Madras High School Unit Plan Grades: 10‐12 Subject: Chemistry Semester: 1 Unit of Study: 7: Ionic Compounds & Metals Pacing‐Teaching: Interactive Notes: 10‐12 class periods over chapter 7 Practice work assignments: 10‐12 class periods. Activities: 2 class periods. 2 in‐class activities (Naming Ionic Compounds) Assessments: 3 class periods, 1 lab, 1 quiz, 1 unit test Assessment Pacing: This unit takes about 4 weeks to complete. Essential Questions/Concepts: 1. What’s a chemical bond? 2. How do positive and negative ions form? 3. Relate ion formation to electron formation. 4. Relate a formula unit of a compound to its composition. 5. Write formulas for ionic compounds and oxyanions. 6. Apply naming conventions to ionic compounds and oxyanions. 7. Describe a metallic bond. 8. Relate the electron sea model to the physical properties of the metals. 9. Define alloy and categorize them into two basic types of alloys. Oregon (State) Standards/Next Generation Science Standards (National) HS‐PS 1.1: Use the Periodic Table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outmost energy level. HS‐PS 1.2: Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table and Common Core Writing Standard: CCSS.ELA‐LITERACY.RST.9‐10.3 Follow precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks, attending to special cases or exceptions defined in the text. Vocabulary: Chemical Bond, Anion, Cation, Ionic Bond, Ionic Compound, Crystal Lattice, Unit Cell, Electrolyte, Lattice Energy, Formula Unit, Monatomic Ion, Polyatomic Ion, Oxidation Number, Oxyanion, Electron Sea Model, Delocalized Electrons, Metallic Bond, Alloy. Little effort producing a poor quality product. Does not demonstrate a minimal level of understanding. Diagrams: Inaccurate or incomplete diagrams. Phases of mitosis labels do not show understanding of the cell cycle. Descriptions are incomplete or inaccurate. Questions left blank or incomplete. Little effort producing poor answers. Does not demonstrate a minimal level of understanding. COMPLETION DATE GRADE B (3.0) A (4.0) Discussion Questions: All questions attempted, may lack detail and/or contain errors. Shows a basic knowledge of the standard. Average quality product. Diagrams: Mostly accurate diagrams. Phases of mitosis are correctly labeled and a general description of each stage accompanies each picture. There may be 1‐2 minor errors in descriptions. Discussion Questions: All questions answered, some extra details provided, few errors. Above average final product. Diagrams: Neat and mostly accurate diagrams. Phases of mitosis are correctly labeled and appropriate and a general, correct description of each stage accompanies each picture.
