President Moi expressed concern
yesterday that cus1ns, police
and the provincial adnmistration
were doing nothing about smuggling at the coast.
Opening the Mombasa
National Show, President Mci
said that by the time he arrived
in Nairobi, he wanted action
taken and people arrested. "I
have been singing the same
theme for the last six years, and
now I am tired to an extent that I
won't console anyone," said the
President.
He added that Government
officers should wake up and show
their love and service to the
country by ensuring that smuggling was wiped out.
President Moi sa1eaders and

respect themselves if they wanted
to be respected by others and
ensure that wananchi were
protected.
He said smuggling siphoned
tunds meant for national development. "if there is any dishonesty,
things will go wrong, added the
President.
He cited a re ent incident
where second-band clothes were
imported into the country. He
said such illegal importations
could force local textile industries
to lay off workers. "We educate
our children so that they can gain
employment and there is no
meaning when people are laid off
from work," he added.
The President directed the
Cusbans and Excise Department
not to sell goods at its Kilindini
warehouse by private treaty but
through fair auctions.
He said some boats engaged in
smuggling were operating in
Lamu District without lights. "If

such goods is spent for their
welfare and national development," added the President.
He cautioned people who were
moved by greed to the extent that
they engage in smuggling. "You
should be satisfied with the
salary you earn or engage in
lawlul business if you want more
money," added the President.

He called upon, agricultural
officers to transfer agricultural
technology to the rural areas
He said that what was displayed at the show should be seen
in rural areas and gave 12 months
for the directive to be implemented. "When I come to the Coast
next year I will visit every district
to see whether farmers have
adopted modern technology in
farming," President Moi added.

sufficient food in the country.
The President said he was
highly impressed with the
agricultural exhibits at the show.
The Coast and western Kenya,
he said were blessed with rains
and he urged farmers not to sell
all their food but to reserve some
for their own consumption.
President Mci stressed the
need for matching population
growth with food production if
self-sufficiency was to be
attained.
