DNV GL Doubles Katy Office
Work will begin immediately on a two-story
building adding 47,500 square feet of office
space to the existing 89,750 square feet. The
construction project will be completed by June
2015. Duke Realty, led locally by David Hudson,
will act as development manager. DNV GL was
the first tenant in this area five years ago, which
is now flourishing with development projects.
Making room for growth
In addition to its organic growth, DNV and
GL Noble Denton have merged to form DNV
GL, which employs 16,000 employees globally,
and 1850 employees in the US. The headquarters
for its North and South America operations are
in Katy, Texas.

The deadline is July 31 for Texas families to enroll
their newborns in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund® and
avoid future increases in tuition and required fees at
Texas public colleges and universities. Newborns are
children younger than 1 at the time of enrollment.
The Texas Tuition Promise Fund — the state’s
prepaid college tuition program — allows participants
to lock in the cost of undergraduate tuition and required
fees at Texas public colleges and universities based on
current prices.
Under the plan, families can prepay tuition and
required fees for a four-year degree, two years of
community college or just a few semesters at Texas
public colleges and universities by purchasing tuition
units.
Enrollment in the program at 2013-14 prices closed
Feb. 28 for children older than 1. The next annual
enrollment period begins Sept. 1, with new contract
prices based on Texas public college costs for the 201415 academic year.
Complete plan information, current prices,
enrollment forms and more are available online at
www.TuitionPromise.org, or call 1-800-445-GRAD

they can save money on certain items priced under $100
during the state’s annual sales tax holiday. This year, the
sales tax holiday is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and
Sunday, Aug. 8 -10.
The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school
supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales
tax, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100
they spend during the weekend.
“Families gearing up for the new school year will not
pay any sales tax for many back-to-school items ranging
from pens to blue jeans,” Combs said. “When the backto-school list is long and the money is short, it can be
difficult for Texas families. We hope this tax break will
help ease that burden.”
Lists of apparel and school supplies that may be
purchased tax free can be found on the Comptroller’s
website at www.TexasTaxHoliday.org.
This year, shoppers will save an estimated $82.7
million in state and local sales taxes during the Sales Tax
Holiday. The tax holiday weekend has been an annual

Making a Difference in the Community
This summer, Faith West Academy,
Camp West, and many local
businesses provided a free of charge
camp to children who normally would
not have the opportunity to spend a
week at summer camp. Through a
program called The Eagle Initiative,
and with the help of “Friends of
Sundown,” over forty-five youngsters
(kindergarten through 7th grade) were
provided scholarships for a week of
summer camp at Camp Eagle Katy.
Camp Eagle Katy is administered
by the Camp West summer program
on the Faith West Academy campus
which includes an adjoining sevenacre lake and park.
“The Faith West mission has
always been to make difference in the
community, and by blessing kids with
a week of summer camp, this is just a
small part in making that difference,”
said Kirk Rightmire, Director of The
Eagle Initiative.

Beginning of Another Year of High School Sports
By Tom Behrens
The Katy ISD high school sports season begins August 4 with volleyball
practices scheduled. The Cinco Ranch Cougars, Katy Tigers and Taylor
Mustangs were playoff teams last year and plan to be in that same position
again in District 19 6A.
Cinco Ranch Cougars:
Finish second in District
“We went a couple rounds into the playoffs, which I felt was pretty good for us,” says Coach Danielle Wells of Cinco
Ranch HS. The Lady Cougars defeated Lamar and Cypress Creek.
The start of regular district play was a downer for Cinco Ranch. The first time around against district 19 5A schools,
Cinco Ranch lost to Memorial in the opener. Memorial went on to win the district title. “The girls were really pumped
up for our game against Memorial, and then to come out losing to them in five games was not fun,” said Wells. “Then
we also lost to Katy, but a high point in our season was coming back in the second meeting and beating both schools.”
According to Wells, the Cougars lost about half of the 2013 team through graduation. Missing will be middle blockers
Stephanie Cloke and Priscilla Ehieze, outside hitter, McKenzi Poehl, libero Hannah Kirk and setter Emily Holub.
The middle blocker position is the most critical need for this year’s team.
Strengths for this season:
“I still have some pretty good hitters,” said Wells. “Senior, right side, Makayla Randle is a pretty strong hitter.
Sophomore middle hitter, Cami May, is really tall, has quick moves. Corin Evans, junior, outside hitter and Nicole
Lennon, sophomore, outside hitter, are both very athletic and bring a lot of power on the outsides.
“I think right now our hitting overall is going to be our best strength as we get ready for opening of camp.”
The Cougars have about six seniors this year, two new to varsity. Wells is looking for leadership from Emilie Floyed,
her projected setter, who has been on varsity since she was a sophomore.
A lot of this year’s team could be described as a youth movement. “Most of my girls who play key roles are young.
Most of the team is kind of young which might be one of our disadvantages. But I know they are excited about the
season coming up. I think once they get comfortable and used to the pace of the game, they will be able to step it up.”
Pre-district games—a time to showcase talents
“Definitely in pre-district competition we are looking for what girls do best, which hitter fits best with this setter…a
time for players to come out and prove themselves,” said Wells . “Pre-district games help us solidify our lineup, so when
we do head into district we are going with the best six on the court.
“You might have two girls who are equal in game skills, but I tell them all the time you can never talk too much on
the court. To me it’s whoever steps up and takes over that role of talking and getting everyone yelling is the one who
is probably going to be on the court.” The Cougars open the season Aug. 12 at home against Cy-Fair.

“We have been participating in strength and conditioning
camps this summer, had great attendance, and the girls were busy
polishing their skills,” says Coach Karen Paxton. “They are very
motivated, very excited about the coming season.” Practice for
2014 season begins Aug. 4.
“We have some kids who are definitely trying to fill some
big shoes and do some good things,” continued Paxton. A big
loss for the Tigers is junior middle back, Madison McConnell.
Her family has moved to Dallas. The Tigers lost four players to
graduation and will return nine.
“We have several players who have had really good experience
that will be coming back.” One of our big outside hitters,
Channing Hankins, is coming back. She is committing to St.
Mary’s University in San Antonio. Also, junior, Melanie Krpec,
will provide great leadership on the floor. Our two captains,
Melanie Krpec and Pup Adams, both seniors, have a solid work
ethic, extremely motivating. The team just rallies behind them;
when they speak, the team follows.”
Preseason expectations:
Paxton, just as Wells and Plemons, will be experimenting with
different lineups for the Tigers. “I want good chemistry on the
floor. I want to see how we respond in pressure situations. I want
a team where everybody on the floor can contribute in some kind
of way. I’m looking for my team to really feel good about our
lineup.
“We have a pretty solid athletic team returning this year, so I’m
looking more for our connections. Emily Shafer is our returning
setter this year. As a sophomore last year she didn’t see much
time.” Amy Miller, who graduated, was Katy’s outstanding setter.
“Emily has big shoes to fill. She will definitely have to make
some decisions in some key moments. We as a coaching staff
will be watching to see which player bonds in one situation, in
comparison to another, looking for what they can do in pressure
situations.”
First game is against Langham Creek HS, August 12 at Katy.
Taylor Mustangs:
A Lot Expected from a Young Team
Coach Brooke Plemons knew at the beginning of the season last year that she had
only a few experienced girls on the court, and it was going to take some time to develop
team chemistry.
“We lost our setter from the year before; we had three girls that were vying for that
starting position and it just took a while to see who was going to fit, work the best with
the hitters we had. Lucky for us, right before we started district play, things really started
to click. One of our setters finally stepped up, Cailin Scherpereel, started playing really
well for us, and got really comfortable on the court. That’s when we started seeing wins
happening more frequently.” Scherpereel will be playing at St. Thomas University.
The Mustangs went 15-24 overall and 7-5 in district.
Hitters Kendall Covington, MacKenzie Wright, typical kill leaders, and Jennifer
Jones graduated. Covington will be playing at the University of Pennsylvania; Wright
will play at St. Mary’s University.
{
Returning starters:
Coach Plemons is expecting a good year from seniors,
Kalyn Burden, outside hitter, and labero, Shelby Wade.
“Burden probably has the most offensive experience of
all the kids.” Her team leadership will be invaluable.”
Wade has been playing on varsity since a freshman.
Right side hitter, Allison Walin and MB Sarah Turney
also return.

both Memorial and Katy in District 19 5A in the second round of district play in 2013. Photo

MB Sarah Turney also returned.
“We had a big team last year,” continued
Plemons in reference to numbers, not height.
“It was kind of in preparation for this year,
to let some of the younger kids who do not
necessarily play all the time at the varsity
level, get to play here and there just to get
used to the speed of the game. We are going
to spend a good bit of time at the beginning
of the season just trying to develop team
chemistry. The kids are figuring each other
out on the court because there are going to be
so many new players.”
Pre-season Strategy – Building
Team Chemistry:
Part of team chemistry is adapting to the
speed of the varsity game, particularly for
middles.
“It’s a tough position to play at any level, but
making that jump from freshman to varsity,
even JV to varsity, is big,” explained Plemons.
“We lost both of our middles, MacKenzie
Wright and Kendall Covington. We are going
to have two young kids coming in to replace
them. One of our new middles, Sarah Turney,
was on varsity last year and trained a lot with
Kendall and MacKenzie, but didn’t get just a
ton of playing time. I’m hoping she will step
up and be ready to play this year.”
The Mustangs scrimmages Aug. 6 at
Cypress Falls and Aug. 8 at Clear Creek. The
season opener is against Dawson, Aug. 12,
at Taylor.

proves something of a strength. Unlike
most political thrillers, there’s not a lot
of yakkity-jabber going on here. The
sentiments are straightforward, and
the themes, basic. Trust. Family. Risk.
Aggression. Apes. This could easily
have been a $170 million hangdog
sequel. Instead, it gives the audience a
modicum of credit, and because it’s an
attempt at real cinema, it arrives like a
glass of cool water. It is a good movie
that in July is destined to set the curve for
blockbusters.

Andy Serkis, the biggest movie star no
one ever sees, is back as Caesar, an ape
made hyperintelligent by experimental
dementia drugs in the previous film. (That
was “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,”
confusingly synonymous with “Dawn of
the Planet of the Apes.”) He and his ape
clan, a decade after the aforementioned
epidemic, are situated nicely among
some Ewok-grade treehouse digs in a
forest north of San Francisco. All seems
peachy till some stray humans stumble
into their territory and, ‘murica, pop a cap
into one of the juvenile apes. The apes,
not amused, ride into town and tell the
humans, from horseback, not to return
to the apes’ zip code, under penalty of
spearing.
But because the humans are running out
of fuel and need to jimmy a hydroelectric
plant near the apes, confrontation
looms. Jason Clarke does a fine job as
a levelheaded peacemaker who brokers
permission to take his crew into the
woods and give the dam plan a chance.
Meanwhile, his fellow colony leader Gary
Oldman has determined that the dam is
so essential, it’s worth going to war over,
if need be. A suspicious, bellicose ape
named Koba (played by Toby Kebbell,
like Serkis, fully obscured in seamless
visual effects) finds the humans prepping
for war, and palace intrigue ensues.
Matt Reeves (“Let Me In,”
“Cloverfield”) directs with an eye for
lighting and a keen sense of pacing.
A presumable weakness of “Dawn”
— that most of its characters, even the
primary ones, communicate only in
simple thoughts, and slowly at that —
The Katy News
The reaction in the past week of “Dawn
of the Planet of the Apes” has been
equal parts encouraging and depressing.
Happily, the movie’s actually pretty
good, and audiences, apparently starved
for anything that doesn’t salute their
intelligence with both middle fingers,
turned out in droves. The damn dirty apes
blew it up at the box office, raking in
more than $100 million worldwide. And
much of that was deserved: In its effects,
plot, tone and action, “Dawn” is a fine
sci-fi flick. The quickest praise to offer
might be, it’s an epic with meaningful
intimate moments, and it convincingly
creates a world where the actions of one
or two characters will determine the fate
of multiple societies. Also, fun apes.
Yet none of these things should be
extraordinary! There was a palpable sense
in the theater where I saw “Dawn” that
the movie had outstripped expectations.
It was a Friday night show, one where
people arrive early for decent seats and
wind up gabbing and dinking around
on their phones. Then, through the 130minute feature, nary a peep. People didn’t
leave in a post-traumatic daze, bludgeoned
into mute submission by superheroes or
Transformers or exploding alien ships.
This was hardly a perfect movie; some
of the time elements just don’t make
sense, and for a crafty band of survivors
who endured an apocalyptic plague that
wiped out 499 of every 500 people on the
planet, the humans tend to make stupid
decisions. Still, as a summer potboiler,
this doesn’t feel like a waste of 10
bucks. Too often the same cannot be
said for its competitors.
