Improving Patient Care: Enhancing Quality and Experience
17th November 2015, The Place ApartHotel, Manchester
Are you involved with patient care?
Does a patient’s experience of care effect your role?
Would you like to earn 8 CPD credits?

being met to the highest possible standards. The conference features a highly informative agenda featuring

Qualitative research with GPs to explore their views
of joining and leaving the profession
As part of the GP workforce 10 point plan, a
partnership between NHS England, Health Education
England, the BMA GP Committee (GPC) and the Royal
College of GPs to increase workforce numbers and
reduce GP workload burden, Ipsos MORI is conducting
some independent qualitative research with GPs to
explore their views of joining and leaving the
profession. They are especially interested to hear from
GPs who identify with the following characteristics:
· with a health condition which, at times, makes them
question how easy it is for them to continue working
as a GP;
· currently care for another adult or think they might
need to care for another adult in the future, which
may challenge their ability to stay in the profession;
· returned to practice in England following a period of
not working as a GP or as a GP in England; or
· that trained in England but are now working as a GP
outside the UK.
If you would like to know more about taking part in
the research, and to find out if you are eligible, please
contact Ipsos MORI via [email protected]
There’s nothing general about general practice
Thursday 24 September marked
the start of our GP recruitment
campaign - 'There’s nothing
general about general practice'
which aims to increase the
number of doctors choosing to
pursue a career as a GP. The
campaign is led by HEE in
partnership with the Royal College of General
Practitioners, the British Medical Association and NHS
England and is part of a wider package of measures
outlined in the 10 point action plan ‘Building the
Workforce – the New Deal for General Practice’,
published in January 2015. The campaign includes
online videos, posters and other marketing materials
which are being used at recruitment events around the
country. A team of qualified GPs has been recruited as
ambassadors to spread the word about general
practice, talk about their experiences and provide firsthand advice and experience to those applying this
year. We will be using the #nothinggeneral if you’re on
social media, please help us by spreading the word
about the campaign and follow us on:

like to be involved or have any questions.
HEWM driving forward the GP Recruitment campaign
A new e-learning module for GPs returning to General
Practice from abroad or after a career break has been
written by the Health Education West Midlands team,
in conjunction with Keele University to form part of the
national GP Induction and Refresher scheme. It is now
live on e-LfH. HEWM is working closely with Keele
University for GPs returning to practice and the
university provides a 6 month return to practice course
for those on the scheme. Meanwhile the next film as
part of the GP recruitment campaign will be launched
today, concentrating on the theme of mental health.

The Shape of Caring Review update
The latest phase of engagement around the
recommendations of the Shape of Caring review has
come to a close. Nearly 1,000 people took part in the
conversations with almost 5,000 tweets generated
under the hashtag #shapeofcaring, meaning we
‘reached’ just over a million people. Thank you to
everyone who participated – Director of Nursing, Lisa
Bayliss Pratt’s team have been listening, collating,
analysing and learning from the feedback received and
the next step is for HEE to pull together a formal
response – turning the vision into reality. Watch out
for a highlights video coming soon which will explore
some of the key themes coming out of the
engagement phase.
Have your say on the future of nurse caring
A new nursing education and career framework has
been launched which for the first time sets out for the
profession, commissioners and education providers
and the specialist knowledge and skills needed to
deliver and advance careers in district nursing and
general practice nursing. It sets out the expectations
for each level in both skills and educational
requirements which will assist with workforce
planning and educational commissioning. It will enable
practitioners to plan and develop careers and will
assist employers, nurses and other organisations in
identifying the skills and education required to provide
high-quality care. Look at the framework for yourself

Five Year Forward View - One year on
The NHS’s radical strategy aimed at delivering sustainable and high quality services to patients,
the Five Year Forward View, is one year old. As an active partner in delivering the goals of the
Forward View, we were keen to demonstrate the role that we play in delivering change.
An update was posted to the HEE website, spotlighting our work in providing education and
skills services to the many Vanguards, set up to deliver new care models across England. In
addition, we highlighted national programmes that underpin the strategic aims of the plan such
as GP and nurse recruitment, Shape of Caring and transforming services for people with
Learning Disabilities.
All partners were active across digital channels and we joined the communications drive with
regular social media posts visible to our stakeholders across the week. To join the conversation
on Twitter, search for and use #FutureNHS.

Triumvirate Leadership
Peer networking event – Thursday 5th November
Triumvirate leadership is a collaborative leadership programme uniting a Practice
Manager, Practice Nurse and GP within 24 practices across the region to develop and
begin to implement a systems wide improvement project. The sessions are developed
and delivered by Ararna Limited and commissioned by Health Education West Midlands.
A Triumvirate structure provides a variety of viewpoints, differing perspectives and
combined expertise which can help to reassure patients and staff that there is a senior
member of the practice that is understanding, supportive and shares their concerns. A
peer networking event is taking place on Thursday 5th November 2015, 10.00-15.00 at
the Edgbaston Stadium and will provide a great opportunity to witness how Triumvirate
leadership has made a real difference to the participants and resulted in tangible change
within their practices. The event will allow attendees to network with others within the
healthcare environment and discuss this innovative solution to leadership within primary
care. Tickets available from EventBrite - Password: tri0511. If you require further
information, please contact Ruark Jon-Stevens (Ararna) at [email protected].
