Class of 1962 Celebrates 50 Years
Submitted by Members from the Class of 1962
With its theme “Memories of Chisholm”, the Class of 1962 celebrated its milestone by
gathering at the All Class Reunion.
The Saturday banquet
at Valentini’s featured a
very successful fundraising raffle for the
Chisholm Community
Foundation. This fundraising effort was in
memory of the deceased classmates of
1962.
“Memories of Chisholm” raffle prizes included the wonderfully
dramatic photo of the
Chisholm High School Pictured L to R: Charlotte Radotich, Marcia Jordan, Dave Pessenda-CCF Chair,
Richard Ilka & Rick Pellika
auditorium taken by
Bill Butkovich, autographed memorabilia from Chisholm’s medal-winning Olympian, John
Shuster, original ceramic pottery donated by the family of Lynette Randy as well as a
plethora of items given by the Southside Memorial Committee, Tom & Jerry’s, Valentini’s
and Moeller Photography.
For those of us who cruised our town during the All Class Reunion, it became obvious the
work done by the Chisholm Community Foundation and all the dedicated volunteers. We
remain, all of us, very proud Chisholmites!
CCF Note: The Chisholm Community Foundation is honored to accept a donation of
$1,691.00 from the Class of 1962 in memory of their deceased classmates. The CCF
would also like to thank the Classes of 1952 & 1957 for their donations of $165 and $100,
respectively. Many thanks go out to all of you for supporting our cause in making Chisholm a better place to live and raise families.

As this is the first letter to the investors of the Chisholm Community Foundation I’ve written, let me introduce myself to those of you who don’t know me.

Greetings Fellow Investors!
After high school, I enlisted for a six-year term with
the United States Marine Corp; four years active, two
years reserve.
Soon after discharge from the military, I tried some
advanced schooling and then went to work in the
taconite industry with a millwright apprenticeship. I
stayed with that occupation until I retired with 34
years of service.
I can say we will attempt to continue the traditions of
the CCF that my predecessors set. I believe in
change—because without updating and maintenance,
even the best of systems wear out—and in our times,
they end up at the dump.
I hope you will advise and communicate with me on
your ideas and thoughts to make the Chisholm Com-

Anchors Away!
Since October of 2000, when the present, redesigned Veterans
Memorial was dedicated, Navy veterans and members of Press
Lloyd 247 have had hopes for a more visible memento for the
Navy branch of the service.
For the past 12 years, the Legion has sent out feelers and finally
they tracked down a 22,500 pound anchor in Texas. There are
10 projectiles, each 16 inches in diameter, 5 feet 4 inches high,
weighing 1,600 pounds. Transportation costs were paid by
L&M Radiator. Hibbing Taconite paid for the crane used to
unload the anchor. The City of Chisholm donated equipment
and an operator for excavation and rebar was donated by L&L
Rentals. Forms and placing of rebar is being done by members
of the Post. Twenty-seven yards of concrete will be donated by
Seppi Brothers of Virginia. Engineering and labor for structural
purposes have been donated by Furin & Shea of Hibbing. The
addition to the present memorial should be completed shortly.
Landscaping east of the M-60 tank is in progress to improve the view of the Memorial from the highway.
Many thanks go out to the companies that have assisted with this project. Also, thank you to the members of
Press Lloyd Post 247 for their fine efforts and to the Minnesota Discovery Center for allowing this monument
to be added to the Veterans Memorial.
CCF Celebrates 25 Years
The Chisholm Community Foundation held its 25th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, August 9, 2012 at
Valentini’s Supper Club. Shawn Anderson was our MC for the evening and welcomed over 100 people to the
event. Judi Scott talked about the CCF and its many accomplishments over the last 25 years. Shawn then reviewed the 2012 first half grant awards, introduced new CCF board member, Barb Johnson, and acknowledged
outgoing board members, Gerrie Scaia and Judi Scott, who has been the CCF chair for the last two years. He
also acknowledged the people who have served on the board over the last 25 years as well as our emeritus
board members, Ron Gornick, Paul Marturano and Veda Ponikvar.
The Ivo Trio was on hand for everyone’s listening enjoyment and Valentini’s created a wonderful atmosphere
to go along with their tasty hors d’oeuvres.
Minnesota Deer Hunters Banquet
The annual banquet of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association was held on October 3, 2012 at the Hibbing
Memorial Building. Approximately 500 people attended. Valentini’s Supper Club, a longtime supporter of
the Chisholm Community Foundation, sponsored the bar at the event and donated proceeds of $2,643 to the
Chisholm Community Foundation. CCF board members were on hand to help bartend. Thank you to Tony
Lautizi, Joe Marturano and Aaron Nelson for donating their time & talent throughout the evening. We’d also
like to thank Coca-Cola Bottling Company for their very generous donation of all the pop, water, Powerade
and the use of the bar, A-1 Refrigeration for their refrigeration trailer and Sunny Hill for the beer bins and
coolers.
A very big thank you goes out to Paul David Marturano for organizing this friendraiser and for his time and
commitment to the CCF. We appreciate your support and all you do!

Investing in Our Children’s Future
By Shannon Zubich
The Chisholm Public School Foundation was able to award several grants in the spring of 2012. With our mission of serving the
children of Chisholm and the surrounding area, we were very happy to see the applications that came in to the CPSF.
The CPSF awarded $690.00 to Title I students. It may come as a surprise to you, but many children do not even have a storybook to
read at home. The goal of this request was to provide books and access to literature at home so children will read more and learn to
love reading. Children in Title I are below their classmates in reading, so this program will allow them to bridge that gap.
With the emphasis on literacy for our students, the Kindergarten teachers put in a grant request for $1,192. This grant amount purchased eight stations with headphones where kindergarten students can read along with the books purchased. Those books include
Listen, Read & Rhyme w/Suess, Dandelion (set of 4) and Gregory’s Shadow (set of 4).
The final grant of $437.00 was awarded for the Bluestreak Pride (emphasis on STREAKS) movement.
S—Safety; T—Trustworthy; R—Respect/Responsible; E—Eager to Learn; A—Achieve Goals; K—Be Kind; S—Standing Strong
& Be Supportive
It is our goal to emphasize these words and to find students actively participating in all of these things. They are awarded with a
ticket and at the end of the week, a ticket is drawn so the recipient can attend with a guest one of our sporting events free of charge.
They are also given a certificate, pencil, eraser pencil grip or wristband.
This grant was awarded so an end of the year party could be held at the Vaughan-Steffensrud playground. Blowups were rented,
face painting was available and BBQ sandwiches and chips were also available. The event was a huge success.
In closing, I would like to ask anyone who is interested to please invest in the Chisholm Public School Foundation. If you cannot
invest, maybe you could give your time and talent. We are always looking for new ways to raise funds.
Richard Olson (Sach), who is employed
with the Chisholm School District, gave
his talent and time for the CPSF. He
built several miniature building sets.
One is of Roels Gymnasium, the second
is the Auditorium Stage and the third is
the original Chisholm Senior High
School. These items were on display in
the tent at the All Class Reunion this
past summer. We would like to sincerely thank Rick for working so diligently on these projects and doing an
absolutely outstanding job recreating
them.

Last year, approximately 80 people attended the event and sampled over
40 different wines. People were able to purchase their favorite wine and
receive it in time for the holidays. Valentini’s added their flair with an
elegant buffet of hors d’oeuvres. Paul & Suzi donated the proceeds from
the event to the CCF ($2,100). CCF Advisory Board Members assisted
in planning and helping with the festival.
Please join us for this very enjoyable evening where you can even get
some Christmas shopping done. To RSVP, call Keyboard Liquor at 218254-7271 or the CCF office at 218-254-1101. Hope to see you there!
