SYMMETRY Examples of symmetry and asymmetry in art and product design ASYMMETRY IS THE ABSENCE OF, OR A VIOLATION OF, SYMMETRY (THE PROPERTY OF AN OBJECT BEING INVARIANT TO A TRANSFORMATION, SUCH AS REFLECTION). SYMMETRY IS AN IMPORTANT PROPERTY OF BOTH PHYSICAL AND ABSTRACT SYSTEMS AND IT MAY BE DISPLAYED IN PRECISE TERMS OR IN MORE AESTHETIC TERMS. Asymmetry ASYMMETRY ORGANIC FORMS CONTRAST TO MODERN MATERIALS SYMMETRY (FROM GREEK ΣΥΜΜΕΤΡΊΑ SYMMETRIA "AGREEMENT IN DIMENSIONS, DUE PROPORTION, ARRANGEMENT") IN EVERYDAY LANGUAGE REFERS TO A SENSE OF HARMONIOUS AND BEAUTIFUL PROPORTION AND BALANCE . Symmetry SYMMETRICAL PRODUCTS HOW CAN I RELATE THIS TO MY OWN PROJECT Organic forms would be relevant to the function of the object, to grow plants. It would also lend itself to different materials, for example its much easier to sculpt ceramics into organic shapes. This is something I would want to look into, however I'm not sure if we have the facilities to do this at Uni, I may have to look for another local workshop. Yet my recent sketches have a symmetrical theme to them. Mainly because I have been looking into adapting a glass jar, its tempting to design something symmetrical to fit with the form of the glass. A symmetrical design does have some benefits to me, I think it would make the product more subtle in a room, given that symmetrical and simple shaped products are very common. It also fits the mold for a luxury homeware product. brands such as Bang & Olufsen, design products are well finished, neat, bold and usually symmetrical, as you can see in their BEOSOUND range. In conclusion I think I should explore more asymmetric forms but I want to stay a way from wildly organic designs, as the main focus of the product should be the contents.
