TULPEHOCKEN TIMES A FAREWELL…DR. ALBERT ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT “Average leaders raise the bar on themselves; good leaders raise the bar for others; great leaders inspire others to raise their own bar.” Orrin Woodward The Tulpehocken Area School District will soon be saying farewell to its leader and Superintendent, Edward J. Albert, Ed.D. Dr. Albert has been the Superintendent of the District since January 2009. He announced that he would be retiring as of June 30, 2015 after a 38year career dedicated to serving students in education. Dr. Albert can be proud of many accomplishments that have taken place during his tenure at Tulpehocken. He created a culture that maintained consistent leadership within the administrative team that provided much needed stability for students and staff. He had the vision and management skills necessary to make the athletic facility become a reality. As a result, the Tulpehocken community will enjoy a beautiful track and soccer field for many years in the future. During difficult economic times and decreased funding for education, Dr. Albert made the necessary changes to maintain a budget that required no tax increase for five out of the seven years. He created the Tulpehocken Education Foundation, which provides additional financial support and grants for special projects in the schools. He has been instrumental in raising money for this Foundation and began an annual golf outing to support the Foundation. As a result, more than $75,000 has been provided to the District in support of our programs. During his career, Dr. Albert touched the lives of thousands of students in other districts as well. He served as the Assistant Superintendent in the Eastern Lebanon County and Manheim Central School Districts. He was a principal in Manheim Central, Lebanon, and Red Lion School Districts and served at the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit in staff development and instructional services. Dr. Albert has been an advocate for education and students by being an active member in several organizations including PA School Boards Association and PA Association of Rural and Small Schools where currently, he serves as the Secretary. He has had the opportunity to represent Tulpehocken in Harrisburg and in Washington, D.C. while presenting to legislators about various issues in education. The Tulpehocken Area School District is a better place because of the commitment and leadership of Dr. Albert. He dedicated countless hours to the District and helped to make Tulpehocken what it is today. We wish him a happy and healthy retirement. Thank you, Dr. Albert, for all that you have done for us at the Tulpehocken Area School District. We look forward to seeing you in a packed house! SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER Dear Parent, The 2014/2015 school year is about to end. As much as I mentioned in my February newsletter about having the same administrative team for five years; things change quickly. We are in the process of hiring a new High School Principal. Mr. Jones retired and Mr. Bottiglieri accepted a position at the BCIU. The JSHS administrative team will have a new face in the fall of 2015. I am proud to announce that we have held the line and there will not be a tax increase this year. This represents five out of seven budgets without a tax increase. I have stated before that we need to be careful about the continuation of no tax increases; as this practice can cause problems in future years. We have been fortunate to not lose any programs, etc.; however, this may not always be the case in the future. I would be remiss if I did not point this out to you. We have had many successes this year in academics, fine arts, and athletics. Our technology program is growing and the students have more access to technology than ever. Our iPad initiative has proven to be successful. We continue to pursue what is best for our students. In closing, I would also like to announce my retirement effective June 30, 2015. It has been a pleasure to serve you for the past six years. As a team we have accomplished so much. Your support, and the friendships I have developed will always be near and dear to me. Thank you for the memories. I leave you with this quote. “Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another. “ John C. Maxwell Sincerely, Edward Albert, Ed.D. ALEK BROWN WINS BETHEL ELEMENTARY GEOGRAPHIC BEE Moves One Step Closer to $50,000 College Scholarship Congratulations to Alek Brown - 6th grader at Bethel Elementary for winning the school competition of the National Geographic Bee and who also had a chance to win a $50,000 college scholarship! It has been a very exciting time here at Bethel Elementary as we enter the second half of the 3rd quarter! Our students are working hard and learning new things every day. Recently the first grade students held their Chinese New Year celebration and treated us all to a parade around the school. Our students have continued to use iPads to enhance their learning experiences. The students are doing things they have never been able to do before thanks to the accessibility of technology to students in our building and district. We are also excited to announce that at the end of March a storyteller named Tom McCabe visited both Bethel and PennBernville for an entire week. He told the students some amazing stories and did writing workshops for every elementary classroom in the entire district! Tom also presented an evening performance for parents and students from both buildings on Thursday, March 26, 2015. We would like to extend a special thank you to our neighbors at Dollar General for providing the funding for Tom McCabe’s program. They have helped our school district continue to make a positive impact on the lives of the children of Tulpehocken! BCTC STUDENTS OF THE QUARTER Each quarter, BCTC instructors select a student from their program whose attitude, skills, and knowledge gained during that particular quarter is above and beyond the standard. The student shows initiative and integrity in performing their tasks and is, overall, the best student for that quarter. The students receive a certificate of recognition and are honored as a group at a breakfast reception for the morning students, and the afternoon students are honored at a luncheon reception. The students are also photographed and their portrait is displayed prominently throughout the school. Students shopped for books during their scheduled library times. Two family nights were held for parents to view the fair and buy any additional books for their children. A new feature to this year’s fair was a program entitled, “All For Books.” Students were encouraged to bring in loose change or a dollar. At the end of the fair, the money collected was donated to two local organizations to purchase books. The goal of this program is to help get more kids reading and to give children greater access to books. The PTO chose to give the “All For Books” donations to the Penn-Bernville Elementary School Library and the Bernville Area Community Library. The librarians each selected books that they thought were interesting and educational for children. Please ask about these new books when visiting the libraries. The students got to see the Gettysburg visitor’s center that was completed in the spring of 2008. At the visitor’s center, our students were able to see a short movie narrated by famous Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman about the importance of the Battle of Gettysburg. During our tour of the Gettysburg museum the students were able to view the restored cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg. Students said standing there seeing the cyclorama was like standing on the battlefield during the battle. The students then set out to the battlefield where they were given a tour of the historic battlefield by a licensed tour guide. The day was topped off with a late lunch at the historic 1776 Springhouse Tavern in downtown Gettysburg. The students would like to thank the school board and administration for allowing them to go on this educational field trip. All in all, it was a great experience for our students who were able to witness Pennsylvania’s history 152 years later. th BATTLE OF THE BULGE VETS VISIT TULPEHOCKEN January 25, 2015 was the 70th Anniversary of the Allied victory at the Battle of the Bulge. On the 28th of January, Tulpehocken Junior-Senior High School held a 70th anniversary commemoration ceremony in the high school auditorium. The auditorium was taken back to 1945 with the stories, the music, and the uniforms of the men who fought in World War II. The students were able to learn about this tide turning battle, as well as, interact and ask questions with three Battle of the Bulge veterans. The history books came alive for the Tulpehocken students at this assembly. The men shared their war stories and experiences during both a morning junior high assembly and then an afternoon senior high assembly. The students experienced a formal military ceremony which included the presentation of the colors, the National Anthem, a brief history of the Battle of the Bulge, the singing of God Bless America and the retiring of the colors. The staff and students would like to thank Sergeant Major Warren Parks, the World War II veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, the World War II Federation, the Civil Air Patrol Squadron 203, the Tulpehocken High School Band and Show Choir for all their help in making this event a memorable one for our students and staff. Congratulations to the cast, stage crew, and music pit, for two phenomenal performances. Your dedication to the craft and sacrifice of your time were quite apparent, we are so proud of you! A huge thank you goes to those who prepared the costumes, created the set, lighting, and our custodial crew, without you there wouldn’t be a musical to see. I am again deeply grateful for all of our volunteers , without all of you, none of our groups i.e. marching band, show choir, musical, would be so successful in doing what they need to do. Our Applebee’s breakfast fundraiser, held March 28, 2015, was profitable as well! The students had a great time serving and did a great job! Thank you to Rich Koenig for chairing ALL of our Applebee’s fund raisers, and the work you do with our Marching Band, you will be missed by all! Title I funding is provided to individual school buildings to provide supplemental core academic instruction, support, and parental involvement. The funding is awarded to schools based on the number of students in the building who qualify for free and reduced lunch. In 2014-2015, both Bethel Elementary and the Tulpehocken Junior-Senior High School qualify to apply for this funding. Bethel Elementary plans to continue to use the funding to support the Response to Instruction and Intervention program by providing staff, resources, and materials to enhance the reading and math programs in the building. Bethel will continue to operate as a Schoolwide Title I Building meaning that the funds can be allocated to support all students in math and reading. The Tulpehocken Junior-Senior High School plans to use the federal funding to support students in the junior high and high school with targeted research-based reading interventions. The secondary building will operate as a Targeted Title I Building meaning that students will be evaluated and placed into the specific reading interventions based on multiple measures of performance. The success of all of our students is our highest priority. Title I funding helps us to provide supplemental instruction and support for our students who are in need of additional support to be successful. OKLAHOMA! 30TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein made history when they wrote Oklahoma!, and Tulpehocken High School followed in the tradition by performing Oklahoma! as the first musical to grace the stage here in this district. In celebration of thirty years of presenting musicals here at Tulpehocken, it was only fitting to celebrate this wonderful legacy by presenting Oklahoma! this year. On opening night of the 2015 production, we had the privilege of hosting an alumni reception. Several of the original 1985 staff, cast, crew, and pit came to share refreshments, stories, and memories. Included in that group, was the original director, Richard E. Frantz; music director, Theodore Weaver; and director of choreography and costuming, Beverly Blatt. The 2015 students were thrilled to meet these Tulpehocken legends and share the evening together. It was a wonderful experience! TROJAN BASEBALL OUTLOOK The 2015 Trojan Baseball team will be led by seniors Matt Martin, Matt Kerber, and Grant Baver along with junior shortstop Kevin Berry. The Trojans were hit hard by graduation as six starting seniors have moved on including allcounty pitcher and Kutztown University recruit Eric Hartranft. Last year’s squad finished second in Berks III and lost a heartbreaker to Wilson in the first round of county playoffs. This year’s squad will feature senior pitcher Matt Martin as other starting pitchers-sophomore Kyle Snyder, junior Ben Wanner, and freshman Jake Carles. Juniors Devin Emerich and Kevin Berry will anchor the bullpen. The offense will be led by Martin, Berry and 3-year starter first baseman Matt Kerber along with sophomore second baseman Vance Gradwell and fellow sophomore DH Matt Eshbach. Senior outfielders Abe Rivera and Tom Ulrich along with junior Josh Kiebach will add to the attack. Senior Grant Baver will handle the catching duties. After a cold and wet March the Trojans hope to use their speed, versatile offense, and pitching depth to contend in Division III with favorite Wyomissing and defending division champion Oley. After taking a year to assess things and get their feet wet, Coach Jess Slish and Coach Stephanie Kiecko are working together to build a cohesive program that will allow the focus to be on building from the younger ages (youth and junior high) so that cheerleaders come to the high school level with more experience that they can build on. It will also put a higher focus on the fundamentals of cheerleading – strong stunts and sharp skills. Both the high school team and the junior high team need more cheerleaders. The more cheerleaders you have, the cooler stunts you can do. We’re willing to work with and teach anyone that has potential and are dedicated to being on the team. A good attitude and being willing to learn is the most important thing. We need strong girls and guys to help throw our fliers in the air. We need small, flexible girls to be put in the air for stunts. We need people who can do gymnastics (or want to learn). Why should I consider being a cheerleader? Cheerleading teaches you about life: responsibility, dedication, teamwork, and persevering through difficult situations. While cheerleading, you make lifelong bonds with not only your fellow teammates, but with the teams you cheer for and cheerleaders for teams that you cheer against. Like other sports, cheerleaders compete! Instead of competing in several games throughout a season, we get one two minute and thirty second performance to show everything we have - our dance ability, cheer ability, stunting ability, tumbling ability and most importantly: our spirit. Tulpehocken has competed in the BCIAA County Cheerleading Championship for all 3 years that it has been held, and has won our division every year. In cheerleading you gain strength, speed, and agility through our conditioning program. These things are a necessity because of the stunts that we do on a regular basis. As some of you probably saw this past year, we were able to have our male cheerleaders put up our female cheerleaders by themselves – which is college-level stunting that most high school teams cannot do. With practice, we can even get strong girls to be able to do that - which is even more impressive. Who can be stronger - Tulpy guys or Tulpy girls? Come join the team and let’s find out! For exceptional cheerleaders, there are many scholarship opportunities. Every year, the Berks County Cheerleading Coaches Association gives 2 scholarships to seniors from participating member schools (of which Tulpehocken is one). College scholarships are also offered for cheerleaders that are interested in attending big cheerleading schools - especially male cheerleaders and fliers that can tumble. Even schools that do not offer cheerleading scholarships will have cheer teams, so you can continue to cheer in college. There are also options for jobs after high school. NCA (National Cheerleaders Association) and UCA (Universal Cheerleaders Association) are two national organizations for cheerleading. Every summer they hold summer camps for high school cheerleaders and younger. Seniors in high school can send in a tryout video to be on NCA or UCA staff. If a cheerleader is selected, they are paid to staff camps in the summer, as well as help run competitions and mini-camps throughout the rest of year. Former cheerleaders have also joined NFL cheerleading squads, NBA dance teams, and local dance teams like the Fightin Phils Dance Team. For more information contact Coach Slish at [email protected].
