More than 20 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a Presbyterian youth group seminary intern in Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina: “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, Help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat.” That prayer was the beginning of a project begun by youth of collecting cans of soup and financial donations for food for the needy during the Super Bowl season. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend into the nation’s largest celebration of giving. Our Mission Committee, in partnership with our Preschool and Kindergarten, is asking that you contribute cans of soup during the next four weeks, beginning with January 13 through February 3, 2013, (Super Bowl Sunday) to participate in this project. We are asking that your weekly Little Red Wagon food donations during those four Sundays be cans of soup. Additionally, there will be a container for soup can collection located in the Narthex. Our goal is to collect 500 cans of soup by February 3rd to be donated to Family Assistance Ministries (FAM) and distributed to the homeless and needy in our community. We hope to build a tower of soup cans to illustrate our compassion for those less fortunate in our midst. If you would prefer to donate financially, please make a check payable to Community Presbyterian Church with Souper Bowl Sunday in the memo line. Please help us build our tower of soup cans!
