What Surprises You?
Description
In this activity, the teacher will read the book aloud and will ask students to identify things that surprise them.
Directions
1. Read The Surprise Party to the children.
2.
Discuss how Rip Squeak and his friends surprised his parents in the book.
3.
Ask the children what are the best ways to surprise someone and what surprises them.
Activity #2
Plan a Surprise Party
Description
In this activity, the teacher will read the book aloud. The students will help create a surprise party of their own.
Materials Needed
• The Surprise Party Book
• Colored Paper
• Stickers
• Crayons or Markers
• Balloons
• Streamers
Directions
1. Read The Surprise Party to the children.
2.
Ask the children if they’ve ever surprised anyone.
3.
Ask the children who would be fun to surprise with a party.
4.
Plan the party…include decorations and invitations, and make the recipe in this activity guide.

Plan a Surprise Party
Make the Invitations
• First make a list of who is invited.
• Talk about what you will be doing at the party.
• Use the colored paper and stickers to design your invitation.
• Write when and where the party is being held and why you are having the party. Don’t forget to say that it is a
SURPRISE—so do not tell the guest of honor.
Decorations
• Make notes with special messages from each of the children.
• Blow up balloons and hang streamers.
• Serve the Surprise Cereal Treats.

Surprise Cereal Treats Recipe
INGREDIENTS
• 3 T. butter
• 4 cups mini marshmallows
• 6 cups rice cereal
• Favorite candy chopped into small pieces
• Chocolate sauce and sprinkles (optional)
• 8 x 10 buttered pan
DIRECTIONS
1. In a microwave–safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2
minutes until smooth.
2.
Add cereal. Stir until well coated.
3.
Take half of mixture and press into buttered 8 x 10 pan.
4.
Layer your favorite candy pieces evenly on top of cereal.
5.
Take remaining cereal mixture and press on top of candy layer.
6.
Cool for 15 minutes. Cut into squares and serve.
Just for fun try new shapes…
Egg Shape:
Using buttered hands form each portion into 2–1/2 x 1–1/2 inch egg shape, OR coat insides of plastic snap–
apart plastic eggs with cooking spray. Press cereal mixture into eggs. Dip bottom of egg in chocolate sauce
and sprinkles for a special treat.
Other shapes:
Rather than placing in pan, flatten cereal mixture and cut shapes with cookie cutters.
