WAS THE U.S. FOUNDED AS A CHRISTIAN NATION? A CONVERSATION WITH HISTORIAN JOHN FEA Politicians often say they want to “reclaim” or “restore” America’s Christian origins. But was the U.S. really founded as a Christian nation? If it was, can the U.S. be understood as a Christian nation today given its diversity? Historian John Fea will help us take a careful look at the history of Christian-nation debates and help us to see past the emotional rhetoric of today to the recorded facts of our past. The third forum in Arch Street's American Myths Symposia, which facilitate thoughtful reflection on the content and meaning of the stories that shape national identity and help Americans express their values, fears, and aspirations. John Fea (Ph.D, Stony Brook University, 1999) is Professor of American History and Chair of the History Department at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania. John is the author of numerous books including The Bible Cause: A History of the American Bible Society and Was America Founded as a Christian Nation: A Historical Introduction.
