Topic 7: Import of macromolecules into mitochondria. Many proteins and RNAs are imported into mitochondria, and most are targeted to specific destinations within the mitochondria (either matrix, inner membrane, inter-membrane space, or outer membrane). Example questions include: How do the macromolecule transport complexes work, together and separately, to import the correct macromolecules? What roles do chaperones play in the process? What features characterize macromolecules to be imported into mitochondria? Are these characteristics retained after the macromolecules reach their destinations? How are the macromolecule transport complexes in mitochondria similar to, and different from, macromolecule transport complexes in bacterial plasma membranes?
