Music Life of the ScholarOfficials in Ming and Qing
Dynasty
Dr Wang Yi
Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Institute of History
16.00-17.00 hrs
There are many attainments about Chinese history studies in politics,
thoughts and literature of the scholar-officials in Ming and Qing
dynasty. However, few scholars pay close attention to the daily lives of
the people whom they are researching. We care about the history
because we care about our situation in present and in future. The
history of politics, economy and thoughts are very important for us
today, and the history of lives has tight connection with our lives today.
The so-called “heritage” has been transmitted from person to person,
from generation to generation, and become our tradition, and goes
deep into our lives and our hearts. This lecture is trying to introduce the
two kinds of musical art, Guqin music and Kunqu opera, which were
the self-entertained and self-educated means in lives of the
scholar-officials of Han nationality in Ming and Qing dynasty, and the
other kind of music, the art of Octagonal Drum, which the Eight
Ensigns of Qing dynasty, the Manchu nobility, brought into the south
of Great Wall, and then became very popular in the north of China. This
lecture is also trying to discuss what important roles those kinds of
musical art played in the lives of the scholar-officials in Ming and Qing
dynasty, and the situation of those old art styles in modern China.
