Happy Father’s Day \ Father’s Day Breakfast
Book Week contd.
I would like to begin this week’s newsletter article by
wishing all of the fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers
and significant males who help to care for our children
a belated Happy Father’s Day. I hope you had the
opportunity to spend some quality time with your
children on Sunday.
morning tea. I would like to say a big thank you to all
of the parents, grandparents and special friends who
came along and joined us on this day. The weather
was kind to us and we had a large number of people
join us for the day. It was great to see all students and
staff get into the spirit of the day and dress up. It was
great to see parents, grandparents and invited guests
visiting the classrooms and spending time with the
children. The Book Week Parade was once again a
highlight, whereby the children and staff got to show
off their costumes. It was great to see some younger
siblings of the children and parents get into the spirit of
the day by dressing up and joining in the parade.
Last Friday we had our very first Father’s Day
Breakfast. We had an overwhelming response to this
event with over 120 dads or significant males and
about 180 children joining us for a bacon and egg
breakfast. We understand that it can be hard for many
dads to come into the school due to work
commitments, so it was great that so many dads,
grandparents and significant males were able to attend
this event. We were blessed with perfect weather for
the breakfast and it was clear to me that the children
really cherished and felt special having their father
figures present with them.
Events like Book Week and the Father’s Day Breakfast
really highlight for me what a wonderful community we
have at Our Lady of Hope and I feel privileged to be
able to work in such a welcoming community.
Thank you to our Parents & Friends Group
After the breakfast many of our dads stayed for our
whole school mass, which was a wonderful celebration
and focussed on the love, care, joy and wisdom that
dad’s, stepdads, granddads, uncles and significant
males bring into the lives of children. The children
really enjoyed sitting next to their dads/special guests
and it was heart-warming to see many of the children
smiling at, hugging, holding hands, or sitting on the lap
of their invited guest. The close connection that
existed between the children and their dads/special
guests was clearly evident which added to joyous
celebration.
I would also like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all of our
wonderful staff who made the event possible. Catering
for 300 people takes a great deal of organisation and
team work. There were a number of staff who worked
tirelessly behind the scenes in order to ensure
everything for the day was organised. We also had a
number of staff arrive at 6.30 am on Friday morning in
order to assist with cooking the breakfast. Without the
support of all of our staff working together, this event
would not have been such a success. I would also like
to thank and acknowledge Romeo’s Foodland
Fairview Park for supporting our Father’s Day
Breakfast.
I would like to thank all of the dads/significant males
and other guests who attended the Father’s Day
Breakfast and Mass. The community atmosphere was
wonderful. Based on the success of the day and the
joy on the children’s faces, I can see the Father’s Day
Breakfast becoming an annual tradition at Our Lady of
Hope.
Book Week
On Friday the 26th of August we had our annual Book
Week Dress Up Day and our Grandparents/VIP
I would like to say a big thank you to our committed
and growing group of the Parents and Friends
Committee (P&F) who assisted with the morning tea
for the Grandparents/VIP Day and also coordinated
and ran the Father’s Day Stall last week. The P&F is
made up of a relatively small but very dedicated group
of hard working parents.
These parents do a
wonderful job in supporting community events and we
are very fortunate to have them supporting the school
in the way that they do. Events like the Book Week
morning tea as well as the Father’s Day Stall wouldn’t
happen if it wasn’t for the work of this group of parents.
The work that the P&F do benefits the whole school
community. It is great to see how excited the children
get when buying a small gift for their dads at the
Father’s Day Stall. The P&F are a very social group of
parents who would welcome any new members. The
P&F Committee at OLOH is a very informal committee
and parents can volunteer to assist as little or as much
as they would like and are able to. Being part of the
P&F Committee is a great way to meet parents around
the school and get involved in the community. If you
are interested in supporting the P&F, even if it is just
for occasional events, please let me know, as I would
be happy to personally introduce you to our Parents
and Friends Committee and I am sure that they would
love to hear from you.

Our Lady of Hope Feast Day. We will celebrate this
day with a Whole School Mass in the morning. After
the Mass we will transport all of the children to
Thorndon Park for a whole school picnic, which
parents are also invited and encouraged to attend.

is always a great community event.
Show Day
Just a reminder that this Friday
9th September is our school closure day
for the Royal Adelaide Show. There will be
no staff at school on this day.
Community Meeting about Year 7
being offered at Gleeson
On Tuesday night we had the first of our 2 community
meetings regarding the Gleeson College offering Year
7 in 2018 and what this might mean for the families at
OLOH, St David’s and St Francis Xavier. This meeting
was held at SFX and was well attended. At the
meeting parents had the opportunity to ask all 4
Principals and representatives from the Catholic
Education Office questions. The next meeting will be
held next Wednesday 14th September at St David’s
School at Tea Tree Gully. Please feel welcome to
come along if you are interested.
Enjoy the beginning of the nice spring weather.
God bless,
Ashley Keane

Our Lady of Hope Day
This Thursday 8th September is the birthday of Mary, the mother of Jesus, set
down by the Church. As a school community, we celebrate this event in
acknowledgment of Mary as our patron. This celebration will take place on
Friday 16th September.
I invite all families to attend our Whole School Mass on this day at 9.05 am in
the Parish Centre.
Please note Mass will be starting earlier this year to allow extra time for the students to get on
the buses without delay. After the mass, you are also invited to join the children and staff for a
picnic at Thornton Park (off Gorge Road, Paradise).
If you are attending our picnic at Thorndon Park and you are able to assist with the cooking of
the sausages, please ring the Front Office to let them know of your help. The P&F Committee
will appreciate your support!!
It promises to be a memorable and fun filled day and we would love to see you all there!
Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa has recently been declared a Saint of the Catholic Church by
the Pope Francis, 19 years after her death. She was recognised globally for
her work with the poor in the slums of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) in India.
She is an example to all of us of her love and compassion to the poor which
has inspired many. May we also try to be compassionate and let our light
shine to others.

Cans For Kids Project July/August 2016
The Cans For Kids Project has been operating for several years now. Students collect, clean and sell
recyclables to raise money to help children in impoverished areas of Indonesia. So far CFKP has donated
goods to a Catholic orphanage, started a free range pig farm, started a goat micro finance project, sponsored
5 children and now CFKP supports all 27 children in the Adi Bhuana Foundation. Last year the Honourable
Minister for Education awarded the CFKP Project the Children’s Week Award for its humanitarian service to
others.
Ariati is one of those children and was promised a pair of goats to help her family start a small goat breeding
business. Ariati has shown herself to be an intelligent, well-motivated student at school so she was very
deserving of this opportunity when the benefits to introducing Spencer and Patrick, the black and brown
goats, respectively named after little Patrick Coghill and the Spencer family who have been regular supporters
of CFKP. Their babies\kids will be named after Sean Howes, Thomas Brine and Natasha Hoang, all who have
also been extra supportive.
Each year the money raised from recycling fluctuates and sometimes it is not enough to sponsor children with
a fixed amount. So instead of sponsoring just 5 children with larger amounts of money, it was decided to
support all 27 children, and give them each a smaller parcel of goodies to help their families.
There was no shortage of helpers at Hardy’s supermarket in Amlapura. Wayan, the driver and Hendra the
shop assistant were very keen to help, including security personnel. The bags included rice, coffee, long life
milk, sugar, condensed milk, biscuits, toothbrushes, tooth paste, a toy car, textas, crayons, pencils, pens,
erasers, sharpeners, art/drawing books.
All 30 bags of goodies (3 extras) were packed with the help of Ayu from Bali Sweet Warung, ready to deliver to
children in the Karangasam area.
Tika and friends the Adi Bhuana Foundation provided a vehicle to transport the supplies in what became a fun
delivery day to many grateful children and their families. Distance and time constraints precluded visits to all
families, so those parcels would be delivered another day. The experience of meeting families and seeing
first-hand how humbly they live is truly an eye opener, and an experience all students would benefit from.
CFKP is sometimes a tiresome, messy, smelly community service but it makes a difference to others in need.
