Topic 7: Import of macromolecules into mitochondria. Many proteins and RNAs are imported
into mitochondria, and most are targeted to specific destinations within the mitochondria
(either matrix, inner membrane, inter-membrane space, or outer membrane). Example
questions include:
 How do the macromolecule transport complexes work, together and separately, to
import the correct macromolecules? What roles do chaperones play in the process?
 What features characterize macromolecules to be imported into mitochondria? Are
these characteristics retained after the macromolecules reach their destinations?
 How are the macromolecule transport complexes in mitochondria similar to, and
different from, macromolecule transport complexes in bacterial plasma membranes?
