One Day Argolis with Lunch
Explore with this guided one full day trip from Athens to Argolis the remains of the ancient
city of Mycenae a major centre of Greek civilization from 1600BC to 1100BC and a world
heritage monument.
Depart for one day tour via the coastal National highway for the Corinth canal (short stop).
After the Corinth Canal, you enter the region of Argolis, land of Homer’s Golden Mycenae, a
UNESCO World Heritage site. Dating back to the second century B.C., Mycenae was one of
the major centers of Greek civilization and a military stronghold which dominated much of
southern Greece . Visit the archaeological site, home to the kingdom of mythical
Agamemnon. You will see the Cyclopean Walls, the Lion’s Gate, the Royal Tombs, including
Agamemnon Clytemnestra's, and the Treasury of Atriums, a magnificent 14th-century B.C.
structure. Time will then be taken for a traditional Greek lunch at a nearby restaurant.
After lunch through ARGOS proceed to Nafplion the first capital of modern Greece with its
Venetian fortress of PALAMIDI and the fortified islet of BOURTZI (short stop).
Continue on to Epidaurus and visit the ancient theatre. The UNESCO’S world heritage listed
monument is reputed to be the birthplace of Apollo's son Asclepius, the healer and was the
most celebrated healing center of the classical world. Epidaurus is probably most famous for
its theatre, one of the best preserved classical Greek buildings and still used today due to its
amazing acoustics. The Argolis (Mycenae - Epidaurus) day tour returns to Athens in the late
afternoon.
Half Day Tour to Cape Sounion – Temple of Poseidon
What a sight it must have been when the ancient
Greek seafarers laid their eyes on the majestic
Temple of Poseidon at the very tip of cape Sounio.
There must have been no better reward for sailors
who braved the waves of the Aegean Archipelago
than the view of the orderly marble columns atop
the rugged rocks that form the cape of Sounio.
A sign of approaching safe harbor for sailors who navigated towards Athens and a sign of
farewell for departing ones, the temple of Poseidon has stood silently for thousands of years
as a reminder of respect for mighty Poseidon and his capricious ocean. The temple's
proportions are humble and serene, and yet the structure is elevated in a showmanship
manner through the massive foundation that raises it so it can be easily spotted by sailors
from afar. While most of the ornaments have been removed, the Doric columns impose a
statement of strength, durability and serenity on the entire landscape. The aesthetics of the
temple communicate a message most appropriate and welcome for those who braved the
ocean in small vessels at the mercy of Poseidon's desires.
Cape Sounio has been recognized since prehistoric times as a special place of worship, and
was an important sanctuary during the Greek Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods.
There are two sanctuaries present on the cape: the sanctuary of Poseidon and the sanctuary
of Athena; two gods that were held in high esteem by the ancient Athenians. The ruins as we
see them today are the result of the renovations that took place during the 5th century B.C.,
and replaced a succession of buildings that date back to the archaic period.
The location of cape Sounio at the tip
of Attica rendered it as a location of
strategic military importance, and thus
it was fortified with a mighty wall and
guarded constantly by a garrison which
ensured that the shipping lanes to
Athens remained open. It is also most
likely the place that Aegeus plunged to
his death after he glimpsed the dark sails of Theseus' ship approaching, thus naming the
Aegean Sea after his legend.

AEGINA
The mythological tradition wants Aegina to have taken its name from the nymph Aegina. The
nymph Aegina was daughter of Asopos River and Metopis. The island before the arrival of
nymph named different such as (Herodotus, Pindaros, Stravonas) Inoni, Inona or Inopiia.
Zeus did with Aegina a son Aeacus, who from the wrath of Hera found alone on the island
and therefore begged his father to transform ants in humans. That’s how Aegina came with
its first residents, the Myrmidons.
The temple of Aphaia exists on the top of pine covered hill in the northeast part of Aegina. It
is the greatest monument that survives from the sanctuary, which was dedicated to Aphaia
and seems to have built in a place that there was cult activity since Mycenaean age.
Pausanias mentioned the myth Aphaia and identifies her with the Cretan goddess
Vritomarti-Diktinna. The researchers believe that this goddess was adored in the temple.
The Aphaia considered as the daughter of Zeus and land Crete. There were Diktina adored,
as showed that had similarities with goddess Artemis.
According to legend, the nymph Aphaia persecuted by the Cretan king Minos and in trying to
escape jumped into the sea, where a fisherman rescued her and took her to Aegina. From
there disappeared (Aphaia =Disappeared) in the place where now stands the sanctuary.
When the atmosphere is clear, from the temple we see the Temple of Poseidon at Sounio
and the Acropolis of Athens. The tree temples cobinate one triangle (the holy triangle of
ancient times).
The church of St. Nektarios
