From The Desk of Fr. Bloom Gree ngs from Peru. You have been in my prayers during this Mission Trip/Pilgrimage especially when we visited the Sanctuary of St. Rose of Lima and offered Mass at the chapel where St. Mar n de Porres is buried. One of the great joys for me was the par cipa on my good friend, Fr. John Madigan in this delega on. Below are pictures of him - with Dominic Parman er taking the Mary Bloom children to the Floa ng Islands and later showing children how to make and pray the rosary. On January 1 the delega on visited the parish of Fr. Valencia - San Miguel Ollaraya. Due to lack of voice, instead of a homily I showed parents how to bless their child - or godchild. You might recall that the readings were about the blessing of Aaron. The mayor of Ollaraya and other town officials took us to the site of the new rectory and pastoral center they are helping Fr. Valencia construct. The whole town looks forward to having their own priest in residence - and they asked if we could give some help. We had a wonderful Vaca on Bible School. The pictures show Mrs. Van Phan-Tran showing children how to play Saints Bingo and rosary making guided by Dominic and Jeremiah. More about them in next week´s report from Peru. We were blessed to have as part of the delega on, Luis Diaz, a young man whose parents are from Peru. Luis was invaluable in the Vaca on Bible School - and in interpre ng for non-Spanish speakers. Along with Vaca on Bible School we had a couple of work projects. Dominic accomplished a complete renova on of the Mary Bloom Center kitchen. He relocated the gas tank to create more space inside the kitchen and installed new shelves and a larger food prepara on table. This will greatly facilitate the work of the cook who prepares a nutri on meal for the children who take part in the tutoring program. The picture shows Dominic, JoAnna and Fr. John during the blessing of the renovated kitchen. We were blessed to have Kari Sweesy and Shari Landreville, members of St. Mary of the Valley, as part of the delega on. Both are health professionals and as you can imagine they had a line-up of parents seeking advice about their children´s health. The pictures show Kari and Shari examining a young child and then with the boy´s happy parents. Meri Price, Sister Barbara, Anita Maceda, Tania Gu errez and Cathy Lenac gave me many good ideas for the Vaca on Bible School. One that worked very well was to use tongue depressors to make individual Na vity Sets. Each child made 9 different figures: Mary, Joseph, the Angel Gabriel, Child Jesus, shepherd, sheep, star and the three Wise Men. The picture shows me blessing their finished work. This year´s Mission Trip include a surprise event a wedding! I will write more about it next week - along with pictures of the beau ful bride and lucky groom! 1 January 15, 2017 Sunday 1/15 9:30 am Mass 11:15 am Spanish Mass Misa en Español Monday 1/16 Tuesday 1/17 Wednesday 1/18 Thursday 1/19 Friday 1/20 OFFICE CLOSED/ OFICINA CERRADA OFFICE OPEN 10:15 AM—4:00 PM OFFICE OPEN 10:00 AM—4:00 PM OFFICE OPEN 10:15 AM—4:00 PM OFFICE CLOSED/ OFICINA CERRADA 9 am Daily Mass: Priests of Prelature of Juli, Sp. There is no preregistration required. We cover the Gospel of the day at a level the children can understand and enjoy. We enrich this with discussion, prayers, songs and plays. We also try to raise awareness of God’s love, the humanity of Jesus, the Seasons of the Church, the understanding of symbols in the Mass and the context of the Bible. Our aim is to make the children’s experience of church meaningful, whilst helping them to grow in the faith of the Catholic Church and develop as full and active members of our Parish Community. During the 9:30 am Mass and before the Liturgy of the Word, Father Bloom invites children up to the sanctuary. The children will receive a blessing from Father and then process to their classroom. After Children’s Liturgy, the children will process to the main vestibule and quietly return to their families. Note: At least two students will be chosen to bring up the gifts. Thank you for your continued prayers and support during this ministry; It is a blessing to watch these little disciples grow in their faith while lifting up Jesus and loving others. If school is cancelled due to weather, First Sacraments class is cancelled. Read Sunday’s Gospel: John 1:29-34 Gospel Summary John the Baptist knew Jesus as his cousin, but it is not clear until we read today’s Gospel that John recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah. John called Jesus the “Lamb of God.” We are familiar with the title for Jesus, “Lamb of God,” because we hear it in our Eucharistic prayers during mass. The Lamb of God comes to take away the sins of the world. And, indeed, Jesus died that we might be free of our sins. The lamb figured in much of Jewish tradition, especially as a symbol of sacrifice, but certainly we recognize the image of “shepherd” as one who leads the flock through darkness and difficult terrain. The message of John’s gospel is for us—the simple sheep—to follow Jesus, the shepherd. Confirmation is 2 years of religious education? Yes, if you are interested in the Sacrament of Confirmation during the Spring of 2018, this 2016/2017 school year you should attend a minimum of 12 United Youth Group Reflection for Families As parents we certainly can understand the image of Jesus as “shepherd.” We are constantly leading the way for our children and serving them with endless love. When they are sick or hurt, we would gladly take their pain and suffering if we could. It is clearly through these feelings that we begin to understand just what Jesus has done for us. As parents, when we show our unending love for our children, they too get an inkling of what Jesus’ love is for them as well. HOMESCHOOLING COOPERATIVE Our homeschool group has a new name! We are now St. Benedicts Catholic Homeschool Cooperative. Please contact coordinator, Susan Howard, at [email protected], or you can search and join our Facebook Group St. Benedicts Catholic Homeschool Co-op of Snohomish and King County. Bringing the Gospel into Your Family Help children understand the roots of “Lamb of God” in our Catholic liturgy. As a family pray together the “Lamb of God” from the mass. 5 January 15, 2016 POPE FRANCIS Prayer Intentions for JANUARY 2017 Christian Unity. That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord’s teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial communion and by collaborating to meet the challenges facing humanity. Three Key Themes This week our nation honors the dream of equal human rights articulated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On January 22, we also mark the anniversary of the most egregious violation of human rights through the Supreme Court decision Roe vs. Wade, which permitted the killing of children in the womb. During these days, Christians also observe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. These three themes intersect powerfully. We pray that Christians will unite in effective service to all who are deprived of their rights, and bring about a Culture of Life, Justice, and Love. How you Help others by donating to SVdP Part One--Your Food Donations--When you donate food to SVdP it is stored in a pantry here at St. Mary of the Valley Catholic Church. Every member of SVdP has access to the pantry to create "food baskets" that they take with them when they visit those in need. We take care when creating our "food baskets" to take a variety of items that we try to match to the situation of those we are visiting. This last week I had an elderly, infirmed couple staying at the Fairgrounds Inn with their two aged dogs. I took soups, instant oatmeal and condensed milk and top ramen along with cans of meat, vegetables and fruits. They needed foods that provided an entire meal yet were simple to prepare with just a microwave. Cathy Lenac also uses the food you donate to help out people who come directly to our church looking for help. Commonly donated food items are cans of vegetables (mostly corn), canned fruit (usually fruit cocktail, peaches or pears) and dry rice, pasta and oatmeal. These things are great because they are basic and make a good starting point for our "food baskets". But, if you really want to add something special when you donate food, soups, canned meat, sauces, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce and cake mixes help liven up the choices we can provide together. No one should ever be without food. Your food donations to SVdP keeps food available to those in need at all times. Attention all youth in middle school and High School We hope to see all of you at our next youth night on January 23rd at 7:00 pm in room 8. Please arrive on time and don't forget your workbooks! Parents, if you still haven't filled out registration forms, please do so, and turn them in to Anita or send them with your child to turn in at our next youth night. Troubled Marriage?
