.
Make up:
No one may make up tests or quizzes without an institutional excuse or a
doctor’s note. Late homework is accepted with a 10% deduction in your score.
Absences/tardies:
Regular, on-time, attendance is expected and necessary for successful
completion of this course. A student with more than two unexcused
absences/tardies may be withdrawn from class at my discretion.
Withdrawal:
It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from a class. Note that
October 15 is the last day to withdrawal for a grade of "W."
Disabled Students:
If you require accommodations for a disability, please let me know and contact
Disabled Student Programs & Services at extension 2375.
